SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 16th through Sunday, April 22nd)

BRAD CULLING OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 6-0, 180-pound senior outfielder from Albuquerque, N.M., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 16 through Sunday, April 22.

Culling
led all hitters at the SCAC Divisional Tournament with a .714 (5-7) batting average. He helped power the Pirates to a two-game sweep of the East Division's second seed DePauw University with three runs scored and three runs batted in.

Culling also had the highest slugging percentage (1.571) with a home run, a triple, a double and two singles, and tied for first in on-base percentage (.750) and total bases (11). He was the only player over the weekend to hit for the "tournament cycle."


For the season, Culling is hitting .296 in 37 games with 18 runs and 20 runs driven in. Among his 34 hits, he has 10 doubles, four triples and three home runs.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore catcher Patrick Ray of Austin helped the ’Roos win their series with Centre 2-1 with his stellar performance at the plate, hitting .462 (6-for-13) with a home run, a double, six RBI, and four runs scored. Ray was also 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts, and in the decisive game three victory for the ’Roos he launched a three run homer in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away for Austin College. Senior outfielder Jason Hadley of Millsaps
stretched his hitting streak out to eight games, recorded his team-leading 19th multi-hit game of the season and bumped his team-leading average up to .395 in a 3-0 week for the 22nd-ranked Majors. Hadley batted a sturdy .615 (8-for-13) on the week with 12 total bases, four doubles, two RBIs and two stolen bases while posting a .923 slugging percentage. In a 3-for-4 performance in a 12-1 win over Oglethorpe, Hadley became Millsaps’ all-time career hits leader with 230. He stands one double shy of the single-season record of 19 doubles (tied by Hunter Owen last week), held by Kirk Kinard. Sophomore shortstop J.R. Bizzell of Rhodes went 7-for-11 (.636) on the weekend to help the Lynx get past Trinity in a best 2 out of 3 series to move into the final round of the SCAC Tournament.  Bizzell scored four runs, had two RBI, two triples, a walk and a stolen base. He was a spark plug all weekend, getting on base eight out of the 12 times he came to the plate. Bizzell also led the defense by making incredible play after play and holding down a tough Trinity line up en route to the series win. On the season, despite missing a half dozen games, Bizzell is in the top of the league in many categories. He is 13th in the SCAC in hitting (.377), 12th in on-base percentage (.467), sixth in runs scored (52), seventh in hits (58), eighth in walks (25), third in triples (3) and 10th in stolen bases (10). Senior first baseman Eric Samulski of Trinity led the Tigers with a .500 batting average over the last week, going 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Against eighth-ranked Texas Lutheran, Samulski was 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the SCAC Divisional Playoff series against Rhodes, Samulski was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI in the opening game and 1-for-1 with one RBI in game two before leaving due to injury. His RBI in that game turned out to be the game-winner. For the season, Samulski finished 10-for-37 (.270) at the plate, with five runs and 10 RBI. Centre, DePauw and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Hendrix and Sewanee did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 16th through Sunday, April 22nd)

EVAN BRONSON OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 185-pound sophomore left-hander from Midlothian, Va., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 16 through Sunday, April 22.

Bronson was 2-0 last week earning a win over No. 8 Texas Lutheran and pitching a three-hit shutout in the SCAC Divisional Playoffs against Rhodes. 

Bronson came on with no outs in the ninth inning on Tuesday, inheriting runners on first and second. He proceeded to strike out the side to set up Trinity's victory in the bottom of the ninth. 

Against Rhodes, Bronson tossed a three-hit shutout in game two of the Divisional Playoff, forcing a third and final game to decide that series. He struck out eight batters in the game - the only shutout of the Divisional series - walking just one. 

Bronson finishes the season with a 5-3 record and a team-leading 2.68 ERA. He also led the team with 67 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched, with opponents hitting just .247 against him - the lowest on the team. In 11 appearances - seven starts - he had three complete games and two shutouts, allowing just 17 earned runs and 17 total walks. 


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior left-hander Chris Catalanotto of Rhodes threw another gem for the Lynx on Sunday against Trinity. Arguably the biggest game in the past 20 years for Rhodes baseball occurred this weekend in Sunday's third and deciding game against the Tigers. Catalanotto strolled to the mound and pitched a complete game, working the entire 9.0 innings while surrendering only four hits, two earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts. He kept the Trinity hitters off balance to pick up his sixth victory of the season against just one loss. For the season, Catalanotto has a 2.45 ERA (third in the SCAC) and is tied for seventh in the SCAC with the six wins. Senior right-hander Andy Morrison of Southwestern
threw his eighth complete game of the season on Friday to defeat the #2 seed DePauw University in the first game at the SCAC Divisional Tournament. He allowed just two earned runs as the Pirates pulled out the 3-2 victory. The senior scattered eight hits over nine innings, striking out six and walking three. Morrison only allowed two extra-base hits, a home run and a double as he improved to 8-4 on the year. Senior right-hander Clint Rushing of Austin pitched a complete game in the ’Roos decisive victory in their three game series against Centre, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits as the ’Roos clinched a spot in the SCAC Championships. Rushing didn’t allow a walk while striking out four batters, as he lowered his team-best ERA to 3.73 and tied the school record with his sixth victory. First-year right-hander Bobby Osburn of Millsaps, although he tossed only 1 2/3 innings on the week, recorded pivotal outs that proved to be the difference in the game, picking up his team-leading third save as well as his second win of the year. After the Majors surrendered three runs in the top of the ninth that cut their lead to 10-9 against Belhaven, Osburn came in with two outs and two runners on to strike out the Blazers’ designated hitter to conserve the win. In Game 2 of the SCAC Divisional against Oglethorpe, Osburn tossed the final 1 1/3 innings in a one-run ballgame, scattering two hits, two strikeouts and no runs to pick up the series-clinching win. Centre, DePauw and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Hendrix and Sewanee did not play.
 


WEEK 10

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 9th through Sunday, April 15th)

KYLE RAKES OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 188-pound senior outfielder from Ashland, Ky., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 9 through Sunday, April 15.

Rakes had an almost perfect week for the Colonels, hitting .900 (9-10) in helping Centre to a 3-1 record, including three SCAC wins against Sewanee.

Rakes scored five runs and drove in 12 on the week, including seven in the Colonel's 21-11 win over Sewanee in the first game Saturday.

In that same game, he was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a three-run home run to right field, his first home run of his career. Along with his home run, Rakes added three doubles, a walk and a sacrifice bunt while stealing a base in his only attempt.

Rakes had a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .909 on-base percentage and did not make an error in six chances.

