SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 14th through Sunday, April 20th)

KYLE FELIX OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 205-pound first-year designated hitter from Woodside, Calif., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 14 through Sunday, April 20.

Felix led the Tigers to three wins last week, including a Divisional Playoff series sweep of Oglethorpe over the weekend. He hit .500 (6-for-12) over the past three games, as well as .625 (5-for-8) in the weekend series with Oglethorpe. 

Felix scored seven runs and drove in eight more to lead the Tigers in both categories. He hit two home runs over the weekend to take over the team lead in that category as well. He had three RBI in both games against Oglethorpe, setting new team records for a Divisional Playoff game, and also stole his first base of the season.

For the year, Felix is hitting .341 (46-135) with 32 runs and seven home runs (tied for third in the SCAC). His 44 RBI are second on the team (fifth in the SCAC), and he has started 37 of the team’s 41 games as a first-year player. He holds a .578 slugging percentage (ninth in the SCAC) this season, as well as a .425 on-base percentage.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior first baseman Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes had a big weekend against Millsaps in the SCAC Divisional Tournament, posting a batting average of .615 (8-for-13). In the decisive third game, Vanaman was 4-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch, reaching base safely in all five plate appearances. He also added a triple and a home run and had two RBI's while scoring three of Rhodes' six runs. On the week, Vanaman slugged 1.000 and had an on-base percentage of .666. He also scored six runs. His 237 career hits ranks him sixth on the all-time SCAC list. Senior shortstop Hunter Abrams of Millsaps
moved into second all-time on the Majors' career hits list with 230 after going 7-for-17 (.412) on the week with four runs scored, three RBIs and a home run. The senior shortstop was the spark to the Majors’ offense on Saturday against Rhodes that allowed Millsaps to score its first runs of the game and eventually force a decisive Game 3. Abrams went 4-for-5 to tie a career-high and posted his 19th multi-hit game when he launched a two-run homer over the leftfield wall that made the score 5-2 and then scored the tying run before Millsaps won the game, 6-5. He went 2-for-5 on Sunday to finish the Divisional weekend at 6-for-13 (.462) and move into first on the team in batting average at .360. He now needs just six more hits next weekend to move into a tie with former teammate Jason Hadley and seven to become Millsaps’ career hits leader. Senior rightfielder Kyle Thompson of DePauw went 5-for-7 (.714) in two starts, including a 3-for-3 performance in the Tigers' game-two win. He also had one run scored and one RBI. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Hendrix did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 7th through Sunday, April 13th)

TRAVIS BOGUE OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-5, 205-pound senior left-hander from Madison, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 14 through Sunday, April 20.

Bogue carried the Majors to a pair of wins over Rhodes College in the SCAC Divisional Playoffs this past weekend, throwing in relief in Games 2 and 3 to post a 1-0 record along with his first career save. 

The senior southpaw tossed the final four innings while striking out three and giving up just two hits to earn his career-best eighth win of the year in relief of Aaron Williams on Saturday before entering in the seventh on Sunday and retiring 11 of the 12 batters he faced. 

Bogue gave up only four hits and one run as he forced the Lynx into a pair of double play balls in the eighth and ninth to get out of any kind of a jam and allow Millsaps to win the best-of-3 series, 2-1. 

On the weekend, Bogue carried a 1.29 ERA in seven total innings of work and surrendered just two walks while striking out five.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity earned the series-opening win over Oglethorpe in his only game pitched over the last week, sparking the Tigers to the series sweep that advanced them to the SCAC Championships. Bronson gave up one run on four hits in the series opener on Friday, tying his career-best mark with 14 strikeouts. The only run he gave up was a runner that reached after a strikeout in the first inning, and he walked just two batters. For the season, Bronson has had four games in which he has struck out 11 or more batters, and leads the team with 7-3 overall record and his 2.16 ERA. He has four complete games on the year – two of which were shutouts – and he has struck out 83 batters in 66.2 innings of work. Senior right-hander Aaron Meyers of DePauw pitched a six-hit complete game shutout over Austin College in the third and deciding game against the 'Roos in the SCAC Divisional Tournament. Meyers allowed just six singles and just one Austin runner made it past second. The shutout was the first of his DePauw career and the complete game his second. First-year right-hander Kyle Belski of Southwestern
made the best start of his young career at the SCAC Divisional to push the Pirates through the SCAC Championship Tournament. The tall righty allowed just one hit through the first six innings and struck out a career-high eight Centre batters. He scattered six hits and allowed two earned run in picking up the victory and moving his record to 3-4. The Pirates have won three of his last four starts. Senior left-hander Robert Flanagan of Rhodes threw a gem on Friday as the Lynx defeated Millsaps 14-2. Flanagan picked up his 30th career win which ranks him second on the all-time SCAC list for wins. He threw a complete game on Friday, scattering four hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award, and Hendrix did not play.
 


WEEK 10

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 7th through Sunday, April 13th)

MIKE STOUT OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-1, 205-pound junior first baseman/designated hitter from Carmel, Ind., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 7 through Sunday, April 13.

Stout
hit .706 (12-17) in the Rhodes series with 11 RBI and a 1.29 slugging percentage in the four games as the Tigers wrapped up the top seed from Eastern Division with a series split with the Lynx.

For the week, Stout was 12-for-19 (.632) with nine runs scored and 12 RBI and had two doubles, a triple and two home runs as the 25th-ranked Tigers went 4-2 in six games.

For the season, Stout .389 (seventh in the SCAC) and slugging .694 (third in the SCAC). He has scored 38 runs (tied for seventh in the SCAC) and has three triples (tied for seventh in the SCAC) and seven home runs (tied for third in the SCAC) among his 42 hits.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior designated hitter Jake Jones of Centre had a big week in helping the Colonels go 3-2 and and win three conference games to ensure Centre of a third place finish and birth in the SCAC Tournament. Jones hit .600 (9-15) in the five games with eight runs batted in and four runs scored. Of his nine hits, two went for doubles and one for a home run. Jones also walked once, was hit by a pitch once and stole a base in his only attempt in finishing the week with a .933 slugging percentage and .611 on-base percentage. He entered the week with only one three-hit performance in the first 25 games, but had two three-hit performances this past week as well as a two-hit effort. Jones hit in only four of the five games on the week as he also pitched a complete-game in a 4-2 win over Sewanee to clinch a tournament birth. With his week, the junior raised his batting average from .244 to .301.
Junior outfielder Tait Hendrix of Millsaps launched his first career home run (solo shot) over the weekend en route to a .583 week (7-for-12) at the plate to extend his career-best hit streak to six games. A weekend starter on the mound, Hendrix got a chance to show off his hitting skills and speed on the bases, slugging .917, grabbing 11 total bases, scoring four runs and picking up three stolen bases. Hendrix also carried a .615 on-base percentage in four games played (two starts). Senior first baseman/designated hitter Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes led the Lynx offense as they scored 37 runs in a four-game series against DePauw this weekend. On the week Vanaman was 8-for-20 (.400) with one double, two triples and two home runs - giving him a slugging percentage of .950. He also had nine RBIs and seven runs scored. His eight hits gives him a career total of 229, ninth on the SCAC all-time list. On the season, Vanaman is 12th in the SCAC in doubles, seventh in triples and seventh in runs scored. First-year infielder Brandon Ricco of Birmingham-Southern started all five games this week and led the Panthers with a .417 average, going 8-for-17 at the plate with 11 RBI, three runs scored and three sac-flies along with a .429 on base percentage. Ricco went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two sac-flies and a run scored in BSC’s 11-7 win over Sewanee. He was 0-for-4 in a 5-4 loss in game one at Oglethorpe, drawing a bases loaded walk for an RBI. He rebounded in game two to go 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. In Sunday’s doubleheader sweep against the Petrels, Ricco went 3-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored. He was 2-for-4 in game one with three RBI and a run scored and was 1-for-2 with an RBI in game two. Sophomore infielder Andrew Llano of Oglethorpe led the Petrels to a 3-2 week including an upset victory over #14 Emory and a SCAC split with Birmingham-Southern. He hit .473 (9-19) with five runs scored and five RBIs with a home run included among his nine hits. He had at least two hits in 3 of the 5 games. His best game clinched a playoff berth for the Petrels when they beat the Panthers in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader. Llano went 3-for-4, including a three-run shot over the left field wall, scored three times and knocked in three runs. Junior infielder/catcher Steven Ramos of Trinity went 6-for-12 (.500) last week, helping the Tigers earn a series split with Millsaps College and lock up the West’s top seed in the process. Ramos played in four of the team’s six games, scoring two runs and driving in a team-high five RBI. He hit a double and a home run – the first of his career – over the weekend, and didn’t have an error in 33 chances defensively. For the season, Ramos is hitting .360 (27-75) with 13 runs and 14 RBI. He has four doubles and one homer this year, playing in 29 games overall. Austin College, Hendrix, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 7th through Sunday, April 13th)

