ATLANTA, Ga. - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on two home runs and a complete-game pitching effort from junior Nathan Soyer to earn a 5-1 victory over Southwestern University in the third game of the opening day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday evening at Oglethorpe University.

Seniors Cort Severns launched a solo home run to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead in the third inning, then senior Matt Moore added a two-run blast to give Rose-Hulman a 3-1 edge in the sixth inning. Junior Brad Jones added a two-run single in the seventh frame to provide the final pair of runs.

Soyer scattered eight hits and recorded three strikeouts in a nine-inning complete game effort. The right-hander improved to 7-1 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.40 in the effort.

Senior Adam Windmiller and freshman Matt Salisbury added two hits each to help propel a 10-hit attack.

Matt Odom led Southwestern with three hits, one run and one RBI, while Bryan Jones added a pair of hits. Kurt Watzek scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs in seven innings of work to fall to 6-5 on the season.

Rose-Hulman improved its school record for victories in a season by moving to 32-4 with the victory, and squares off against nationally-ranked Trinity University in second-round action at 6 p.m. on Friday. Also on Friday, Southwestern (24-17) plays Millsaps at 3 p.m.