For the season, Rakes is hitting .313 in 31 games with 21 runs and 21 runs driven in. Among his 31 hits, he has eight doubles and a home run.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
First-year infielder Andrew Llano of Oglethorpe had a monster week at the plate hitting .619 (13-21) while knocking in a whopping 14 runs in five games. His hits included two doubles and a home run. Llano started the week against third-ranked Emory, going 3-for-5 including a two-run blast over the left field wall. During the weekend series at DePauw he led the Petrels to a series split and the program's first conference playoff appearance since 2004. Llano had three hits in three out of the four games and knocked in at least two runs in each game including four in game one. For the season, he is leading the Petrels with a .373 BA (12th in the SCAC) and is tied for fourth in the SCAC with 56 hits. His 35 RBI’s lead the team and are good for 10th in the SCAC. Senior outfielder Jason Hadley of Millsaps
went 9-for-20 (.450) from the plate with 10 total bases, seven RBIs, six runs scored and four stolen bases to run his conference-leading total to 23 on the year as the Majors went 5-0 with a 20-4 win over Louisiana College and a 4-0 weekend sweep over SCAC West foe Hendrix College. The senior outfielder not only hit safely in all five games and recorded an RBI, he had three multi-hit games while improving his batting average by 13 points to a .373. Sophomore outfielder Mason Mosby of Rhodes went 10 for 23 (.435) on the week with eight runs scored and six RBI. He also stole three bases on the week, bringing his total to 19 on the season (second in the SCAC ). For the season, Mosby is hitting .423 (third in SCAC), leads the SCAC in triples with seven and is among the leaders in many categories - including slugging percentage (.667 - fourth), on-base percentage (.503 - fifth), runs (57 - third), hits (66 - second), RBIs (45 - fifth) and home runs (5 - fourth). Junior shortstop Eric Reese of DePauw hit .471 (8-17) on the week, which included a 4-for-6 effort in a doubleheader against 10th-ranked Washington (Mo.) as well as another 4-for-6 performance in the first two games of the four-game set against Oglethorpe. He drove in four runs and scored four more. Senior outfielder Ryan Bellomy of Southwestern led the Pirates offense with a .737 on-base percentage this past weekend in four games against rival Trinity University. He batted .500 (5-10) with seven runs scored and drove in two runs - thanks to a two-run home run in Sunday's game. Bellomy was a constant threat on base as he drew eight walks and was hit by a pitch once. He also stole a base and had a slugging percentage of .800. Senior third baseman Blake Holman of Trinity hit .412 (7-17) last week to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 record that included a weekend series split at Southwestern. Holman scored four runs and drove in five more to lead the team in both categories.  He also had three doubles among his seven hits – all of which came in the weekend series. His two-run single in the seventh inning on Sunday to put the Tigers ahead for good in that game. For the season, Holman has raised his batting average to .303 this season, collecting 43 hits in 143 at-bats. He is tied for the team lead with 14 doubles, scoring 18 runs and tallying 21 RBI. Austin, Hendrix and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 9th through Sunday, April 15th)

ANDY MORRISON OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 6-1, 210-pound senior right-hander from Austin, Texas, and BRENT BUFFA OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-0, 200-pound senior right-hander from St. Louis, Mo., have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 9 through Sunday, April 15.

Morrison went the distance for the Pirates in the Friday game against Trinity, shutting out the Tigers in SU's 7-0 win. He did not allow a single runner past second base in nine innings and struck out six while scattering six hits (five of them were singles).

It was Morrison's first complete game shutout of the season and his seventh complete game of the year.

Morrison improved his overall record to 7-4 (tied for third in the SCAC in wins) and lowered his ERA from 4.73 to 4.15 (15th in the SCAC). He has struck out 47 batters this season (seventh in the SCAC) in 73.2 innings of work (third in the SCAC).

Buffa,
in two appearances on the week which included one start, surrendered no runs and only four hits while scattering six strikeouts against only one walk. 

The senior transfer tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 13-0 win over Hendrix in Game 2 of a weekend series in which the Majors earned a weekend sweep - just three days after tossing one inning in relief in a 20-4 win over Louisiana College in which he struck out three. 

Buffa held opponents to a .148 batting average on the week while posting a 1-0 record and improving his ERA to a 2.34 (third in the SCAC). His record on the season now stands at 6-2 (tied for sixth in wins in the SCAC).


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Johnny Karnes of Centre allowed only one earned run (1.08 ERA) over 8.1 innings of work and picked up his second win of the season in a 17-1 win over Sewanee. Karnes threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief against Thomas More Tuesday and then followed that up with his first complete-game effort of his career. The senior hurler threw all seven innings, allowing only six hits and one earned run, while not walking anyone and striking out two. Karnes is now 2-3 for the Colonels this year in 35.1 innings of work and leads the team with 14 appearances. Sophomore right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes pitched a gem against third-ranked Emory on Sunday. Holt tossed 8.0 innings, scattering seven hits while walking three and striking out eight. He allowed just three earned runs in picking up his ninth win on the season (second in SCAC). For the season, Holt is 9-2 with a 2.08 ERA (second in SCAC) and opponents are hitting just .224 against him. Sophomore right-hander David Morefield of DePauw earned the win against 10th-ranked Washington (Mo.) after allowing just one run in six innings. For the week, Morefield pitched 9.2 innings with an ERA of 1.86, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts. Junior right-hander Ryan Poffenroth of Trinity was 1-0 last week, holding an ERA of 1.50 by allowing just one run in six innings pitched. Both appearances this week came against Southwestern, and his win was in game four of the weekend series. Poffenroth came on in relief in that game, allowing one run on one hit in the final 4.1 innings to seal the series split. The one run he gave up was in the ninth when the defense traded that run for a double play. He allowed just three hits in six innings, and while he allowed five total runs, just the final one was earned. For the season, Poffenroth leads the team with five wins, holding a 5-5 overall record and an ERA of 4.03. He has appeared in 20 games this year, recording a team-high 58 strikeouts in 51.1 innings or work. Austin, Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 9

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 2nd through Sunday, April 8th)

CHRIS LUCAS OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a 5-10, 185-pound first-year outfielder from Locust Grove, Ga., and RYAN BELLOMY OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 6-4, 205-pound senior outfielder from Dallas, Texas, have been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played Monday, April 2 through Sunday, April 8.

Lucas continues to heat up for the Petrels and hit a blistering .526 (10-19) in four games last week - including a three-game sweep over rival Sewanee. He scored five runs and had six RBI’s.

Against Georgia rival Piedmont College, Lucas went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. In Friday's first game against Sewanee, he forced extra innings with a 2-out RBI single in the seventh. Lucas continued with two hits in each of the next two games including a 3-RBI game in Saturday's first game to help complete the sweep.

With the hot week, Lucas raised his average 80 points over the week.
For the season, he is batting .239 with three doubles, 12 runs scored and 11 driven in.

Bellomy
led the Pirates to a 3-1 SCAC weekend against the Hendrix College Warriors, batting .533 (8-15).

Bellomy drove in seven runs and scored four while accumulating a slugging percentage of .800. He had two doubles and a triple, all in the Pirates' 7-5 win on Saturday. The senior also walked twice and was hit once, good for an on-base percentage of .611.

