Past CAC/SCAC Festival Sites & President Trophy Winners

In the 46-year history of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, there have been few constants. Membership has changed, sports have been added and student-athletes have come and gone. However, one constant that has been with the conference since its formation in 1962 has been the season-ending Spring Sports Festival.

This year, that tradition comes to an end as Centre College and DePauw University play host to the final Festival. Beginning in 2009, each spring sport will feature its own individual championship that will be played in various regions of the conference.

As the SCAC prepares for its 46th and final Festival, the conference office, along with SCAC sports information directors across the league, re-visited with several former student-athletes and coaches to document their recollections and memories of past Festivals. These stories will be featured here and updated daily leading up to the 2008 Festival.

Jerheme Urban, Trinity University
Although the concept of the Spring Sports Festival will end with this year's event at Centre College and DePauw University, the memories of those student-athletes who gathered in late spring every year to compete in the name of school pride will endure.

Among those competitors was Jerheme Urban (2000-2003) of Trinity University and for all who witnessed his historic track and field exploits, the Legend of Urban was no urban legend.

Jeff Gabbert, Southwestern University
The 2002 season was one to remember for the Southwestern University baseball team, beginning with a 23-game winning streak to open the season and sweeping through the SCAC Baseball Tournament at the Spring Sports Festival in Jackson, Miss.

Perhaps the most memorable performance, though, came from Jeff Gabbert (2001-2004) at the Spring Sports Festival when he went 8-for-8 with four home runs, two doubles and two singles.

Ed Rall, Centre College
Ed Rall (1968-1971) announced his presence with authority 20 years before Bull Durham’s Nuke LaLoosh even contemplated the concept.

An 18-year old freshman right fielder for Centre College and batting leadoff in his team’s first game of the 1968 CAC Baseball Tournament, Rall went 5-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the Colonels to a 16-7 victory over Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College).

Amy Owensby, Sewanee-University of the South
A member of the league's 15th anniversary softball team, Amy Owensby (2001-2004) of Sewanee-University of the South is the only pitcher in conference history to post four wins at the same SCAC Tournament.

In 2004, she accomplished this amazing feat with wins over Hendrix, Trinity, Rose-Hullman, and finally with a 2-1 championship win over Millsaps. In the championship, the Majors mounted a comeback after being down 2-0. They scored one in the bottom of the ninth, but Owensby held them off, securing the one-run win over Millsaps. More
