Game 1 - Friday, April 23 - 10 a.m.

Box Score

ATLANTA, Ga. - Millsaps College scored four runs in the second inning and made it stand as the Majors took a 5-1 victory over Centre College in the first game of the 2004 SCAC Softball Championship.

The defending SCAC softball champs, Millsaps will play the #1 East seed Rose-Hulman later today at 2:00pm (EDT). The Majors improved to 21-18 while Centre dropped to 16-17.

Centre touched Majors’ starter and winner Tammy Ladner (13-9) for a run in the top of the first on a Marjorie Pilkington RBI single. That was all the Colonels could manage off of Ladner, who went the distance, scattering six hits and striking out four. She had pinpoint control all morning as she did not issue a free pass.

Millsaps got cranked up in the second as they took advantage of a costly Colonel error to post four runs, three of which were unearned. Kati Fleming led off the inning with a single to center and pinch runner Kylie Kurtz was sacrificed to second. After a hit batsman and a fielder’s choice, Millsaps had runners on first and second with two out. Christina Sharp hit a clutch single to right, scoring Naffie Mooney. With the score tied at one, Crystal bender grounded to the pitcher, who threw wild to first, allowing both Sharp and Helen Loring to score. Robin Rockco capped the inning with an RBI single to short.

Millsaps added another unearned run in the fourth to make it 5-1. Centre threatened in the fifth but the rally was killed when Lindy Pritchard was caught in a rundown between third and home as she attempted to score from second on a single by Jessica Chisley.

Ladner retired the last six Centre batters to finish in impressive fashion. Erin Grumley (13-10) was the tough-luck loser for Centre.

Rockco (2-for-3, RBI), Sharp (1-for-3, RBI), and Loring (two runs scored) led Millsaps offensively. Pilkington (1-for-3, RBI) and Lindy Pritchard (2-for-3) paced the Colonels.
