2004 SCAC Softball Championship
Game 10 - Saturday, April 25 - Noon |
Box Score
ATLANTA, Ga. -
Sewanee-University of the South won four consecutive games and claimed its
first-ever conference softball title with a 2-1 victory over Millsaps College
Sunday at the 2004 SCAC Softball Championships held at Georgia State
University in Panthersville.
With the win, Sewanee (19-19) receives the league's automatic berth into the
NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Sunday, May 2, with NCAA Regional
play beginning Friday, May 7.
For the second consecutive season, Millsaps and Sewanee met in the the SCAC
title game, but - unlike last year - Sewanee walked away with the hardware.
Sewanee's Amy Owensby outdueled Millsaps' Tammy Ladner in a game that lived up
to expectations with two of the better pitchers in the league squaring off.
Owensby allowed eight hits and struck out five, and had a shutout until Robin
Rockco hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut Sewanee's lead in
half. But with runners on first and second, Owensby struck out Kati Fleming to
end the threat and secure the title for Sewanee.
Ladner suffered the loss, but allowed just five hits while striking out five.
Sewanee plated a run in the fourth and fifth innings - using a sacrifice fly by Owensby and a run-scoring single Garrett Marquardt to take a 2-0 lead.
And that would be all the support Owensby would need.
The senior right-hander picked up all four wins for Sewanee on the weekend
while compiling a miniscule ERA of 0.75 (3 earned runs in 28.0 innings).