JOHN TSCHANTZ OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-4, 245-pound senior right-hander from Winnetka, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 7 through Sunday, April 13.

In a four-game series where the teams combined to score 78 runs, Tschantz was a dominating presence on the bump for the Tigers.

He
pitched a two-hit shutout in the series opener against Rhodes, defeating the Lynx 6-0 on Friday. Tschantz struck out five and walked four in tossing his second complete-game shutout of the season.

After this weekend's performance, Tschantz lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.63. The senior is attempting to become just the second pitcher in SCAC history to lead the league in ERA twice in a career. His 2.19 ERA as a freshman in 2005 was the league's best.

In addition, Tschantz leads the SCAC in opponent's batting average (.200) and is seventh in innings pitched (60.2) and tied for second in wins (7).


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Jay Hollenbeck of Millsaps, i
n two appearances on the week (both starts), posted a 1-0 mark with a 1.93 ERA to move to an SCAC best 16-1 all-time in a Millsaps uniform. Hollenbeck held opponents to a .231 batting average in 52 at-bats, scattering 12 hits, six runs (three earned), five strikeouts and just three walks in outings against Louisiana College and Trinity University. The Memphis native tossed 7.0 innings and gave up two earned runs against the ‘Cats to earn a no-decision, while coming up big in the Majors’ weekend finale win over TU and scattering four hits in 7.0 innings to help Millsaps to a split. Hollenbeck has improved each week after carrying a 99.00 ERA after a tough outing in Week 1, bringing his ERA all the way down to a 6.15 with quality starts and relief appearances the previous four games. First-year lefthander Clay Malcolm of Birmingham-Southern went 1-0 on the week, recording a complete game in a 7-1 win against Oglethorpe on Sunday. He tossed seven innings with three strikeouts while allowing one-run and three hits. After allowing one run on two hits in the first inning, Malcolm allowed the next 10 batters and 11-of-12 through and yielded just one hit over the final six innings of the contest. The complete game was the BSC pitching staff’s third of the season. Junior right-hander Jake Jones of Centre came up big for the Colonels in hurling a complete-game in a 4-2 win over Sewanee to clinch a birth in the SCAC Tournament. Jones improved to 4-2 on the year with his third straight complete-game effort. He allowed seven hits and only two runs with three strikeouts to help Centre qualify for the conference tournament for the second consecutive season. The junior also lowered his earned run average to 3.00 good for second on the team. Senior right-hander Nick Greenfield of Oglethorpe went 3.1 innings against nationally-ranked Emory University, giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out two. Then, on Saturday, Greenfield came out of the pen and picked up the win against Birmingham-Southern in a 5-4 OU victory. Greenfield went 3.0 innings giving up three hits and two runs while striking out two. First-year left-hander Jordan Suydam of Hendrix earned the team’s only victory this weekend against Southwestern. He tossed eight innings, yielded seven hits, three runs (all earned), walked two and fanned five for his third win of the year. Junior left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity went 1-1 last week, highlighted by a 5-3 complete-game victory over Millsaps on Saturday afternoon – a win that ensured a split for the Tigers in the SCAC series. He allowed five runs – four earned – in nine innings of work last week. He struck out seven in Saturday’s win over the Majors. For the season, Bronson leads the team with six victories, sporting a 6-3 record and an ERA of 2.26 – also the top mark on the team. He has three complete games in his seven starts, and also has collected three saves in six relief appearances. Bronson is second on the team with 69 strikeouts in 59.2 innings this season, and opponents are hitting just .252 against him this year. Austin College, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 9

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 31st through Sunday, April 6th)

MICHAEL MURPHY OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 5-11, 185-pound junior catcher from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Murphy
had another strong SCAC performance this past weekend as the Pirates took three of four from Austin College. 

Murphy extended his current hitting streak to nine games while going a combined 9-for-16 at the plate, good for a .563 average. 

The junior catcher totaled 10 RBI in the four games and scored four runs. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Murphy was 4-for-5 with six RBI, three runs scored and a pair of home runs. 

Murphy now has 11 doubles (tied for 10th in the SCAC) and six home runs (tied for fourth in the SCAC) on the year and 33 runs batted in (seventh in the SCAC). He raised his season average from .324 to .355 (15th in the SCAC).

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior outfielder Ben Jeffers of Centre had a big week in helping the Colonels go 4-1 on the week, including a non-conference 12-6 win over rival Transylvania and winning three out of four games from conference foe Oglethorpe. Jeffers hit .529 (9-17) with three doubles, three runs scored and four runs driven in for a .706 slugging percentage. He also registered a .652 on base percentage with three walks and three hit by pitches and a stolen base. The senior was a perfect four for four in the final game of the weekend against Oglethorpe, marking his second four-hit game of the season. With his week, Jeffers raised his batting average from .403 to .427 to lead Centre. Senior leftfielder Matt Kleine of DePauw hit safely in all five games and drove in four in the series finale with Sewanee with a single, double and triple. For the week, Kleine hit .438 (7-16) with four doubles and a triple and he drove in six and scored four runs. He finished the weekend with an .813 slugging percentage. Junior catcher Russ Boyd of Millsaps went a combined 7-for-17 (.412) from the plate with 11 total bases, five RBIs, four walks and his third home run of the year to push his season average out to .309 as the Majors went 4-1. Boyd went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and his team-leading 14th double of the season to lift Millsaps to a 7-4 win over Mississippi College and picked up at least a hit in all four games of the Hendrix series to stretch his hitting-streak out to five games. Boyd also carried a .647 slugging percentage on the week and found his way on base .524 percent of the time. Senior first baseman Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes led the Lynx to a 4-1 record on the week. His bat sparked the teams as the Lynx took 3 out of 4 from Birmingham Southern. Vanaman went 8-for-20 (.400) on the week with three doubles, six runs scored and five RBI. His eight hits brings him to a total of 221 in his career which ranks him 10th on the all-time SCAC hit list. First-year leftfielder Drew Leachman of Birmingham-Southern hit .500, going 7-for-14 in four starts versus Rhodes College this week. Leachman scored four runs and had eight RBI with a .500 on base percentage. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday. He was 4-for-5 with six RBI, three runs scored and a double in BSC’s 11-3 win in game one versus Rhodes on Sunday. The six RBI performance ranks third on the school’s single game RBI list. Junior centerfielder Daniel Ward of Hendrix was 7-for-16 with two homers, a double, three runs, a four RBI in a four-game series against Millsaps College. He currently ranks among league leaders in batting average (.430 / second), slugging percentage (.770 / second), on-base percentage (.512 / fifth), runs scored (47 / first), hits (58 / first), doubles (19 / tied for first), home runs (7 / third) and total bases (104 / first). Sophomore first baseman Evan Jones of Trinity was 6-for-9 (.667) with two games in two wins for Trinity last week, cracking three doubles among his six hits. Jones led the Tigers with seven RBI last week, also scoring two runs. In Tuesday’s win over Texas Lutheran, Jones was 3-for-5 with five RBI, then went 3-3 with two RBI in a 3-2 win over Schreiner. Jones, who entered last week as the national leader in RBI and tied for third in doubles, is leading the SCAC with a .452 batting average this season. He is in the top five in the SCAC in hits, runs, doubles, homers, total bases, and RBI. He needs one more double to tie Trinity’s school record for a single season, and is nine RBI from tying that school record as well. Austin College, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 31st through Sunday, April 6th)