For the season, Bellomy is batting .358 with 12 doubles (seventh in the SCAC), 30 runs scored (tied for 13th in the SCAC) and 25 runs driven in. His .500 slugging percentage is tied for 14th in the SCAC.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
First-year outfielder John Reisig of Austin went 6-for-10 (.600) as the 'Roos swept three games from Trinity over the weekend. Reisig scored three runs and drove in three more while also managing to draw four walks to get on base a total of 10 times in the three-game series. He had two hits in each of the three games. Junior first baseman Adam Ford of DePauw hit .429 on the week (6-14) with six runs scored and three RBI as the Tigers swept four games from Centre in SCAC East action. The junior was 4-for-4 in Saturday's first game with four RBI and three doubles. Sophomore catcher Russ Boyd of Millsaps
had a solid outing at the plate in a 2-1 week for the Majors, batting .625 (5-for-8) with six total bases, five runs scored, three RBIs and one double. He also carried a .750 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .727. Sophomore infielder Matt Giza of Hendrix started all four games for the Warriors this week. He went 6-for-14 with one run, two doubles and two RBIs for a batting average of .429. Giza also posted an impressive .571 slugging percentage and .529 on-base percentage. He was walked three times with just three strikeouts, and posted 37 putouts and two assists with just one error for a fielding percentage of .975 from his position at first base. Centre, Rhodes, Sewanee and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, April 2nd through Sunday, April 8th)

JEREMY ALLAND OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-0, 175-pound junior left-hander from Buffalo Grove, Ill., and CORY STEVENS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-2, 185-pound sophomore right-hander from Lewisville, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, April 2 through Sunday, April 8.

Both pitched complete-game, five-hitters and were catalysts in SCAC series sweeps by their respective teams.

Alland tossed a complete-game, extra-inning win over Centre on Friday, allowing just one unearned run while striking out 10 and walking only one in eight innings of work.

Alland improved to 4-1 with the five-hitter.

On the season, Alland has a league-leading ERA of 1.29 ERA and has struck out 43 batters (sixth in the SCAC) in 48.2 innings of work. Opposing hitters are batting .225 against the lefty (fifth in the SCAC).

Stevens
threw a complete game shutout at Trinity in the second game of the weekend series, scattering five hits while whiffing five batters in his seven innings of work as the ’Roos picked up the 7-0 victory. 

It was just the second time this season that Trinity has been blanked.

For the season, Stevens is 1-4 with an ERA of 5.46 and has struck out 30 batters in 31.1 innings of work.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore left-hander Tait Hendrix of Millsaps in two appearances on the week, including one start, tossed a combined six innings while scattering six strikeouts and one earned run. The sophomore hurler held opponents to a .231 batting average in 26 plate appearances while posting a 1.50 ERA on the week. Senior right-hander Andy Morrison of Southwestern started the opening game of the Pirates' series with Hendrix, throwing eight innings and surrendering four earned runs to earn the 6-4 win. Two days later, he worked 1.2 innings in relief to close out the game and hold off the Warriors to earn his second win of the weekend as SU picked up the 7-5 victory. Morrison's final numbers for the week were 9.2 innings pitched and a 3.72 ERA with seven strikeouts and only two extra-base hits allowed. He improved his overall record for the season to 6-4. Sophomore right-hander Daniel Ward of Hendrix made just one appearance on the mound this week, but made it count as he pitched a seven-inning combined 2-0 shutout against Southwestern University. Ward gave up just five hits in 25 at bats, with just one multiple base hit for an opponent's batting average of .200 and an ERA of 0.00. Ward struck out four batters, while walking only one and hitting none, throwing no wild pitches while allowing no sacrifice hits or flies. Centre, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Sewanee and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 8

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 26 through Sunday, April 1st)

RICHARD HURD OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 5-11, 185-pound junior outfielder from Marietta, Ga., and HUNTER OWEN OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-3, 210-pound junior outfielder from Jackson, Miss., have been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 26 through Sunday, April 1.

Hurd
went 13-for-24 (.542) on the week with five home runs, a double, three walks, 10 runs scored and 16 RBI, leading the Lynx offense as they went 5-0 on the week, including a four-game sweep of Eastern Division foe Centre College. His slugging percentage was 1.208 on the week and he had a .593 on-base percentage.

Hurd had two multi home run games on the week, driving in six in each of those contests. 

For the season, Hurd leads the SCAC in batting average (.450), runs (48), hits (58) and total bases (93). In addition, he is second in triples (4) and third in the following; slugging percentage (.721), on-base percentage (.520), home runs (6) and RBIs (49) and is seventh in stolen bases (9).

Owen batted an even .400 (10-for-25) in a 4-2 week for the 11th-ranked Majors, grabbing 24 total bases, 10 hits and nine RBIs off four homeruns and two doubles.

Owen carried a 1.294 slugging percentage and a .529 average in the huge series against SCAC Western Division foe Trinity University - a series that Millsaps gained took three of four games. He blasted all four of his home runs on the week against Trinity.

For the season, Owen is batting .407 (seventh in the SCAC) and slugging .805 (second) with a league-best 51 runs driven in. He has 13 doubles (tied for second in the SCAC) and a league-high 10 home runs. Owen has scored 33 runs (tied for seventh).

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior outfielder Matt Kleine of DePauw hit .406 in eight games (13-32) with eight runs scored and 11 RBI, including seven RBI in Saturday's 13-5 victory over Sewanee (the most by any player in a SCAC game this season). Kleine also tossed a hitless inning of relief. Senior outfielder Brad Culling of Southwestern hit his first two home runs of the season this past weekend, helping power the Pirates to three wins in four games against Austin College. He went 6-for-14 in the series and had two three-RBI games - totaling six for the series. He also scored five runs while recording two multi-hit games. He also had a double, walked twice and was hit by a pitch once for a .529 on-base percentage.
Senior outfielder Tim Ernst of Oglethorpe continued his assault on the OU and SCAC record books. He hit .412 (7-17) including a triple and a double, with six runs, two RBIs and was 6-for-6 in stolen bases. On Friday against Hendrix, Ernst hit the game-tying triple then scored the game-winning run by stealing home. He ended the week on Senior Day against fourth-ranked Emory by going 3-for-5 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. On Saturday, Ernst became just the 14th player in SCAC history to amass 200 hits. He is currently at 204 hits, just six away from moving into the top 10 in SCAC history. This year Ernst has set new school career records for hits, runs scored, games played and stolen bases. For the year he is hitting .325 with 25 runs, 16 RBIs, seven doubles, two triples, and a home run and is 15-for-16 in stolen bases. Sophomore catcher David Foley of Hendrix started both games for the Warriors this week and was 4-for-7 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs for a batting average of .571. Foley was walked once and struck out just twice, and also hit two sacrifice flies and 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts. On the week, he had a slugging percentage of .571 and an on base percentage of .500. As a fielder, Foley had seven putouts and one assist with three errors for a fielding percentage of .727. Foley had an outstanding performance in Saturday’s 6-3 win over Oglethorpe, going 2-for-2 with one run and three RBIs. Senior outfielder Nick Vera of Trinity hit .438 (7-16) over the past week as the Tigers went 2-3 overall. Vera led the team with seven runs and eight RBI in the five games, hitting one double and three home runs. He held an on-base percentage of .524 in the five games, and posted a 1.063 slugging percentage. For the season, Vera leads Trinity with a .436 average, collecting 41 hits in 94 at-bats.  He also leads the team in every other category offensively, including 32 runs, 30 RBI, seven home runs, 11 doubles, and 13 stolen bases. He has also drawn 14 walks and has been hit by pitch 14 times.  His season on-base percentage is .548 and his slugging percentage is .819 overall. Austin, Centre and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 26th through Sunday, April 1st)

CHRIS CATALANOTTO OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 6-0, 180-pound junior left-hander from New Orleans, La., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 26 through Sunday, April 1.

