CO-CHAMPS MILLSAPS AND TRINITY DOMINATE
2006 ALL-TOURNAMENT BASEBALL VOTING

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Rain forced the cancellation of the 2006 SCAC Baseball Tournament final, creating a co-championship between Millsaps College and Trinity University. It is the first time since 1990 – when the league used a round-robin format to determine its champion – that the conference baseball tournament has ended with a split champion. Ironically, the same schools that tied in 1990 are the same that finished as co-champions this year.

Some separation between the two was created in the vote for the 2006 All-Tournament team, however, as Millsaps earned six selections on the team to Trinity’s four. The selections were made by the coaches whose teams participated in the championships this past weekend at Sewanee: University of the South.

With its eight baseball titles, Millsaps equals Centre College for the most all-time CAC/SCAC baseball championships. The Majors have won or shared three of the last four baseball championships. Trinity’s title is its fourth overall and second in the last three years.

The Majors’ outfielder Garner Wetzel was the only unanimous selections to this year’s squad. Wetzel, who was also a unanimous selection last year as a shortstop, and his teammate, pitcher John Fox, were selected to the team for the second consecutive year while Trinity’s second baseman Johnny Baugus is also a two-time selection. He made the team in 2004.
