SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 18th through Sunday, Feb. 24th)

KOLA ALADE OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-3, 180-pound sophomore guard from Plano, Texas and AHMAD KAREEM SHAHEED OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a 6-6, 230-pound senior post from Atlanta, Ga., have been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 18 through Sunday, February 24.

Alade averaged 24.5 points over the weekend, including a game-high 25 in a 69-64 win over Southwestern - a victory that gave the ‘Roos the fourth seed from the Western Division and the final berth into the SCAC Tournament. 

Alade, who hit 7-of-10 from three-point range over the weekend, shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line and hit 47.1 percent overall from the field. He added 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game over the course of the weekend.

For the season, Alade is averaging 18.2 points per game (third in the SCAC) and is shooting 81.2 percent from the charity stripe (sixth in the SCAC).


Shaheed averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in leading Oglethorpe to a 1-1 weekend, and more importantly, the second seed in the SCAC East for the upcoming conference basketball tournament.

Shaheed had 12 points and five rebounds in the Petrels' narrow 65-59 loss to second-ranked Centre and then followed with a season-high 29 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's 86-80 double-overtime win against DePauw.

For the week, Shaheed shot 60.0 percent (15-25) from the field and 78.6 percent (11-14) from the foul line.

Currently, Shaheed is 17th in the SCAC in scoring (12.9 points per game) and sixth in rebounding (7.4 boards per game). He leads the SCAC in field goal percentage (54.3 percent) and is eighth in blocked shots (0.84 per game). He is just 11 rebounds from becoming the seventh player in league history to record 700+ rebounds for a career.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:

Sophomore forward Danny Noll of Centre
averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in helping Centre finish off a perfect SCAC season with two wins. In the Colonels 65-59 win over Oglethorpe, Noll scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Two days later, the sophomore forward posted team-highs in both points (15) and rebounds (8), while adding three assists, two blocks and a steal in 24 minutes of action. Noll finished the regular season averaging 12.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. First-year forward Luke Caldarera of Trinity led the Tigers with 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last weekend, pushing the team to a pair of SCAC road wins. Caldarera hit 10 of 16 from the field and 3 of 5 three-pointers in the games. For the season, Caldarera is fourth on the team in scoring with 7.8 points per game and third in rebounding with 5.1 boards per game. He is shooting 51.4% (75-148) from the field and 55.6% (5-9) from three-point range. Senior forward Edrick Montgomery of Millsaps fell two rebounds shy of his 25th career double-double in a 23-point home win over Hendrix, scoring 14 points and adding eight rebounds (five offensive) in just 22 minutes of action. Montgomery went 7-for-12 from the floor and also picked up a block to help Millsaps to a perfect 14-0 record at home and a #1 West seed in the upcoming SCAC Tournament. Senior center Stephen Schott of DePauw averaged 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game as the Tigers split SCAC games over the weekend against Sewanee and Oglethorpe. Schott hit on 53.8 percent of his shots from the field (14-26). Birmingham-Southern, Colorado College, Hendrix, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 13

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 11th through Sunday, Feb. 17th)

THOMAS BRITT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 5-11, 175-pound senior guard from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 11 through Sunday, February 17.

Britt scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds in helping the third-ranked Colonels defeat DePauw 69-66 and clinch the regular-season SCAC Championship in the team's only game of the week. It was Centre's 21st consecutive win - breaking the old conference mark of 20 consecutive wins set by Rhodes College during the 1991-92 season.

Britt hit eight of his 10 shot attempts, including three of his five three-point shots and all three of his free throw attempts in 34 minutes of action. The senior also had a block and a steal in the road victory.

Britt, who is just 68 points of scoring 1,000 points for his career, leads Centre at 15.9 points per game (seventh in the SCAC) and has now scored 20 or more points six times while scoring in double figures in all but one game.