Catalanotto pitched a complete game en route to a 12-1 victory over Centre College on Sunday.

The junior right-hander was one out away from a nine-inning shutout when he surrendered a solo home run - his only run allowed on the week.

Catalanotto pitched 9.0 innings in the key SCAC East showdown, scattering five hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.

On the season, Catalanotto is 4-1 with a 2.76 ERA (sixth in the SCAC). Opposing hitters are batting .231 against the lefty (sixth in the SCAC).


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Brent Buffa of Millsaps improved to 5-2
with a 2.68 ERA in his first season in a Majors' uniform, posting a 0.90 ERA on the week in 10.0 innings of work. Buffa tossed a complete game shutout in an 8-2 Saturday win over Trinity, scattering six Tigers' hits with three strikeouts and one unearned run. Sophomore left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity pitched his second consecutive complete game this weekend, made all the more impressive by the fact that the game was played on both Saturday AND Sunday. Bronson pitched through the first three innings before rains postponed the game until the next day where he promptly picked up where he left off. He held a potent Millsaps offense to just two runs over nine innings, striking out seven batters and giving up just eight hits to hold the Majors to an average of .242 in the game. Bronson's performance pushed his season record to 3-2 and gave him the team lead in ERA with a mark of 2.85. He has given up just 13 earned runs in 41 innings pitched this season, striking out a team-high 53 batters. Opponents are hitting just .264 against him this year. Junior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw allowed two unearned runs and five hits in a 5-2 victory over Sewanee on Saturday. He struck out six and walked two in 7.0 innings of work. First-year right-hander Will Chermak of Austin produced his second consecutive quality outing, giving up only one unearned run on two hits while striking out three in a 3-1 victory over Southwestern on Sunday - the 'Roos only win in the four-game set against the Pirates. First-year right-hander David Hagan of Hendrix made one appearance this week and threw for six innings in earning the win against Oglethorpe. Hagan worked on a no hitter for 5.1 innings and ended the game with just two hits and one earned run for an ERA of 1.50. He walked only three batters and struck out three batters, facing 20 batters in the game with hitters managing just .100 against him.  Hagan also had no wild pitches or balks, hit no batters and allowed no sacrifice flies or hits in the game. Sophomore right-hander Wes Willis of Southwestern picked up his first win of the season, going 6.1 innings against Austin College. He scattered five hits and allowed three runs, two earned. Willis struck out six and walked none in the Pirates' 6-4 victory in Sherman. Centre, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 7

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 19th through Sunday, March 25th)

ERIC MOORE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-2, 235-pound senior first baseman from Bowling Green, Ky.,, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 19 through Sunday, March 25.

Moore hit .474 (9-19) on the week in helping the Colonels go 4-2, including an SCAC four-game sweep over Oglethorpe.

Along with hitting .474, Moore drove in 11 runs, scored five more, walked three times, was hit by a pitch twice and had two sacrifice bunts and two sacrifice flies. He also had two doubles and his first homerun of the season (a three-run shot in Centre's 11-4 win over Oglethorpe on Saturday) and did not make an error in 49 chances.

Moore posted a .737 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage to help Centre complete it's second four-game conference sweep in the last three years.

Moore is currently hitting .446 on the season (second in the SCAC) with 23 RBIs (10th in the SCAC) to lead Centre in both categories.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior outfielder Hunter Owen of Millsaps boosted his season average to .409 with 10 RBIs, four doubles, four runs scored and a stolen base as the Majors won four of five games on the week. Owen went 9-for-21 (.429) on the week and has hit safely in 19 of 23 games played. He currently ranks first in the SCAC in RBIs (42) and homeruns (6), second in slugging percentage (.761) and total bases (67), fourth in doubles (11), fifth in on-base percentage (.509) and seventh in runs scored (27), hits (37), and batting average (.409). First-year outfielder Jordan Robison of Austin put together an outstanding offensive week for the ’Roos, batting .524 (11-for-21) with a home run, five runs scored, and eight runs batted in. Robison’s best performance came on Saturday in the team’s 18-8 win over Hendrix, in which he went 4-for-5 with a three run homer and also scored three runs. Robison also went 2-for-4 with two RBI in a 19-0 win over Hendrix on Friday, 2-for-4 with one RBI in the team’s 8-6 loss on Friday, and 2-for-4 again as the ’Roos took their third game out of four against Hendrix on Sunday. Sophomore infielder Michael Murphy of Southwestern extended his current hitting streak to 11 games during the past week as he batted .524 (11-21) in six games. The sophomore had five multi-hit games, drove in eight runs and scored four, and had five extra-base hits, four doubles and one home run. He also had one sacrifice fly, walked four times and stole his first base of the year. Murphy only struck out once during that span. He currently owns a .318 batting average after starting the week at .250. Senior outfielder Nick Vera of Trinity hit .700 (7-10) over the past week, leading the Tigers to a 2-1 record in non-conference action. Vera scored seven runs and had four RBI in three games, collecting two doubles and a home run to boost his slugging percentage to 1.200 for the week. He was also hit three times to improve his on-base percentage to .769, and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts. For the season, Vera leads the team with an average of .436, posting 34 hits in 78 at-bats. He also has a team-best 25 runs and 22 RBI to go with 60 total bases (.769 slugging). Vera has 10 doubles, two triples, and four home runs, and has stolen 13 bases in 17 attempts. Vera has drawn 14 walks and been hit by a pitch nine times for an on-base percentage of .553 this season. Vera leads the Tigers in ALL of the categories mentioned. Junior outfielder Matt Kleine of DePauw hit .471 to lead the Tigers to a 2-3 record over the course of the week, including a SCAC four-game split with Rhodes. Kleine had eight hits, including two doubles, in 17 at bats and scored three runs and drove in four more. Junior catcher Matt Beesley of Rhodes, who has anchored the defense the past three seasons, continues to produce at the plate as well. Beesley went 7-for-20 on the week (.350), driving in 10 runs and scoring four. He had two home runs and two doubles among his seven hits and is now fourth in the SCAC in both doubles and RBIs. First-year infielder David Hagan of Hendrix had 11 at bats this week and produced six hits with one double, four runs and one RBI. Hagan finished the week with a batting average of .545, a slugging percentage of .636 and an on-base percentage of .583. As a fielder, he had six putouts, eight assists and no errors this week for a fielding percentage of 1.000. Hagan helped turn one double play this week and caught one of two runners stealing. As a pitcher, the sophomore right-hander had one appearance for 7.1 innings, giving up four hits, four runs, two walks and two strikeouts for an ERA of 4.91. First-year outfielder Tom Willis of Sewanee went 16-for-34 (.471) during Sewanee's spring break trip, driving in six runs with two walks, a triple and a home run. Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 19th through Sunday, March 25th)

WILL CHERMAK OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-2, 190-pound first-year right-hander from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 19 through Sunday, March 25.