JOHN HERBERT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 185-pound senior right-hander from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Herbert came up big once again for the Colonels starting both ends of a doubleheader sweep against Oglethorpe Saturday, April 5.

Herbert tossed a two-hit complete game in the 3-1 series opener, allowing one unearned run for his fifth complete game of the season. The senior pitcher then started game two and threw two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out the side in his final inning of the day in an 8-6 win.

His seven strikeouts on the day gave him 67 for the season (tied for second in the SCAC) in only 58.0 innings of work and tied a Centre single season record for strikeouts. Herbert also lowered his team-leading ERA from 2.20 to 1.86 (second in the SCAC) in not allowing an earned run in nine-innings of work. He is now 5-0 (tied for fifth in wins in the SCAC) on the season in eight outings.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw pitched a four-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over Sewanee on Saturday. Alland struck out six and walked two in his only action of the week.
Junior right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes threw a complete game shutout (his second of the season) on Saturday against Birmingham Southern going 7.0 innings giving up four hits, walking two and striking out five in route to a 4-0 victory. On the season Holt is 6-3 with a 2.08 ERA (fourth in the SCAC). He also leads the SCAC in innings pitched 60.2 and shutouts (2) and is ninth in opposing batting average at .254 and tied for second in wins with six. Senior left-hander Travis Bogue of Millsaps scattered 10 strikeouts and gave up just two runs in 9.0 innings of work to post a 2.00 ERA with a 1-0 mark in two appearances. The senior southpaw from Madison tossed a complete-game in Game 3 of a 4-game home series against Hendrix, giving up two runs and striking out seven to improve to 6-3 on the season in a 5-2 win. First-year right-hander Kyle Belski of Southwestern earned his second consecutive victory on Saturday as he threw a complete game (eight innings) against Austin College. He limited the 'Roos to just seven singles in the game and one earned run. The right-hander recorded six strikeouts. Belski is now 2-3 on the season and 2-0 in SCAC play. First-year right-hander Tyler Steed of Austin College picked up the ‘Roos lone win in their four game series with Southwestern over the weekend, going 8.1 strong innings while allowing just six hits and three runs. Steed struck out six batters while walking three to pick up the victory. Senior right-hander Brian Oates of Trinity followed his 15-strikeout performance with another solid outing against Schreiner last week. Oates struck out nine batters in six innings of shutout baseball on Wednesday, giving up just two hits to earn the victory. For the season, Oates second on the team with a 3.12 ERA in nine appearances, holding a team-best record of 5-1 and striking out 69 batters. His 69 strikeouts lead the SCAC, and he is ninth in the league in ERA. Birmingham-Southern, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 8

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 24th through Sunday, March 30th)

KYLE FELIX OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 205-pound first-year designated hitter from Woodside, Calif., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30.

Felix led the Tigers in hitting last week, sparking the team to a 5-0 record that included a four-game weekend sweep at Austin College.

Felix hit .556 (10-18) for the week, cracking a double, a triple, and two home runs in the five games. He scored six runs and led the team with 11 RBI and 19 total bases. He had eight RBI in Saturday’s doubleheader at Austin College.

Felix finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.056 and an on-base percentage of .571. Both of his home runs were hit over the weekend against Austin College.

For the season, Felix is hitting .330 (30-91) with 19 runs and 29 RBI. The 29 RBI is good for second on the team, though nearly 40% of those were driven in this week. He has totaled five doubles and two triples, as well as five home runs – which is also second on the team.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
First-year utility player Brent Lindsey of Rhodes continues to pace the Lynx as he went 6 for 14 on the week (.428) and also walked eight times and was hit by a pitch to post a .652 on-base percentage. For the week, Lindsey had 11 RBI raising his season total to 34 (third in the SCAC). He also added nine runs scored with a double, triple and his second home run of the season. For the year Lindsey is hitting .382 (ninth in the SCAC). Junior centerfielder Justin Weiner of DePauw hit safely in the Tigers' final seven games of the week and finished the week with 13 hits in 30 at bats (.433). He stole 11 bases in as many attempts and scored at least two runs in five of the eight games - finishing the week with 15 runs scored. He also had two doubles and a home run among his 13 hits and drove in seven. Weiner also played errorless ball in centerfield in all eight games - handling all 18 of his chances. Junior catcher Michael Murphy of Southwestern helped power the Pirates to a series win over #23 Millsaps as SU took three of four from the Majors. Murphy went 7-for-15 on the weekend and raised his batting average from .300 to .324 on the season. Five of his seven hits were for extra bases as he totaled four doubles and one home run off of Major pitching. The catcher drove in six runs and scored three times for the Pirates. On the weekend, he had a .500 on-base percentage and he now has a five-game hitting streak going. Murphy also struck out just once during the series. Junior first baseman Matt Giza of Hendrix was 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, a walk, a sacrifice fly, three runs and three RBI in the Warriors 17-10 victory over No. 19 University of the Ozarks on March 25. Junior outfielder Hunter Owen of Millsaps batted .462 (6-for-13) on the week for Millsaps with five RBIs and three home runs to extend his season-long hitting streak out to nine games and push his season average back to .402. The junior also drew seven walks and scored six runs, while staying perfect on the season with four more stolen bases to improve to 18-for-18 on the year. Owen is just one homer shy of tying the 11 he hit last year and four shy of tying the Millsaps single-season record of 14 set by Garner Wetzel in 2006. First-year third baseman Taylor Irwin of Sewanee went 7-for-17 on the week (.412) batting in six RBIs and hitting one home run. The Tigers are 4-17 and 2-4 in the SCAC East after going 1-2 against Rhodes last weekend. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Centre and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week

BRIAN OATES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 205-pound senior right-hander from Huntsville, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30.

Oates led the Tigers to a 5-0 record last week, earning two of the victories himself and recording a team-best 16 total strikeouts. He was 2-0 with an ERA of 1.80 last week, giving up just two earned runs in 10 innings of work. 

The highlight of his week was in the series opener at Austin College, in which Oates struck out a career-high 15 batters to lead the team to a 6-2 win on Friday. The 15 strikeouts were a team season high, as well as the fourth-highest strikeout total in school history. 

He also earned the win against McMurry earlier in the week, pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief to put the Tigers in position to win that game.

