Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. - Trinity University defeated DePauw University 5-3 in the second game of the 2004 SCAC Baseball Championship Thursday afternoon at Oglethorpe.

With Thursday's win, Trinity (32-7) avenged last year's opening game tournament loss to DePauw.

Trinity will next face Rose-Hulman at 7 p.m. Friday night. Rose-Hulman defeated Southwestern 5-1 in Thursday's late game. DePauw, which dropped to 27-13 on the season, plays Oglethorpe in the tournament's first elimination game Friday morning at 11 a.m.

Trinity took a 3-0 lead before DePauw finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Mike Frost started for Trinity, and pitched 6.1 innings before giving way to Adam Frey. Frost gave up two runs - one earned - on eight hits, and struck out six batters to move to 10-1 this season.  Frey recorded his second save of the year, allowing one run on five hits over the final 2.2 innings, striking out four hitters.

With the win, Frost ties assistant coach Brian Nowell with 26 career wins. The school win record is 28, set by Paul Stanley. Frost's six strikeouts also make him the SCAC strikeout king, giving him 294 strikeouts for his career. Frost passed Southwestern's Forrest Martin (1999-01, 2003) for first place on the list.  He is second in Trinity history, with Stanley the only Tiger over 300 strikeouts (342).

Huston O'Connor led the Tigers with three RBI in the game, finishing 2-3 with his 10th home run of the season - a solo shot to right field in the fifth inning.  Andreas Verrios also finished with two hits in the game, scoring once, and driving in one run.

Jason Armstrong extended his hitting streak to 34 games, finishing 1-3 on Thursday.  Armstrong has had a hit in every game but one this season, and continues to inch towards Trinity's record for hits in a single season.  He needs four more hits to tie the record, set by Kenneth Sharp (1999-02).

DePauw out-hit Trinity 13-10 in the game, and both teams made three errors. John Younger led DePauw with three hits, while Kevin Ehinger, Zach Harris, Greg DeBeer and Chris Newman each added a pair. Ehinger extended his hitting streak to 14 straight. Huston O'Connor and Andreas Verrios each had two of Trinity's 10 hits.

DePauw's Tyson Becker, who entered the game with a 2-0 record against Trinity in the SCAC tournament, suffered the loss and dropped to 4-4. Becker establised two DePauw career records in the game as he broke the school record of 207 strikeouts set by Daniel Mack (1999-02) and the innings pitched mark of 247 held by Jeff Summers (1995-98). Becker struck out a season-high eight in eight innings of work.