Chermak was lights out in a 5-1 win over Hendrix College, striking out 14 batters against just two walks while giving up one earned run on six hits. 

After the second inning, Chermak faced more than four batters only once and gave up only one hit – a double in the ninth – after the fourth inning. Ten of Chermak’s strikeouts came between the fifth and ninth innings, including two in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the complete game victory.


On the season, Chermak is 12th in the SCAC with an ERA of 3.40 in 42.1 innings of work (sixth in the SCAC). He has struck out 35 (sixth in the SCAC) and is now 3-2 on the season.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior left-hander Robert Flanagan of Rhodes pitched a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win vs. conference foe DePauw on Sunday. He threw 7.0 innings, surrendering three hits with no walks with six strikeouts. Earlier in the week, Flanagan pitched 3.0 innings of shutout ball giving up just one hit and striking out five as the Lynx beat Illinois Wesleyan, 7-5. His totals for the week were 10.0 innings of work with four hits allowed, no walks and 11 strikeouts. Flanagan has started eight games this season, winning all eight to bring his season record to 8-0. He is leading the SCAC in many categories, including wins and strike outs, and is second in ERA. First-year right-hander Justin Basham of Centre was an unearned run away from posting his second shutout of the season in a 10-1 win over Oglethorpe on Saturday. Basham tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing only five hits and one unearned run, while not walking a batter and striking out two Stormy Petrels. The freshman right-hander is 2-1 on the year and currently boasts a 3.77 ERA in 31.0 innings with 27 strikeouts. Sophomore left-hander Evan Bronson of Trinity had a career-best performance in his only appearance last week, tossing a complete-game five-hit shutout to open the week with a win over Cardinal Stritch.  Bronson struck out a career-high 13 batters in his first career complete game, yielding just two walks. For the season, Bronson is 2-2 with an ERA of 3.09 in seven appearances. He leads the team with 46 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .270 batting average. Junior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs in the Tigers' series-opening, 4-2 win over Rhodes. Alland struck out five batters and walked three to pick up the win. Senior right-hander Josh Curtis of Sewanee was 2-0 in Port Charlotte, pitching Sewanee's only two wins on the trip. He threw 16.0 innings, only walking one batter and allowing just three earned runs. Junior right-hander Brandon Ingram of Millsaps improved to 3-1 on the year in 11.1 innings of work last week. The junior picked up an 11-6 win over the visitors from Illinois Wesleyan on March 20, tossing six innings while scattering seven hits, four runs and a pair of strikeouts. Ingram also had a relief appearance in a 10-inning loss to Southwestern in Game 2 Saturday afternoon, relieving Millsaps starter Tait Hendrix and tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless ball while allowing just three hits. Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 6

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 12th through Sunday, March 18th)

NICK VERA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-1, 205-pound senior outfielder from Clute, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 12 through Sunday, March 18.

Vera hit .412 (7-17) with four extra-base hits over the past week, which included a four-game SCAC sweep of Hendrix College, and the Tigers won all five of their contests. 

Vera had four runs and three RBI to go with three doubles and a triple, giving him 12 total bases and a .706 slugging percentage. He also drew four walks and was hit by pitch three times to bring his on-base percentage to .583 for the week. 

Once on the bases, Vera was a threat to steal, swiping five bases in seven attempts. 

For the season, Vera is second on the team with a .397 batting average, collecting 27 hits in 68 at-bats. Vera also leads the team in doubles (8), triples (2), and home runs (3), as well as leading all players with 18 runs and 18 RBI. His 14 walks are also tops on the team, as are his 11 steals in 15 attempts.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior outfielder John Pacillo of Millsaps continues to have a strong senior campaign, extending his hitting streak to 18 games with a 10-for-23 (.435) week at the plate. Pacillo recorded seven RBIs, five runs scored, three stolen bases and three doubles in a 3-2 week for Millsaps and a conference split with Austin College. Amongst regular starters, Pacillo is batting a team-best .425 and leads the team in hits. Junior outfielder Richard Hurd of Rhodes went 7-for-19 on the week (.368) with seven runs scored and nine more driven in. He added three triples and a double while swiping two bases and walking twice. On the season, Hurd is hitting .438 with an on-base percentage of .495. He has 27 RBI on the season with 30 runs scored. In the first game against Drew on Tuesday he came within six inches of a cycle when he hit the top of the wall in the eighth inning - recording his second triple on the day. Junior outfielder Adam Ford of DePauw went 5-for-15 (.333) in four games with three runs scored and four RBI. Among his five hits, Ford had a double and a home run. He was also 1-0 on the mound for the Tigers. Austin, Centre, Hendrix, Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 12th through Sunday, March 18th)

JUSTIN FROST OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-1, 200-pound junior right-hander from Gilmer, Texas, and DREW BIGNALL OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-1, 200-pound junior right-hander from Wayzata, Minn., have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 12 through Sunday, March 18.

Frost pitched a gem against 13th-ranked Millsaps College, defeating the Majors 5-0 in Jackson in SCAC West Division action on Saturday. Frost tossed a complete game, surrendering just three hits and striking out one to pick up the victory.

Saturday's shutout was the first time Millsaps has been blanked since April 26, 2002 - when Southwestern defeated the Majors, 1-0, in the SCAC Tournament - snapping a 201 game streak in which Jim Page's squad had scored at least one run.


On the season, Frost is tied for the team lead with three wins (against one loss) with a 4.54 ERA in 33.2 innings (seventh in the SCAC).


Bignall
threw a complete-game three-hit shutout to beat Hendrix in his only appearance of the week for the Tigers, helping the team to five straight wins. 

Bignall tied his career-high with nine strikeouts in the seven-inning game, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. 

For the season, Bignall leads the Tigers with an ERA of 1.95 (fourth in the SCAC) in five appearances. He has two complete games in his four starts, with this weekend being his first shutout. Bignall has allowed just six earned runs in 27.2 innings, striking out 26 hitters (tied for sixth in the SCAC) and holding opponents to a .278 batting average (15th in the SCAC).


