article MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Trinity University's baseball team stayed alive in a best-of-three SCAC Divisional Playoff series with a 9-0 shutout win over Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon. Trinity (19-21) got a stellar performance from sophomore left-hander Evan Bronson, who tossed a three-hit shutout to improve to 5-3 on the season. Bronson struck out eight and walked just one in the game, propelling the Tigers to a third and deciding game tomorrow against the Lynx. The Tigers scored once in the second to take an early lead, then took advantage of a leadoff walk in the second to score two more runs - thanks to a long home run to left field by Nick Vera, his eighth of the year. Trinity then added to the lead with a run in the fifth, followed by another two-run homer in the sixth. That homer came off the bat of Evan Jones - his second this season - and was hit over 400 feet over the fence in right-center field. The Tigers added three more runs in the eighth to reach the final score. Jordan Pennington and Ricky Welch both had multi-hit games for the Tigers, with Welch leading the team with four hits in this tournament. Welch also scored a pair of runs, while Bobby Zabor recorded two RBI. Daniel Vanaman finished with two of the three hits in the game for Rhodes. Andy Holt (9-3) took the loss for Rhodes, allowing eight runs - seven earned - on 10 hits through 7.1 innings. Trinity and Rhodes will play for the right to compete at next weekend's SCAC Championships tournament in Georgetown, Texas. The winner of tomorrow's game, which starts at 11:00 a.m., will advance to next weekend's action. |