For the season, Oates is 4-1 with an ERA of 3.52 in eight appearances. The complete game this weekend was his first of the year – third of his career – and he has yielded just 18 earned runs in 46 innings. Oates is also the team leader with 60 strikeouts this year, and is now fifth in Trinity history with 234. That total also puts him in ninth in SCAC history.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior right-hander Wes Willis of Southwestern won his sixth game of the season on Friday (Mar. 28) and his third-straight decision. The junior righty threw seven innings for a complete game win as the Pirates run-ruled the Majors 14-2. Willis allowed just two earned run on six hits while striking out 10 and walking only one. He is now 6-1 on the season and has struck out 63 batters while walking just eight, good for a 7.88 K/BB ratio. Senior right-hander John Tschantz of DePauw pitched a three-hit complete game in Saturday's 3-0 win against Centre. He finished the week with an ERA of 1.00 - allowing just one run in nine innings while striking out five and walking two. First-year right-hander Taylor Babich of Rhodes picked up his first and second career wins this past week. On Tuesday he pitched the final 3.0 innings against Mississippi College to earn the victory as the Lynx scored three in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the 6-5 victory. Babich did not allow a runner to reach base while striking out four. He followed this performance with his first college career start against Sewanee. Babich picked up the win as he went 7.0 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs without walking a batter and striking out four. On the week he went 10.0 innings surrendering six hits, no walks and two earned runs while striking out eight. For the season he has a 2.57 ERA, and is 2-0 with two saves. Opponents are hitting .156 against the freshman. First-year right-handed pitcher Aaron Williams of Millsaps, in his only appearance on the week, threw a complete-game, 4-hitter to knock off Southwestern in Game 2 of a 4-game series, 7-1, surrendering just one run while striking out three and holding opponents to a.160 average. Williams is now a perfect 3-0 during his freshman campaign with a 3.67 ERA and two saves. Sophomore right-hander Greg Bartleski of Sewanee pitched his third complete game of the season and his third straight win against Rhodes on Sunday. He allowed three hits, three runs, and struck out seven. The Tigers are 4-17 and 2-4 in the SCAC East after going 1-2 against Rhodes last weekend. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Hendrix and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 7

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 17th through Sunday, March 23rd)

ANDY WHITE OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-1, 180-pound sophomore shortstop from Dallas, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 17 through Sunday, March 23.

White came up big at the plate as the ‘Roos swept Hendrix in four games, batting .429 with a home run, a triple, a double and nine runs batted in. 

White had a .857 slugging percentage and 12 total bases, and also scored eight times during the week.


For the season, White is hitting .386 (ninth in the SCAC) and slugging .602 (10th in the SCAC). He has scored 22 runs (tied for seventh in the SCAC) and has driven in 16 with nine doubles (tied for seventh in the SCAC), two triples (tied for eighth in the SCAC) and two home runs.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore first baseman Evan Jones of Trinity led the Tigers to a 6-1 record last week, including a 3-1 SCAC series win over Southwestern. Jones hit .500 (14-28) during the seven games, scoring eight runs and collecting 14 RBI. He cracked six doubles and a home run, totaling 23 bases for a slugging percentage of .821 for the week. Against Southwestern, Jones drove in six runs to lead the Tigers to their second SCAC series win of the year, and a tie for first place in the SCAC West Division. For the season, Jones leads Trinity with a .436 batting average, nabbing 41 hits in 94 at-bats. He is tied for the team lead with 31 runs and has also driven in 42 more, which is more than double the next-highest Tiger player’s RBI total.  Jones also leads the team in doubles (13), triples (3), and home runs (5), as well as slugging percentage (.798) and on-base percentage (.509). Sophomore outfielder Chris Lucas of Oglethorpe paced the Petrel offense this week as they took 3 out of 4 from Sewanee. Lucas was hot all week hitting .500 (11 for 22) while knocking in 10 runs and scoring four times. He had two doubles, a home run and a stolen base. In Friday's 20-2 victory, Lucas was 3-for-4 with five RBI including his home run. On Saturday, he went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader split with three RBI - including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth of Saturday's 6-5 win. He ended the series with a 1-for-4 performance with a run scored and a RBI on Sunday. For the season Lucas is hitting .337 with 15 RBI’s and 12 runs scored. He’s hit two home runs and three doubles. Junior outfielder Hunter Owen of Millsaps
went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and five runs scored in a 21-16 win over No. 21 Illinois Wesleyan, the Majors’ only competition of the week. The junior from Jackson launched a pair of home runs to give him seven on the early season and also recorded a double en route to 11 total bases in the win and a 2.200 slugging percentage. Sophomore infielder Taylor Hoffman of DePauw went 4-for-8 in the first three games with Birmingham-Southern including a double with three runs and one RBI. He walked thee times for a .636 on-base percentage and finished the week with a .750 slugging percentage. Hoffman went 4-for-6 in the final two games of weekend. Junior outfielder Jeffrey Williams of Centre hit .533 (8-15) and scored six runs from the lead-off position in helping Centre split four games last week. Williams had three multiple hit games and scored at least one run in all four games. The junior outfielder was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a loss Birmingham Southern Monday and then went 2-for-4 with a run scored in a loss to Piedmont. In the Colonels sweep over Maryville, Williams was 4-for-8 on the day with three runs scored and two more driven in. He also stole two bases in two attempts, walked once, was hit by a pitch once and was flawless in the field with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 10 chances. In the four games, Williams raised his batting average from .295 all the way to .356, good for second on the team, while leading the team with 21 hits. Junior first baseman Taylor Burns of Sewanee had six runs, four RBIs, three homeruns, and a double in Sewanee's doubleheader last Saturday against Oglethorpe. The Tigers split the day with the Petrels and went 1-3 on the weekend. Burns is batting .338 and has 23 hits and 15 RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Eric Mathis of Hendrix went 6-for-13 with two runs, one triple, two homers and five RBI in Hendrix’s second conference series of the year. He tallied a .462 batting average, 1.077 slugging percentage and .533 on-base percentage. Birmingham-Southern, Rhodes and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 17th through Sunday, March 23rd)

SAM BRIEND OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 195-pound sophomore right-hander from Cumming, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 17 through Sunday, March 23.

Briend
went 2-0 this week with both wins coming against Sewanee. The first win came in the third game of the series where he went 3.0 innings of relief, giving up just one hit and one run. Briend slammed the door shut in the ninth by striking out the side to secure Saturday's 6-5 win.

He then came back to start the fourth game of the series the following day and went a gutsy 5.1 innings and struck out four while allowing two runs on six hits as the Petrels prevailed 12-2.

