Junior right-hander Cory Stevens of Austin College tossed a complete-game
eight-hit shutout and the fourth-seeded Kangaroos out of the SCAC West upset
the top-seed from the East, DePauw University, 7-0 on Friday evening at
Millington USA Field. Stevens (5-5), who entered the contest with an ERA of 8.77, stymied the DePauw bats all night long, striking out 10 in his nine innings of work. It was the first time that 14th-ranked DePauw had been shut out all season. Scooter Merritt, Bennett Herrick and Patrick Ray all had three hits for Austin College, which piled up 16 hits for the game .After just two 16+ hit games in the teams' first 36 games, the 'Roos have now had three such games the last four times they've taken the field. Kyle Thompson was the only DePauw player with multiple hits. John Tschantz (6-3), who led the SCAC in ERA heading into the contest, suffered the loss after allowing 13 hits and six runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings of work. He did strike out seven. |
