Box Score

College Sports Information Director MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Junior Andy Holt tossed five solid innings on the hill for Rhodes as the Lynx took a 5-0 cushion through the first four innings but it was Hunter Abrams and Tony Malaschak who came scampering home on an errant throw from catcher Matt Beesley in the bottom of the ninth that allowed Millsaps to complete a wild, 6-5 come-from behind win to force a decisive Game 3 on Sunday at Millington's USA Stadium. Just as they did the previous day, Rhodes plated the opening runs of the game in its half of the first to take an early lead. Serving as the visiting team for Game 2, the Lynx scored two runs behind an RBI-double from freshman Brent Lindsey and an RBI-single from Mason Mosby to knock Millsaps starter Aaron Williams on his heels before getting out of the inning with the bases juiced. Holt backed up an impressive outing from Robert Flanagan a day ago, holding the Majors to just one hit through the first four innings and carrying a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before running into trouble. Millsaps (25-16) scored its first runs of the game in that inning, using a leadoff single from freshman Will Hawkins, followed by a single from Billy Murphy a few batters later. Hawkins, however, was caught stealing second leaving Murphy at first with two outs before Hunter Abrams sent a line drive over the leftfield wall to cut the gap to 5-2. Travis Bogue (8-3) relieved Williams to start the sixth for the Majors and ran into little trouble in his four innings. Bogue, Sunday's scheduled pitcher if necessary, was in a groove on the bump, retiring 11 of the 13 batters he faced and striking out two to allow the Millsaps offense to steadily climb back into contention. Millsaps added a single run in the sixth off an RBI-groundout from Russ Boyd and a single run in the eighth off an RBI-double from Hawkins to draw within 5-4 before setting up the thrilling ninth inning finish. Freshman Taylor Babich, who entered in the eighth to relieve Charles Simmons, struck out the only batter he faced before his arrival in the ninth. Babich forced two of the first three batters to go down on a groundout and a strikeout until Millsaps managed to run the bases loaded with their backs against the wall and senior Derrik Boland up to bat. Boland fell behind in the count 1-2 but managed to run the count full two pitches later when the game-changing play happened. Beesley caught the called ball high from the pitcher Babich and caught Millsaps' Malaschak in between second and third but sailed his throw into centerfield that allowed both Abrams and 'Schak to score for the winning runs. The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the SCAC Baseball Tournament in Danville, Ky., next weekend. Sunday's game time is TBA. |