For the week, Briend finished up 2-0 with eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings pitched and is now 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA on the season. He has struck out 24 batters in his 32 innings of work.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity tossed a four-hit shutout in his only appearance for the Tigers last week, striking out seven in the seven-inning game that evened the SCAC series at one game each. Bronson gave up just one hit and struck out five batters over the final four innings of the game, earning his team-leading fourth win of the season.  It was also the third shutout in the past two years for the junior pitcher. For the season, Bronson is 4-2 with an ERA of 2.21 to lead the Tiger pitching staff. He has struck out 50 batters in 40.2 innings of work, holding opponents to a batting average of .221 this season. Bronson is also one of two pitchers to record a save this season, and has two complete games on the year. Junior right-hander Cory Stevens of Austin College had perhaps the finest outing of his career in an 8-0 victory over Hendrix over the weekend, throwing a complete game shutout in which he struck out a career-high 12 batters against just three walks. Stevens scattered seven hits over seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Senior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw started the series with Birmingham-Southern by pitching seven shutout innings and allowing six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in Saturday's 8-0 victory over the Panthers. Sophomore right-hander Greg Bartleski of Sewanee pitched seven innings and a complete game in Sewanee's win over Oglethorpe Saturday. The sophomore from Charlottesville, Va. committed one error, walked one batter, and struck out four in Sewanee's 13-3 win. He is 2-2 on the year and has struck out 41. Senior pitcher John Herbert of Centre continued to perform well for the Colonels tossing a four-hit complete-game shutout against the defending Great South Conference champion Maryville (Tenn.). It was Herbert's second win of the season against the Scots, which entered the game winning six of their previous eight games. The senior right-hander allowed only four hits through seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks, facing just three batters over the minimum. After two Scots reach base in the first inning, Herbert allowed only two more Scots to reach base the remainder of the game. He retired seven in a row from the first to third inning and then six more in a row from the fourth through the sixth. He allowed only one Maryville hitter to reach third base the entire game in completing his third straight start of the season. The shutout also marks his second complete-game shutout of his career. He also has combined for one shutout win. On the season, Herbert is 3-0 with a 1.80 earned run average and 52 strikeouts through 40.0 innings. His 52 strikeouts are already two more than his previous single-season high of 50 he had last year in 77.2 innings. Opponents are now hitting only .226 off him and he has now pitched more innings during the SCAC era than any other pitcher in school history (248.3). Birmingham-Southern,
Hendrix, Millsaps, Rhodes and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 6

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 10th through Sunday, March 16th)

J.D. HULSE OF BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE, a 5-11, 170-pound first-year centerfield from Roswell, Ga., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 10 through Sunday, March 16.

Hulse
went 6-for-11 with a .545 average, scoring six runs with a triple, a home run and four RBI in three starts from the leadoff spot over the weekend. He had a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .615 on base percentage along with 11 total bases and three stolen bases in three attempts. 

Hulse went 1-for-2 with a single and three-runs scored and walked twice in a 12-6 win in game one of a SCAC doubleheader with Centre College on Sunday. In game two, he was 4-for-5 with three singles, a three-run home run, four RBI and two runs scored. His three-run home run highlighted a four-run sixth to help BSC end the game due to the NCAA 10-run rule. 

Hulse leads BSC with a .397 average, 21 runs scored and is 12-for-12 in stolen bases in 17 starts this season.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior centerfielder Daniel Ward of Hendrix hit for the cycle in the Warriors’ 9-2 loss to Trinity Friday night. Ward tagged a double in his first at bat, a home run in his second, a single in his third, a walk in his fourth and a triple in his final plate appearance of the contest. He continued to stay hot in Hendrix’s first SCAC series of the year and ended up going 11-for-13 (.846 BA) with 10 runs, four doubles, one triple, one home run and two RBI. Ward tallied 20 total bases over the weekend, a 1.538 slugging percentage and .889 on-base percentage. Trinity could only get Ward out two times over the series and he also was 2-for-2 in stolen bases. The 6-foot, 190-pound junior is leads the team with a .453 overall BA in 25 starts, 39 runs, 43 hits, five homers, 76 total bases, .535 OBP and is 9-for-9 in stolen bases. Ward has struck out just nine times on the year and collected 13 walks. Senior outfielder Richard Hurd of Rhodes paced the Lynx offense as they won 4 of 5 this week. Hurd became only the 18th player in SCAC history to join the exclusive 200 hit club on Friday night as he doubled in the first inning vs. Oglethorpe. On the week Hurd went 10 for 19 (.526) with four runs scored and six runs driven in. He had three doubles, two triples, two stolen bases and two bases on balls. On the season, Hurd is batting .347 with 26 hits.
Senior shortstop Hunter Abrams of Millsaps helped guide Millsaps to a 4-2 week to improve to 15-7 overall, batting .440 from the plate (11-for-25) with 14 total bases, 11 RBIs, eight runs scored, three doubles and three stolen bases. Abrams also carried a .452 on-base percentage in serving up a combined 56 runs (9.3 runs-per-game) for the Majors in six games. He also had three multi-hit games in the Austin College series (2-2) to add to his team-best 10. Senior second baseman Richard Falcone of Southwestern managed to raise his already lofty batting average from .483 to .493 during the past week. The Pirates’ second baseman went 8-for-15 for a .533 average during the week. He also drove in seven runs and scored six times while hitting three doubles and his second home run of the season. The senior also drew four walks and struck out just once. He now has 34 runs batted in in 20 games played and he has scored 25 runs. In the Pirates’ game against 2006 national champion Marietta College, Falcone was 4 of 6 with four RBI and two runs scored and he followed that performance by reaching base in every plate appearance against Concordia University, Nebraska. He was 3-for-3 in the game, with a double and a home run, scoring three runs and recording three RBI while also drawing two walks. Falcone has a season on-base percentage of .571, a slugging percentage of .693, and leads the SCAC in both batting average and runs batted in. He has recorded 11 multi-RBI games and 10 multi-hit games already this year. Sophomore shortstop Andy White of Austin College had a big weekend for the ‘Roos as they split their first conference weekend 2-2 against Millsaps.  White had five hits on the weekend, including a home run, a double, and a triple, and he scored five times. White led the team with 11 total bases. In addition, White made the defensive play of the weekend when he pulled off an unassisted triple play to get the ‘Roos out of a jam in the sixth inning on Sunday. Sophomore infielder Taylor Hoffman of DePauw had eight hits in 11 at bats (.727) as the Tigers went 5-1 over the week. Hoffman also scored four runs and drove in four more, and walked four times with two stolen bases. First-year designated hitter Kyle Felix of Trinity led the Tigers to a 3-3 record last week, posting a team-high .533 batting average in his five games played. Felix hit 8-for-15 for the week, scoring four runs and driving in eight more. He hit a double, a triple, and a pair of home runs in five games, finishing with a 1.133 slugging percentage to lead the team. In addition to his eight hits, Felix drew two walks and was hit by a pitch twice to push his on-base percentage to .632 for the week. For the season, Felix is hitting .304 (17-56) with 12 runs and 17 RBI, cracking three doubles and three homers. He has drawn 10 walks and has been hit five times on the year, starting 17 of the team’s 18 games this year. First-year third baseman Taylor Irwin of Sewanee played in eight games over spring break in Florida, batting .441 and scoring eight runs as the Tigers went 2-6. He also hit two doubles and a homerun. Centre and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 10th through Sunday, March 16th)

CHRIS CATALANOTTO OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 6-0, 180-pound senior left-hander from New Orleans, La., and TAIT HENDRIX OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-1, 205-pound junior left-hander from Jackson, Miss., have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 10 through Sunday, March 16.

Catalanotto picked up his second and third victories of the season as the Lynx went 4-1 on the week, including taking three of four in the team's inaugural SCAC series of the season.

On Sunday, Catalanotto pitched a complete game shutout versus conference foe Oglethorpe, going 7.0 innings while giving up five hits, no earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Earlier in the week, he pitched 5.0 scoreless innings against Rust College - surrendering only two hits.

On the week, Catalanotto pitched 12.0 innings, allowed no earned runs and seven hits while walking five and striking out 14. He improved his season record to 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA.


Hendrix
had another solid week on the mound for the Majors in a pair of starts, allowing one run (unearned) and only five hits in 15.1 innings to post a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA. 

In 50 plate appearances, the junior struck out 14 batters against six walks and held them to a .100 batting average. 

