JASON GERINGER OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-0 junior outfielder from
Bloomington, Ind., has been named the SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week. Geringer
had 12 hits in 17 at bats (.706) to lead the Tigers to the SCAC Baseball title
at the 2001 Spring Sports Festival. In DePauw's four tournament games, Geringer
had three doubles, four runs scored and six RBIs and led all hitters in batting
for the weekend. He slugged .882 and had an on-base percentage of .684 to lead
DePauw to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1979.
Other impressive offensive performances from the week:
Sophomore first baseman
Bryan Jones of Southwestern had 12 hits in 27 at-bats (.429) with three
doubles, one home run, eight runs scored and nine runs batted in as the Pirates
went 5-2 at the SCAC tournament. Senior designated hitter Andy Tochterman of
Rose-Hulman batted .667 with one double, four hits, two runs scored and two
RBIs in the Engineers' SCAC Tournament play. Tochterman walked four times to
record an on-base percentage of .800. Senior catcher/third baseman Travis
Munro of Trinity batted .533 (8-for-15) in the SCAC Tournament, leading the
team in hits and average. He also scored four runs and drove in three from the
top of the Trinity lineup, and held an on-base perecentage of .579 for the four
games. Millsaps and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the
award, and Centre, Hendrix, Rhodes and Sewanee did
not play.

JOEY SCHLAFFER OF SOUTHWESTERN, a 6-0 junior pitcher from Midland,
Texas, has been named the SCAC Pitcher-of-the-Week.
Schlaffer was all but unhittable at the SCAC tournament, throwing 14.0 innings without
allowing a single run. He went 2-0 in three appearances, allowing 11 hits
while striking out 12 and walking one as opposing batters hit just .212
against him over the weekend.

First-year pitcher Dave
Edmonds of DePauw pitched a complete-game in the Tigers' 8-4
championship-clinching victory over Southwestern on Sunday. Edmonds, in his only
pitching performance of the weeknd, scattered six hits and allowed four runs,
striking out two and walking three as DePauw earned its first NCAA tournament
appearance since 1979. First-year lefthander Travis Woody of Trinity
appeared in two of the Tigers' four games this week, both in relief, earning the
win in one of them. He totaled 7.2 innings, allowing just one earned run (1.17
ERA). Woody gave up just five hits, striking out 10 hitters in the process. Millsaps,
Oglethorpe and Rose-Hulman did not nominate anyone for the award,
and Centre, Hendrix, Rhodes and Sewanee did not
play.

DePauw; Southwestern Fall in NCAA Baseball Regionals
ORANGE, Calif.
– Southwestern University defeated McMurry (Tex.) 9-3 on Friday to survive the NCAA Division III West Region’s first elimination game, but lost the next day 8-4 to Cal State Hayward – ending the Pirates season at 40-11.
Southwestern dropped to the loser’s bracket after losing 7-5 to host Willamette (Ore.) University in the regional opener.
James Cunningham went eight strong innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out five in picking up the Pirates only win of the tournament against McMurry. Justin Barnett hit .429 (6-for-14) with a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored in the three games and teammate Chad Wiley hit .417 (5-for-12) with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.
MARIETTA, Ohio - In a game that took over 24 hours to complete due to rain delays, DePauw University fell to Allegheny College 8-5 and was eliminated from the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional baseball tournament. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Gators responded with three in the fifth and one in the seventh.
DePauw outhit Allegheny 15-8, but left 11 men on base.
Dan Jones led the Tigers with three hits followed by Steve Spasojevich, Jarrett Hunt, Javair Gillett and Scott Hamer with two each. Mark Minaeo and Kevin Hiles each had two hits for Allegheny. DePauw finished the season with a 26-19 record.
After a three-hour, 10-minute rain delay prior to the start of its first round game, DePauw lost to Ohio Wesleyan 6-2 to drop into the loser’s bracket.

All-SCAC Baseball voting
Millsaps
College, after winning the SCAC Western Division, had two of its players among
the three sharing post-season honors and DePauw University and Oglethorpe
University had one representative each in exclusive 2001 all-Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference voting by the league’s head coaches.
Brandon Page of Millsaps, a junior outfielder from Amarillo, Texas, was selected
as the SCAC Player-of-the-Year. Page hit .404 on the season with six home runs,
12 doubles, three triples and led the league in runs scored (59 in 39 games). He
also stole 23 bases and drove in 35 runs.
Page’s teammate Chat Lenhart, a sophomore
from Houston, Texas, was selected as SCAC Co-Pitcher-of-the-Year. Lenhart
finished the season with eight wins against just two losses and an ERA of 4.24.
His eight wins tied for the conference lead. He appeared in 16 games and threw
87.0 innings.
Sharing Pitcher-of-the-Year honors with Lenhart was Brian Kenna of Oglethorpe, a
senior from Tampa, Fla. Kenna finished the season at 6-4, throwing 79.1 innings
with an ERA of 3.40. He won the only game for the Petrels in the SCAC
tournament, defeating Rose-Hulman 5-3 and finished his career with
eight-consecutive regular season conference wins without a loss.
DePauw head coach Matt Walker, in his first full season as the Tigers’
skipper, led his squad to the top of the SCAC Eastern Division and the
league’s conference tournament title at the Spring Sports Festival. After two
seasons of two-and-out in the conference tournament, the Tigers advanced to the
championship game with victories over Southwestern and Trinity. After losing
Sunday’s opening game to Southwestern 7-1, DePauw rallied to win the SCAC
crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA baseball championships with an 8-4
victory over the Pirates.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
-Southwestern
University dropped from second to 12th and MIllsaps College dropped
one slot from 21st to 22nd in the latest ABCA
Division III National Rankings (April 23). No
other SCAC school received votes.
-Hendrix College set two NCAA records during the March 24 game with Rust
(Miss.) College. In the first inning, the Warriors stole 11 bases - breaking the
all-time DIII single-inning stolen base record of 10 formerly held by Rhodes
College (4/11/94 against LeMoyne-Owen). Hendrix finished the game with 24
total stolen bases, which shattered the old single-game mark of 16, which was
shared by three schools, one of which was Rhodes from the same April 11,
1994 game. Hendrix won the game 16-6 over Rust.