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior right-hander Jay Hollenbeck of Millsaps had a strong outing for the Majors in a 7-1 win over the visitors from Austin on Sunday to salvage a weekend split. Hollenbeck tossed his first complete game of the season, scattering four hits, a season-high eight strikeouts and no earned runs. On the year, Hollenbeck is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA. He has also not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive innings. Sophomore right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes picked up his sixth and seventh win this week for the Lynx. He earned the win in relief on Tuesday against Drew, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up no hits while walking two and striking out one. On Friday, Holt pitched a complete game, going 9.0 innings against Piedmont College en route to a 4-2 win. He scattered six hits while walking two and recording 10 strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs. On the season Holt is 7-0 and is tied for the SCAC lead in both wins (7) and strikeouts (51) with his teammate Robert Flanagan. Junior left-hander Jeremy Alland of DePauw went 1-0 on the week, tossing 8.0 innings with an ERA of 2.25 in two appearances. Centre, Hendrix, Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 5

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 5th through Sunday, March 11th)

JASON HADLEY OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 5-8, 170-pound senior infielder from Perdido, Ala., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 11.

Hadley
went a combined 9-for-11 (.818) with 10 runs scored, seven RBIs, three doubles and his first home run of the year as the Majors improved to 12-3 after sweeping all three games this past week. 

Hadley has eight multi-hit games through the team's first 15 games, including three last week.

For the season, Hadley is batting .439 (ninth in the SCAC) with an on-base percentage of .543 (sixth in the SCAC). He has 25 hits (tied for seventh) and is tied for the league lead in runs scored with 28. Hadley is also ranked in the top 10 in the league in RBIs (18 - tied for sixth), doubles (9 - tied for third), total bases (37 - ninth) and walks (12 - tied for third).

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior first baseman Eric Moore of Centre hit .500 (10-20) for the week in leading Centre to a 3-3 record. Despite playing with an injured leg the entire week, the senior infielder drove in seven runs, scored three more and walked three times, while not making an error in 43 chances. Of his 10 hits, Moore had four doubles and added a sacrifice fly to post a .700 slugging percentage and .542 on-base percentage for the week. Moore either scored a run or drove in a run in five of the six games, including two runs with an RBI in going 3-for-3 at the plate in the Colonels 6-5 win over Defiance. He returned the next day to go 2-for-4 with a run scored and three driven in as part of the Colonels 9-0 win over Ohio Northern. The senior was then 3-for-5 in a week-ending double header with Ohio Northern. Moore is now hitting .531 (17-32) on the season (second in the SCAC) with a .556 on-base percentage and a .719 slugging percentage in nine games. Senior outfielder Nick Vera of Trinity hit .400 (6-15) over the last week, leading the team with three runs and four RBI. Vera had two doubles and two home runs among his six hits, totaling 14 bases and posting a slugging percentage of .933 for the week. Against Division I Centenary (LA) College, Vera was 3-for-7 with two runs and one RBI, hitting one of his two homers of the week. For the season, Vera is hitting .392 (20-51) with team-leading totals in runs (14) and RBI (15). He holds a slugging percentage of .706 so far this season, collecting five doubles, one triple, and three homers. Sophomore catcher David Foley of Hendrix had six at bats on the week, earning five hits, two runs and one RBI for a batting average of .833. He was also walked twice on the week to earn a .875 on-base percentage. As a catcher, Foley had 11 put outs on 11 chances with no errors and only one passed ball on the week for a fielding percentage of 1.000. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, March 5th through Sunday, March 11th)

JOHN HERBERT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 180-pound junior right-hander from Louisville, Ky, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 5 through Sunday, March 11.

Herbert had an outstanding week on the mound for the Colonels, allowing only one earned run in 14.2 innings, while limiting opponents to only nine hits. He struck out 10 and allowed only one walk, with opponents hitting just .161 against him, while posting a 0.61 ERA for the week.

Herbert was the tough-luck loser in the Colonels' 4-3 loss to Maryville (Tenn.), despite allowing only one earned run in 6.2 innings. If not for five Centre errors, including two in the final inning, Herbert would have earned two wins on the week. Five days later, the junior combined with Jeffrey Williams for the Colonels' second shutout of the season, a 9-0 win over Ohio Northern. Herbert hurled 8.0 shutout innings giving up only two hits, while striking out six and walking only one.

On the season, Herbert is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA (fifth in the SCAC) in 21.2 innings. Opponents are hitting only .216 (sixth in the SCAC) off him as he has struck out 14 and walked only two.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior right-hander Brandon Ingram of Millsaps won a pair of games this past week to improve to 2-1 on the year. Ingram pitched a total of 7 2/3 innings, including 4 2/3 in a win over Huntingdon and three perfect innings in a Game 1 win over in-state foe Tougaloo. The junior allowed only two runs while scattering seven hits and striking out nine. He had a 2.35 ERA on the week to improve his ERA from a 7.94 to a 4.40 for the season. Sophomore right-hander David Hagan of Hendrix pitched 4.0 innings and earned the win in the Warriors' 5-4 come-fron-behind victory over Eureka on Saturday. Hagan faced 15 batters, allowing only five hits and just one earned run while walking only one and striking out three. Hagan's opponents hit .333 against him as he improved to 3-0 with the win. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 4

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 26th through Sunday, March 4th)

DANIEL VANAMAN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 5-11, 195-pound junior first baseman from Cordova, Tenn., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 26 through Sunday, March 4.

Vanaman
led the offense as the Lynx went 5-0 on the week, including a four game conference sweep over Sewanee.

On the week, Vanaman was 10-for-17 (.588) with nine runs scored, nine RBI, four doubles, two walks and two hit-by-pitches - giving him a .667 on-base percentage.

After starting the season 0-for-11, Vanaman. who led the SCAC in hitting last season, has hit .600 since to lift his season average to .457 (tied for seventh in the SCAC) with an on-base percentage of .544 (ninth in the SCAC) and a slugging percentage of .761 (fourth in the SCAC). He has nine doubles (tied for second in the SCAC) and 23 runs driven in (second in the SCAC) with 15 runs scored (tied for eighth in the SCAC).

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior infielder Justin Carter of Millsaps stretched his hitting streak out to nine games this past week with an 8-for-15 (.533) performance at the plate. The senior has six multi-hit games on the year, including two last week, going 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored against Huntingdon and 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored against Emory in the second game of a two-game set. For the season, Carter leads the team in hits (22) and is sporting a .393 batting average. First-year catcher Nathan Skeen of Hendrix scored three runs from seven hits in 13 plate appearances (.538) which included a double, as the Warriors went 2-2 on the week. He also stole two bases and fielded his position perfectly with 10 putouts and six assists on 16 chances. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 26th through Sunday, March 4th)

ANDY HOLT OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 5-10, 160-pound sophomore right-hander from Cordova, Tenn., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 26 through Sunday, March 4.

Holt, who continues to dominate on the mound this season for the Lynx, came in relief on Tuesday with his team trailing cross-town rival Christian Brothers 3-2 and pitched the final 3 1/3 innings - allowing four hits, one earned run, no walks and 4 strikeouts. He picked up the win as the Lynx scored in the bottom of the ninth to take the 5-4 victory.

Holt returned to the mound on Saturday and threw a complete game against SCAC divisional foe Sewanee, picking up the win while surrendering four hits in seven innings with no runs, no walks and eight strikeouts.