Hendrix tossed a career-high 6.1 innings of scoreless, three-hit ball in an 8-1 win over Mississippi College, followed by 9.0 innings of two-hit ball in a 3-1 win against the ‘Roos on Sunday, scattering seven strikeouts and paving the way for a weekend conference split.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore right-hander Greg Bartleski of Sewanee went 1-0 over the break on three appearances, earning a complete-game shutout versus Newbury. He struck out 15 batters and only walked three and allowed just two hits on the day. In all three appearances, he totaled 19 strikeouts in 10 innings. First-year right-hander Michael McCalib of Birmingham-Southern
pitched a complete game in a 14-2 win over Centre College on Sunday. McCalib, who earned his first win of the season to improve to 1-0, gave up two-runs while scattering six hits with three strikeouts and one-walk in seven innings pitched. He retired eight straight batters from the third through the fifth innings and four straight to close the game. Senior right-hander Ryan Poffenroth of Trinity appeared in two of the team’s six games on the week, earning a win in his only start, and coming on in relief in another. Poffenroth gave up just two earned runs on eight hits through 7.1 innings of work, striking out 10 and posting an ERA of 2.45. For the season, Poffenroth leads the team with an ERA of 1.80 in his 25 innings pitched, giving up just five earned runs and 16 hits. Opponents are hitting just .184 against him on the year, with a 2-0 record and 25 strikeouts. Senior right-hander John Tschantz of DePauw pitched seven shutout innings in Sunday's 8-4 win over Lakeland - the first game of a doubleheader sweep for the Tigers. Tschantz struck out three and walked one while scattering five hits. First-year lefthander Jordan Suydam of Hendrix started on the hill for the Warriors in their 3-2 loss to Trinity Saturday. Suydam held the Tigers to just two runs and gave Hendrix the chance it needed to come from behind and tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The 5-foot-9, 170 pound lefty tossed eight innings and gave up just six hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and two strike outs. Austin College, Centre, Oglethorpe and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 5

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 3rd through Sunday, March 9th)

RICHARD FALCONE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 5-10, 180-pound senior second baseman from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 3 through Sunday, March 9.

Falcone
recorded a batting average of .533 this past week, going 8 for 15 at the plate as the Pirates split four games last week, including a 20-4 whipping of No. 23 Mary Hardin-Baylor. 

Falcone drove in 10 runs in the four games, including a six-RBI game against the 23rd-ranked Crusaders. He also scored six runs and drew a pair of walks while only striking out once. 

Falcone is now batting .483 on the season, which is good for second in the SCAC.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore first baseman Evan Jones of Trinity led the TU Tigers to a 2-1 record last week, hitting .500 (7-14) during the three games, and leading the team in runs and RBI as well. Jones was held without a hit in the first game of the week, then went on an incredible tear during the two-game weekend series sweep over DeSales. He was 7 for 10 in those two games, collecting six runs and six RBI overall. In Saturday’s lopsided win, Jones was 5 for 6 with five runs scored and two RBI, cracking two doubles in the game. His five hits was one away from the school record, while the five runs scored tied Trinity’s single game record. For the season, Jones leads the team with a .436 batting average, collecting 17 hits in 39 at-bats during his 11 games played. He has four doubles, a triple, and a team-high three homers. Jones has driven in 22 runs and scored 16 more this season, holding a slugging percentage of .821, and an on-base percentage of .542 – leading the team in all four categories. Senior first baseman Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes picked up his 200th career hit becoming only the 17th player in SCAC history to collect 200+ hits. On the week, Vanaman was 4-for-9 (.444) with one double, two runs scored, one RBI and two walks. He also stole three bases and was hit by pitch three times. Vanaman reached base safely nine out of 15 plate appearances for a .600 on-base percentage. Junior outfielder Justin Weiner of DePauw went 3 for 5 in two wins over Blackburn with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Weiner slugged 1.200 in the two-game set and had an on-base percentage of .714. Senior designated hitter Derrik Boland of Millsaps added to his seven-game hitting streak, sending a solo-shot over the 20-foot tall rightfield fence to help Millsaps pick up its first hit of the game in the fifth inning and take a 1-0 lead, eventually defeating Wabash College by a 3-1 count. It marked Boland’s second home run of the year and ninth of his career. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 3rd through Sunday, March 9th)

JOHN HERBERT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 185-pound senior right-hander from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 3 through Sunday, March 9.

Herbert threw his second career nine-inning complete game in a 4-2 win over defending Great South Conference champion Maryville (Tenn.) College on Wednesday.

Herbert allowed only four hits and two runs - only one earned - while recording his second straight double-digit strike-out effort as he mowed down 10 Scots.

The win was Herbert's first of the season after picking up two no-decisions in his first two starts. It also sets a Centre career record (SCAC-era only) for wins with 17.

Herbert currently owns a 2.45 earned run average (10th in the SCAC) in 22.0 innings and has struck out 28 (tied for third in the SCAC) while allowing teams to hit only .247 against him.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw allowed just one run and three hits in a seven-inning complete game win over Blackburn. Alland struck out eight and walked just one. Senior right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes continues to dominate his opponents. On Saturday Holt picked up the win as the Lynx defeated Wabash College 5-1. He went 7.0 innings, scattering four hits while allowing one earned run. He walked one and struck out seven. Holt is now 3-2 on the year with a ERA of 1.80. On the season he has pitched 35 innings allowing only five walks while striking out 29. Senior right-hander Ryan Poffenroth of Trinity came on in relief in two of the team’s three games last week, totaling 4.2 innings pitched without allowing a run. Poffenroth pitched four innings with four strikeouts in Friday’s win over DeSales, earning the victory for the Tigers. In his 4.2 innings, Poffenroth not only held opponents scoreless, but also did not allow a hit in 13 at-bats. For the season, Poffenroth holds an ERA of 1.53, which is good for second on the team. He has pitched in four games and holds a record of 1-0, pitching in 17.2 total innings. He has yielded four runs – only three of which were earned – and has struck out 15 batters. Opponents are hitting just .140 against him this season. First-year left-hander Brantley Freeman of Southwestern picked up his first collegiate victory against DeSales University as he threw 7.2 innings in relief and held the Bulldogs to just one unearned run. The lefty allowed just three hits, all singles, while striking out eight and walking four. He lowered his season ERA from 5.25 to 3.20. Freeman is now 1-0 on the year. Senior left-hander Travis Bogue of Millsaps, in the Majors’ only game of the week, scattered five hits and no runs in 5.0 innings of work to improve his season record to 3-2 and help Millsaps win its fifth-straight overall. Bogue also picked up one strikeout, while retiring seven of the first 10 Wabash College batters he faced. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 4

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 25th through Sunday, March 2nd)

DANIEL WARD OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a 6-0, 190-pound junior centerfielder from Tacoma, Wash., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 25 through Sunday, March 2.

Ward led the Warriors to a 3-1 record over the week - hitting .643 (9 of 14) with two home runs, one triple, one double and five singles. He also scored 10 runs and drove in seven more.

