IMMEDIATE RELEASEJune 25, 2008 Contact: Dwayne Hanberry, SCAC Commissioner DEPAUW’S DOOGAN NAMED 2008 SCAC WOMAN OF THE YEAR SUWANEE, Ga. - Recent DePauw University graduate Katherine (Katie) Doogan has been named the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Woman of the Year. Doogan starred both in and out of the swimming pool for DePauw. She
completed her four-year athletic career by being named the SCAC Swimmer of
the Year for the second straight year after leading the 15th-ranked Tigers
with three individual wins at the 2008 conference championship meet. It
was the third time Doogan had been named the SCAC Swimmer of the Year –
she also earned the honor as a freshman in 2005.Overall, Doogan won 10 individual events at the conference championship meet during her career – tied for the second most in league history. She is the SCAC record holder in both the 200 and 400 individual medley and DePauw’s record holder in the 100 and 200 free as well as the 200 and 400 individual medley. A member of the school record holding relays in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays as well as the 200 and 400 medley relays, Doogan earned all-America honors as a part of eight DePauw relay teams. Individually, she was a two-time all-America in both the 200 and 400 individual medley. Doogan was also recently named the 2008 DePauw Senior Female Athlete of the Year. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Doogan boasts a
3.55 grade point average in English writing and is a four-time SCAC
Academic All-Conference honoree. She is a member of Eta Sigma Phi and a
DePauw University Media Fellow and was also part of a pair of National
First-Year Honor Societies – Phi Eta Sigman and Alpha Lambda Delta,
serving as President of the latter.In addition to her success in the pool and her studies in the classroom, Doogan filled her little spare time with various campus and community service activities. She was the executive producer for a TV show, The World is Talking, on D3TV, DePauw Student Television and also served as a deejay and newscaster on WGRE, the campus radio station. Additionally, Doogan was managing editor of A Midwestern Review, a biannual literary magazine and served as a mentor for 14 incoming first-year students as part of the depauw.year1 Mentor Program. Doogan was one of four outstanding nominees considered by the SCAC Woman of the Year Committee. In addition to Doogan, the 2008 Woman of the Year candidates were:
