Weather forces Millsaps and Trinity to share 2006 SCAC Baseball title

SEWANEE, Tenn. -
While playing on a bitter cold, rainy Sunday afternoon on the Cumberland Plateau, the Trinity University and Millsaps College bats were hot. The two teams combined for 28 runs, 32 hits and used 10 pitchers in the process.

Needing two victories over tournament unbeaten Trinity, Millsaps won the contest 18-10 to force
a "winner-take-all" situation later in the day. However, the "if necessary" game was cancelled due to rain and the two top-20 teams were declared co-champions.

Millsaps, which jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after four innings, carried a 9-6 lead into the top of the eighth inning. However, Trinity, with the help of a three-run home run by J.B. Sowyrda, put four runs on the board in the inning to take a one-run lead.

The Majors answered the Tigers in the bottom with nine runs on six hits to take an 18-10 lead and put the game out of reach. Hunter Abrams, in his first pitching appearance of the year, picked up the win in relief.

The three western division teams dominated the tournament by sweeping the opening day three games and placing two teams in Sunday's final.

The baseball title is the fourth for 11th-ranked Trinity and the eighth for Millsaps which ties the Majors with Centre College for the most baseball championships by an CAC/SCAC school.

Trinity receives the SCAC's automatic bid to NCAA tournament as a result of their first place finish in SCAC Western Division regular season. Millsaps, 14th-ranked in the nation, awaits word of an at-large bid.