Ward's 18 total bases in the four games was good for a slugging percentage of 1.286. The junior also walked three times, was hit by a pitch and stole three bases.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior second baseman Richard Falcone of Southwestern
raised his batting average from .346 to .467 this past week as he went 12 for 19 at the plate for a .632 average. Falcone totaled eight runs batted in, including four RBI in a game against Hardin-Simmons, and eight runs scored. His hits included a pair of doubles and a triple. He also recorded a steal and was hit by a pitch three times. Falcone also did not strike out once over the last five games. Junior outfielder Justin Weiner of DePauw hit .462 (6-13) on the week, including a slugging percentage of .583 and an on-base percentage of .632 as the Tigers went 4-0 over the weekend. Weiner scored seven runs, drove in two more and was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Junior catcher Russ Boyd of Millsaps turned in his best week in a Millsaps uniform this season in helping the Majors turn around an early-season slump with a four-game winning streak. Boyd hit a solid .409 from the plate (9-for-22) and carried a .636 slugging percentage with seven runs scored, six RBIs, five doubles and four walks in a 17-3 pounding of Division I Jacksonville State and a weekend sweep of LaGrange. Junior shortstop J.R. Bizzell of Rhodes was 5 for 13 (.387) with three runs scored and eight RBI. In Sunday's game Bizzell hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 6-6 before the Lynx exploded for another 12 runs en route to a 18-11 victory over Franklin College. He added another RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. On Saturday, Bizzell had a single driving in two to put the Lynx ahead 4-3 in the fourth and then came up in a big spot again in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at 5 and delivered again with a RBI single to give Rhodes a 6-5 lead - a game the Lynx would eventually win 7-6. He also added two walks and two stolen bases on the week. Defensively, Bizzell saved a number of runs with several exceptional plays in the field. Sophomore shortstop Steven Kull of Centre had a big week in helping the Colonels to a 2-1 record. Kull went 5 for 11 (.455) with three doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five more driven in. He also walked once, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, had a sacrifice fly and made only one error in 20 chances. In the Colonels 6-4 come from behind win over Asbury, Kull was two for two with two runs driven in, including a double. Three days later, he was three for five with three runs scored and two rbi in a 13-7 win over Monmouth. In that game, Kull hit his first career home-run, a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and also added two doubles. The sophomore shortstop also drove in a run and scored another in Centre's 9-8 loss to DePauw in 10 innings.  On the year, Kull is hitting .368 with a .737 slugging percentage and a .409 on-base percentage through five games. Sophomore shortstop Andy White of Austin College went 7-for-10 during a three game stretch for the 'Roos, including a 2-for-4 performance against ETBU with a pair of doubles and two RBI, to raise his season batting average to a team-leading .468 as the 'Roos went 2-1 during the week. First-year third baseman Dominick Robusto of Trinity led the Tigers to two victories last week, helping the team extend its win streak to five games. Robusto was 5 of 7 with one run and one RBI, posting an average of .714 for the week. He had a double and a home run among his five hits, leading the team with a slugging percentage of 1.286 in the two games. For the season, Robusto is second on the team with a .440 batting average, and is tied for second on the team with 11 hits in his 25 at-bats. He has three doubles and two runs scored, and Sunday’s homer was his first of the season. Birmingham-Southern, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 25th through Sunday, March 2nd)

WES WILLIS OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 5-10, junior right-hander from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 25 through Sunday, March 2.

Willis
threw a complete game shutout against #15 Texas Lutheran on Tuesday (Feb. 26) as the Pirates went on to a 9-0 win. He scattered five hits, all singles, over nine innings while striking out nine and walking none. 

Willis retired the side in order three times and struck out the side once. 

In the process, Willis improved his K/BB ration for the season to 11.5 and is now 2-1 on the season with an ERA of 3.93.
 

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander John Tschantz of DePauw pitched eight innings of two-hit shutout baseball in Saturday's 11-3 victory over Anderson. Tschantz struck out seven and walked just one in evening his season mark at 1-1.
Sophomore right-hander Will Chermak of Austin College blanked Ottawa University as the 'Roos cruised past the Braves 13-0 in five innings. Chermak needed only 52 pitches to pick up the shutout victory, his second of the season. He struck out two batters while walking none and scattered just four hits. Senior right-hander Brian Oates of Trinity earned the win in his only appearance of the week, defeating Huston-Tillotson for his second victory of the year. Oates gave up just one earned run (1.29 ERA for the week) on four hits through seven innings of work, walking three and striking out six. For the season, Oates is now 2-1 and improved his ERA to 2.79 on the season. Oates is second on the team with 21 strikeouts in 19.1 innings of work, and opponents are hitting just .186 against him this season. Senior right-hander Jeff Mueller of Rhodes picked up two wins in relief this weekend bringing his season totals to 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Mueller pitched 1 2/3 innings on Saturday giving up no runs and no hits in securing the victory. On Sunday he came in to pitch in the top of the seventh and went 2/3 of an inning - giving up one hit and no runs. Junior right-hander Drew Maddox of Millsaps, in two appearances on the week, stepped in the Majors’ lineup in crucial situations and came away with a 1-0 record, 0.00 ERA and a save in 4.0 innings of work. Maddox allowed just five hits and struck out five, while surrendering just one run (unearned) in a 4-1 week for Millsaps. Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 3

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 18th through Sunday, Feb. 24th)

EVAN JONES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 235-pound sophomore first baseman from Hillsborough, Calif., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 18 through Sunday, February 24.

Jones hit .538 (7-13) in four games last week, leading Trinity to a 3-1 record in games he played. He scored seven runs and drove in 13 more, accounting for nearly half of the team’s run total over the past five games.

Jones had two doubles and a triple to go with two home runs in the weekend series with Rutgers-Newark. He hit a grand slam and tallied seven RBI in Saturday’s win, coming within one of tying Trinity’s single-game record. 

For the week, Jones carried an astounding slugging percentage of 1.308, totaling 17 bases in seven hits. 

For the season, Jones leads the team with a .471 batting average, having eight hits in 17 at-bats. He is tied for the team lead with nine runs scored, and leads the team with 14 RBI. The next closest to him in RBI is five, held by four players. He has a slugging percentage of 1.235 this season and is reaching base 59.1% of the time he comes to the plate.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior catcher Matt Beesley of Rhodes paced the Lynx as they were 4-0 on the week, extending their winning streak to six. Beesley hit a grand slam in the first inning against Maryville (Tenn.) in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of the Scots. On the week Beesley bated .455 (5 for 11) and drove in seven while scoring three runs. He had a home run and a double and added a stolen base.
Junior outfielder Daniel Ward of Hendrix combined to go 7-of-14 with six runs, four RBI and five doubles from the lead off spot this weekend. He collected four doubles in the Warriors two wins on Sunday against Principia. Ward also drove in three runs in the opener on Sunday and scored three runs in the second game against the Panthers. Sophomore outfielder Blake Williams of Southwestern extended his hitting streak to five games this past week as he hit safely in all three games the Pirates played. He was 2-for-5 at Concordia with one run scored, then 2-for-4 against McMurry with three runs scored and two runs batted in and then he was 1-for-2 against Huston-Tillotson with one run scored. For the week, he was 5-for-11 for a .455 average with five runs scored and two driven in. He drew three walks as well for an on-base percentage of .571. Williams was also a perfect three of three in stolen bases. First-year outfielder Tony Malaschak of Millsaps led the Majors’ offensive attack despite a 1-3 week on the diamond, going a combined 8-for-19 (.421) from the plate with six runs, three doubles, two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. In the field, Malaschak also had a perfect fielding percentage, taking advantage of all 13 chances. Sophomore shortstop Andy White of Austin College had a big week at the plate for the ‘Roos, hitting .438 in four games. The second-year player had three doubles, scored three runs, and had three RBI over the course of the week. Birmingham-Southern, Centre, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 18th through Sunday, Feb. 24th)

EVAN BRONSON OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior left-hander from Midlothian, Va., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 18 through Sunday, February 24.

Bronson won in his only appearance last week, starting off the weekend series with Rutgers-Newark with a dominating performance.

Bronson struck out a career-high 14 batters on Friday, pitching seven innings and allowing just one hit to the 22 batters he faced. He struck out the first six batters of the game, setting the tone for the team’s 11-1 victory.

For the season, Bronson leads the team with an ERA of 0.64 and a 2-0 record. He has given up just one run on five hits through 14 innings of work, striking out 19 batters and holding opponents to a paltry .114 batting average against him.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior left-hander Robert Flanagan of Rhodes went 2-0 on the week. In his two starts he combined for 7.0 innings, yielding seven hits, one earned run, no walks and nine strikeouts. On the season Flanagan is 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA. First-year right-hander Drew Crofton of Birmingham-Southern came on in relief of starter Richard Vance to earn his second win of the season against The University of the South last Saturday. Crofton pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts while allowing no runs on four hits. The win pushed Crofton's record to 2-1. He retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced after entering the game in the third inning. Sophomore right-hander Dave Keine of Hendrix College picked up two wins in three appearances and didn't give up a run all weekend. He tossed 2.0 innings, walked three and struck out one for his first win of the season on Saturday. Keine tossed the last two innings of Sunday’s opener (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 SO) for his second win and he closed out the final game of the weekend (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 SO). He is now 2-4 on the year. Austin College, Centre, DePauw, Millsaps, Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 2

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 11th through Sunday, Feb. 17th)

HUNTER OWEN OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-3, 210-pound junior outfielder from Jackson, Miss., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 11 through Sunday, February 17.

Owen
paced the Millsaps offense in a 2-1 week on the diamond - which included a victory over No. 5 Emory University - hitting .444 from the plate (4-for-9) with nine total bases, three walks, two runs scored, three RBIs, two doubles and a solo home run. 

In a 10-0 win over Mississippi College on Thursday, Owen went 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs, his third double of the year and third home run, sending a towering shot over the left centerfield wall. 

He also carried a 1.000 slugging percentage on the weekend, while posting a .583 on-base percentage.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior first baseman/outfielder Eric Gonzales of Southwestern
started the season with a .500 batting average, connecting for seven hits in 14 at bats. He had a pair of doubles, scoring five runs and driving in four. In his four games, he has already put together three multi-hit games. Gonzales also has an on-base percentage of .563 after drawing a pair of walks. Sophomore outfielder John Reisig of Austin College had a big day against William Jewell in a doubleheader, going 4-for-7 at the plate (.571 BA) with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a triple. In the second game of the doubleheader, Reisig tripled to plate the tying run and then scored on a sacrifice fly to give the ‘Roos a 10-9 extra-inning victory. First-year catcher Sam Hill of Birmingham-Southern hit .667 in two games this week to help the Panthers to a 1-1 record. Hill went 4-for-6 at the plate with a run scored, three RBI and a double. He was walked twice and had a stolen base. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double in BSC’s 9-8 over Maryville (Tenn.) and was 2-for-2 with an RBI in game two against the Scots. First-year outfielder Kevin Calbick of Trinity opened his collegiate career in style with a 4-for-4 performance in Trinity’s season opener on Sunday at Concordia (TX) University, leading the team to the win. Calbick finished the weekend hitting .444 (4-9) to lead the team, including a double and a home run among his four hits. Calbick scored twice and drove in two runs for the Tigers, totaling eight bases for a slugging percentage of .889 overall. First-year utility player Brent Lindsey of Rhodes continues to pace the Lynx offense going 3-for-7 (.428), with a double, on the weekend against Huntingdon College. Lindsey scored four runs, drove in two, and walked twice. Hendrix and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw and Sewanee did not play.

AARON WILLIAMS OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a first-year right-hander from Covington, La., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 11 through Sunday, February 17.

Williams
picked up his second win in as many outings, tossing 7.0 solid innings and striking out seven while surrendering two hits and one run, in a 5-1 upset win at No. 5 Emory University on Saturday. 

Williams, a product of Mandeville High School, is quickly establishing himself as one of the premier pitchers in a tough starting rotation, combining for a 2-0 record and a 0.75 ERA in his first two collegiate starts. He has struck out 13 batters against just three walks in 12.0 innings of work, while allowing only three hits and one run.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior right-hander Matt Finke of Austin College threw a complete game in his first start of the 2008 season, striking out eight batters while allowing just one earned run and two runs overall on five hits.  Finke pitched seven strong innings to pick up the 3-2 win. Junior left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity picked up where he left off last season, delivering a strong performance to lead the Tigers to the win in the 2008 season opener. Bronson gave up just one run on four hits in the game, striking out five and going the distance for the complete-game victory. Last year, Bronson led the team with a 2.68 ERA and a 5-3 record. He also struck out a team-high 67 batters and opponents hit just .247 against him in 2007. Bronson collected three complete games last season, including a pair of shutouts, and totaled 57.0 innings pitched.
Junior right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes pitched 7.0 innings en route to his first victory of the season, Holt struck out five, walked none and allowed six hits and three runs against Huntingdon College. Holt is now 1-1 on the year. Birmingham-Southern, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw and Sewanee did not play.
 


WEEK 1

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Saturday, Feb. 2nd through Sunday, Feb. 10th)

QUINN SALMON OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-2, 200-pound senior first baseman from Lafayette, La., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, February 2 through Sunday, February 10.

After backing up Luke Morrow at first base the previous three seasons and getting his first chance as a regular starter for the Majors in 2008, Salmon had a breakout weekend, going a combined 7-for-10 at the plate with 12 RBIs, eight runs scored, three home runs (grand slam) and two doubles to help lead Millsaps to a three-game weekend sweep at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic in Jackson. 

Salmon picked up his first career home run on Friday in an 18-9 win over LaGrange in odd fashion, chugging around the bases after the ball stayed in the park to record the rare inside-the-park home run. An inning later, he added to a monster day with a grand slam over the left centerfield wall, followed by a pair of RBI-singles to finish the day 4-for-5 from the plate with a total of nine RBIs.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore shortstop Andy White of Austin College got off to a strong start to the 2008 season, hitting .333 (4-of-12) with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, and four runs batted in as the ‘Roos took on 17th-ranked Texas Lutheran in a three-game set. White knocked in a pair of runs in a 10-0 victory over TLU and followed that up with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate in a 15-7 loss. First-year third baseman Brent Lindsey of Rhodes hit his first collegiate home run as he had a grand slam against LaGrange this weekend. Lindsey finished the game going 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Birmingham-Southern, Hendrix ande Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Saturday, Feb. 2nd through Sunday, Feb. 10th)

TYLER STEED OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year right-hander from McKinney, Texas, and AARON WILLIAMS OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a first-year right-hander from Covington, La., have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Saturday, February 2 through Sunday, February 10.

Steed opened his college career with a strong performance against 17th-ranked Texas Lutheran, pitching a complete game shutout in a 10-0 victory. 

Steed struck out three while walking just one and scattering five hits in the game, and needed just 86 pitches to pick up the win.

Williams i
n his first career collegiate start, helped the Majors to an 8-2 victory over the SCAC preseason favorite Rhodes College at home to complete a 3-0 weekend. 

In 5.0 innings of work, Williams tossed a one-hitter, while scattering six strikeouts against just two walks.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes pitched a solid  7.0 innings,  picking up the loss against University of the Ozarks. Holt gave up just six hits, one earned run while walking one and striking out five. Birmingham-Southern, Hendrix and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not play.