On the week, Holt tossed 10.1 innings and allowed eight hits, one earned run and piled up 12 strikeouts while picking up his third and fourth wins of the season.

For the season, Holt is now 4-0 (second in wins in the SCAC) with an ERA of 0.59 (second in the SCAC). Opponents are hitting .217 (seventh in the SCAC) off the right-hander and he has struck out 33 (second in the SCAC).


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior left-hander Travis Bogue of Millsaps becomes the first Majors' starter to reach three wins this season, scattering five hits and two runs while striking out a season-high six Eagles in a 12-2 win over 19th-ranked Emory on Sunday. Bogue also received outstanding help from his infield as Millsaps turned three double plays on the afternoon. The junior is 3-1 on the year with a 3.13 ERA and is tied for the team lead in strikeouts (17). Sophomore right-hander Daniel Ward of Hendrix pitched a seven inning complete game in the first of two games against Central Baptist on Saturday. Ward faced 27 batters and allowed just six hits (all singles) and an unearned run while striking out three. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre did not play.
 


WEEK 3

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 19th through Sunday, Feb. 25th)

DANIEL WARD OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a 6-0, 190-pound sophomore infielder/pitcher from Tacoma, Wash., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 19 through Sunday, February 25.

Ward
went 9-for-11 over the week, hitting two home runs (one of which was a grand slam), four doubles and three singles. Ward drove in 10 runs and scored five as the Warriors won two of three games on the week. He slugged 1.727 with a 0.818 batting average.

For the season, Ward is eighth in the SCAC in batting average (.439), third in slugging percentage (.805), 10th in on-base percentage (.547), second in runs scored (13), tied for first in hits (18), third in RBIs (16), tied for second in home runs (2) and leads the league in doubles (9).

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior outfielder Hunter Owen of Millsaps continues to have a hot bat in the early season, helping Millsaps to a 3-1 week by going a combined 11-for-18 (.611) from the plate with nine RBIs, five runs scored, three doubles, one triple and a homerun. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen bases, including three in a 14-3 win at Piedmont College on Saturday. For the season, Owen is batting a stellar .588 (20-for-34) with 21 RBIs, 14 runs, 40 total bases and four homeruns. He also holds a 1.176 slugging percentage through nine games. Sophomore third baseman Jake Jones of Centre was almost perfect at the plate in helping the Colonels open the season 3-0 on their first weekend of action. Jones was 8-for-10 in the three wins with a double, triple and a two-run homerun in the three games. He also drove in six runs and scored five more along with reaching base on a walk and a hit-by-pitch and stealing two bases. In Centre's opening day 13-7 win over Mount St. Joseph, Jones was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two driven in. He finished only a home run shy of the cycle, having a single, double and triple for his three hits. In the Colonels double header sweep of Earlham, Jones reached base all seven at bats, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two rbi in game one, including his first home run of the season. Game two saw Jones go 2 for 2 at the plate with another run scored and two more RBI. He also walked once and was hit by a pitch in his other two at bats. After three games, Jones is hitting .800 (8-10) with a 1.400 slugging percentage, and an .833 on base percentage. Junior first baseman Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes went 6 for 11 on the week (.545) with two runs scored and nine runs driven in. In the first game against Maryville (Tenn.), Vanaman went 2 for 4 with six RBI, with four of those runs scoring on his fourth inning grand slam. He is hitting .380 for the season with a slugging percentage of .690. Sophomore infielder/catcher Steven Ramos of Trinity hit .520 (13-25) last week to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 record, which included the Desert Classic Tournament Championship. He led the team in both hits (13) and runs (8) over the past six games, as well as stealing three bases in four attempts. Ramos is currently on a five-game hitting streak in which he has had multiple hits in all five games of the Desert Classic Tournament. For the season, Ramos is leading the team with a .545 (18-33) batting average, and is second on the team in both runs (10) and steals (3). Senior outfielder Ryan Bellomy of Southwestern batted .429 (6-14) during the past week as the Pirates posted a 2-2 record. He had at least one hit in each of the team’s games, including two multi-hit games. Against McMurry, Bellomy drove in a pair of runs and scored one. Then, in a Sunday doubleheader against the University of Dallas, the senior outfielder was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBI. He also hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast that gave the Pirates an 8-4 lead in what was eventually an 8-6 victory. Bellomy also recorded one stolen base and a sacrifice fly during the week. During the week, he improved his season batting average from .286 to .343. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 19th through Sunday, Feb. 25th)

JUSTIN BASHAM OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a first-year, 6-2, 220-pound right-hander from Bowling Green, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 19 through Sunday, February 25.

Basham posted a complete-game seventh-inning shutout in his first career outing for the Colonels en route to a 9-0 win over Earlham College.

Basham allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out 11 Quakers. The freshman hurler retired 12 hitters straight at one time and did not allow a runner to reach third base the entire game. Basham also struck out at least one hitter six of the seven innings and at least two hitters four different innings, while also striking out the side in the third inning.

The shutout marks only the second shutout by a Centre pitcher since the 2001 season.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior right-hander Brian Oates of Trinity earned the victory in the first game of the week last Tuesday, striking out seven hitters in four innings of work, and not allowing a run. In fact, Oates didn't allow a runner past second base in his four innings. That game has been the only appearance so far for Oates, who was 4-0 with an ERA of 1.93 last year, striking out 39 hitters in 37.1 innings pitched. Sophomore right-hander Wheeler Gnat of Hendrix pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing only two hits and no runs. Gnat walked only two batters and recorded eight strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Andy Holt of Rhodes tossed seven innings in Friday's 5-3 victory over Blackburn College. Holt surrendered five hits, one earned run and walked two while striking out nine. For the season, Holt is 2-0 with one save and an ERA of 0.45. Senior right-hander Brent Buffa of Millsaps has been nothing but impressive in his first year in a Millsaps uniform after transferring from Washington (Mo.) University. Buffa pitched the ninth inning in a 16-15 win over Belhaven, allowing one hit and no runs for the win. In the second game of a two-game series against LaGrange on Friday, Buffa tossed his and the Majors’ first complete game of the season, surrendering nine hits and allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth while striking out four. On the early season, Buffa is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA. Senior right-hander Andy Morrison of Southwestern, in his third appearance of the year, threw six innings in relief on three days rest to pick up his third win of the year. He worked the final six innings of the Pirates’ win over McMurry University on Wednesday, overcoming four defensive errors behind him, to strike out seven batters. He gave up eight hits and seven runs, however, only two of the runs were earned. He lowered his season ERA from 3.38 to 3.27. Austin, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 2

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 12th through Sunday, Feb. 18th)

NATHAN SKEEN OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a 5-8, 160-pound first-year catcher from White Oak, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 12 through Sunday, February 18.

Skeen was Mr. Clutch all weekend for Hendrix as the Warriors posted victories over two SCAC foes - Rhodes and Sewanee.

Skeen had six hits in 11 trips to the plate (.545) and knocked in the winning run in the 10th inning in Hendrix's 6-5 win against Rhodes on Friday, and on Sunday, knocked in the winning run in the ninth inning against Sewanee.

