ATLANTA, Ga. -
Sewanee-University of the South stands as the last undefeated team in the 2004
SCAC Softball Championship after a thrilling 3-2 seventh-inning win against
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Sewanee (18-19) advances to Sunday's conference championship
game for the second consecutive season. Rose-Hulman ends its season at 21-18.
With the score tied at 2, Sewanee's Eliza Herrera opened the bottom of the
seventh by reaching on a fielding error. Garrett Marquardt singled Herrera
over to third, and then Lauren Martin played the role of hero with
game-winning single to left field.
Amy Owensby improved to 15-17 and scattered eight hits and allowed two runs.
Martin finished with two hits and a run scored and Kristin White also had two
hits and a run for Sewanee.
Rose-Hulman's Lauren Clark was the hard-luck loser for the Engineers. She
allowed nine hits and three earned runs (two earned) while striking out four
and walking one.
Sarah Bireley went 3-for-3 for the Engineers, and Amanda Bower had two hits
and two RBI for Rose-Hulman. Nicole Sanders also had two hits.