Of Skeen's six hits, four were doubles and the first-year catcher also scored a run and drove in five more. He had a slugging percentage of .909 and an on-base percentage of .615.

As a catcher, Skeen had 21 put outs on the week with two assists and no errors for a fielding percentage of 1.000.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Junior outfielder Hunter Owen of Millsaps
had another impressive week in helping the Majors to a 2-1 week. Owen went 6-for-10 (.600) on the week with seven RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles and a HR, including a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Millsaps to an 8-7 come-from-behind win over Mississippi College on Tuesday. The junior already has four multi-hit games in five tries. Junior first baseman Daniel Vanaman of Rhodes led the Lynx offense this past weekend. On Saturday against Hendrix, he went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a triple with one run scored and two driven in. On Sunday against Millsaps, Vanaman went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, three RBI and two doubles. For the week, Vanaman's slugging percentage was 1.22. Senior outfielder Jamie Herrmann of Southwestern went 8-for-15 at the plate in five games this past week for a .533 batting average. He scored four runs and drove in three for the Pirates as the team posted a 3-2 record for the week. In Saturday’s win over Concordia University-Austin, Herrmann went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning for the come from behind win. He raised his season average from .222 to .417 during the week. Herrmann was also 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts. Senior outfielder Nick Vera of Trinity led the Tigers with seven runs and 12 total bases over the opening weekend, as Trinity went 1-2 to start the season. Vera hit .500 (5-10) with two doubles, a triple, and a home run, as well as drawing three walks and stealing a pair of bases. In the season opener on Saturday, Vera was just a single away from hitting for the cycle, scoring four runs in the game. Last season, Vera led the Tigers with a .394 batting average and 35 steals in 39 attempts. He also finished with team-best totals in both runs (57) and total bases (100). Austin and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw and Sewanee did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 12th through Sunday, Feb. 18th)

ROBERT FLANAGAN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior left-hander from Shreveport, La., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 12 through Sunday, February 18. It is the second consecutive week he has won the award.

Flanagan
pitched a gem against 13th-ranked Millsaps on Sunday as the Lynx upset the Majors 8-5.

He worked 7.2 innings, giving up just two hits and no earned runs while allowing just a walk and striking out seven to earn his third win of the season.

On the season, Flanagan is now 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
First-year right-hander John Hale of Oglethorpe continued his dominance with a gutsy 8+ innings of work in the Stormy Petrels' 1-0 victory over in-state rival Piedmont College. Hale scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five in leading OU to its fourth straight win to start the season. For the year, Hale has yet to allow a run in 14.0 innings pitched and stands at 2-0 with a save. Sophomore right-hander Wheeler Gnat of Hendrix made two relief appearance at the mound this week for the Warriors, pitching 5.1 innings while picking up a win and a no decision. Gnat faced 19 batters on the week and gave up no runs, four hits, and one walk with four strikeouts for an ERA of 0.00.  Batters who faced Gnat this week had a .211 batting average against him. With Hendrix trailing, he came in during the seventh inning in Saturday’s game against Rhodes and was credited with the win. Senior right-hander Andy Morrison of Southwestern
threw two complete games this past week, earning victories in both. Against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, he went nine innings in SU’s 7-6 win over the Crusaders. The senior allowed 12 hits, 10 of which were singles, and five earned runs while striking out six. Four days later, Morrison went seven innings for the 4-3 win over Concordia.  He allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits and struck out six. His ERA for the week was 3.38. Austin, Millsaps and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw and Sewanee.
 


WEEK 1

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Saturday, Feb. 3rd through Sunday, Feb. 11th)

HUNTER OWEN OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-3, 210-pound junior outfielder from Jackson, Miss., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, February 3 through Sunday, February 11.

Owen
blasted two long balls and crossed the plate three times with five runs driven in en route to a 2-for-3 afternoon as the Majors pasted East Texas Baptist 15-1 on Friday. The day before, he was 1-for-3 from the plate with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored in a 7-2 Majors win. 

In the early going, Owen is batting an even .500 (3-for-6) and has nine total bases with five RBI and five runs scored as well as a 1.500 slugging percentage.

Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore right fielder Mason Mosby from Rhodes College
hit .571 for the week with a .769 OBP. He was 4 for 7 with two triples, three runs scored, three RBI, five walks and was 3 for 3 in stolen base attempts. First-year infielder J.J. Rizzo of Oglethorpe went 7 for 12 (.583) in the Petrels first three games, leading to the team to a perfect 3-0 start to the 2007 season. Rizzo scored two runs and knocked in three runs. First-year outfielder Nathan Hill of Hendrix has played and started at right field in all six of the Warriors’ games thus far, helping the team to a 3-2-1 record. Hill has been to the plate 22 times and has scored four runs off of nine hits, with eight singles and one double, for two RBI’s and a batting average of .409. He also has a slugging percentage of .455, an on base percentage of .440 and is perfect in the field, handling his 12 chances perfectly. Austin and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw, Sewanee and Trinity did not play.

SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week
(For games played Saturday, Feb. 3rd through Sunday, Feb. 11th)

ROBERT FLANAGAN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior left-hander from Shreveport, La., and JOHN HALE OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a first-year right-hander from Atlanta, Ga., have been selected the SCAC Baseball Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week for games played from Saturday, February 3 through Sunday, February 11.

Flanagan
went 2-0 on the week, earning wins against University of the Ozarks and Huntingdon. 

Flanagan pitched 5.0 innings against Ozarks and 7.0 against Huntingdon picking up the win in each game. On the week he pitched 12.0 innings, yielding eight hits and two earned runs while walking just two and striking out 17.

He posted a 1.50 ERA while holding opposing batters to just a .190 average.

Hale
went 1-0 with a save as the Petrels posted three wins in as many tries to start the season.

Hale pitched 6.0 innings, allowing no runs and just one hit and a walk as opponents managed only a .048 batting average.

Against LaGrange. he picked up win in relief with 4.0 almost perfect innings. The freshman walked the first batter he faced then retired twelve in a row. Against Maryville, Hale pitched the final two innings to record his first save in the Petrels' 1-0 victory.


Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore right-hander Wheeler Gnat of Hendrix appeared in three games, earning one win and one save with an ERA of 2.45. Gnat pitched in 7.1 innings, allowing only five hits, three runs - two of which were earned. Gnat also recorded three strikeouts and four walks, and opponents have a batting average of .185 against him. Junior leftt-hander Travis Bogue of Millsaps
retired the first four batters he faced, struck out five and only surrendered two hits in four innings of work in his and the Majors’ first game of 2007 – a 15-1 thrashing of East Texas Baptist University. First-year right-hander Will Chermak of Austin picked up a victory in his collegiate debut, a 3-2 extra innings victory over the University of Dallas on Sunday. Chermak pitched seven strong innings, scattering eight hits and giving up two runs while whiffing four batters. Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre, DePauw, Sewanee and Trinity did not play.