In addition, Britt leads the conference in field goal percentage (54.3%), free throw percentage (89.8%) and three-point field goal percentage (50.5%). No player in SCAC history has led the league in all three categories in the same season.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:

Junior guard Cory Smith of Rhodes led the Lynx to a weekend sweep over Sewanee and Oglethorpe. It was the first time all season Rhodes has had back-to-back conference wins. The victory over Sewanee clinched a conference tournament berth for the Lynx. Smith had six points on the night, drawing constant pressure from the Sewanee defense. Despite his low scoring output his presence was still felt as he grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a season-high five assists in the win. On Sunday afternoon, Smith netted 27 points going 8-for-17 from the field. His 11-for-11 from the free throw line (including four in the final minute) helped seal the victory for the Lynx. On the weekend, Smith averaged 16.5 points per game to go along with 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College filled up the stat sheet against Colorado College in a much-needed 58-47 win over the Tigers, keeping hopes alive for a berth into the SCAC tournament. Alade scored 15 points to lead all scorers and added eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block. Senior guard Lorenzo Bailey of Millsaps, in a weekend sweep on the road at Southwestern and Trinity, threw together a pair of solid games, averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals to help Millsaps hit the 20-win mark for just the sixth time in school history. Bailey shot a combined 45 percent from the floor during the trip, including knocking down 6-of-13 3-pointers, en route to his 12th double figure scoring game in the last 13 tries. Bailey, who already owns a pair of career 3-point records at Millsaps in attempts and makes, currently ranks second in the SCAC in threes made this season with 70. Junior forward Ben Pursell of Sewanee had two double-doubles over the weekend, averaging 17.0 points and 14.5 rebounds for the Tigers. He is currently third in the SCAC in double-doubles this season with eight. Pursell also had three steals on the weekend. Sophomore guard Daniel Hudson of Birmingham-Southern averaged 17 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists this week leading BSC to a 1-1 week. He was 8-of-14 from three-point range for 57 percent and was 11-of-24 for 45 percent on field goals. Hudson scored 14 points that included 4-of-6 from three-point range and 5-of-10 on field goals in BSC’s win over Oglethorpe. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out six assists. On Sunday, Hudson led the Panthers with 20 points with three rebounds against Sewanee. He was 4-of-8 from three-point range and made 6-of-14 field goals. First-year forward Todd Ward of Oglethorpe averaged 21.0 points and five rebounds per game as the Petrels suffered two road losses this past weekend. He had a game and career-high 30 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds in the 89-83 loss to Rhodes. Senior center Stephen Schott of DePauw had 19 points and five rebounds in the Tigers' 69-66 loss to third-ranked Cente. He hit on 6 of 13 shots from the field and was also 7 of 8 from the foul line. Sophomore guard Cal Rose of Hendrix drained five 3-pointers in the Warrior’s 70-65 win over Trinity on Friday night. All of his made shots came from behind the arc. Rose was 5-of-10 from long range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a team-high two steals. Junior forward Jonathan Lewis of Trinity led the Tigers in scoring last weekend, averaging 15.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in two games. Lewis connected on 13-22 (59.1%) from the field and 2-4 (50%) from three-point range. He scored a career-high 13 points on Friday, then bested that total with a game-high 18 points on Sunday afternoon. For the season, Lewis is sixth on the team in scoring with 6.2 points/game, and is shooting 43.6% (48-110) from the field. He has hit 9-28 (32.1%) of his three-point shots this season. Colorado College and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
 


WEEK 12

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 4th through Sunday, Feb. 10th)

STEPHEN SCHOTT OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-6, 230-pound senior forward from Indianapolis, Ind., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 4through Sunday, February 10.

Schott
averaged 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as the Tigers picked up home wins against Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern over the weekend.

Schott, who averaged just 26.5 minutes per game in the two games, hit on 68.2 percent of his shots from the field (15-22) and scored the second-most points of his career with a 28-point effort against BSC. He was also 17 of 20 (85.0%) from the free-throw line.

For the season, Schott is averaging 14.0 points (14th in the SCAC) and 7.9 rebounds (fifth in the SCAC) per game. He is leading the league in field goal percentage at 54.5%.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior forward Edrick Montgomery of Millsaps averaged 16.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists in limited time on the court In a weekend sweep for the Majors at home over Colorado College and Austin College. Averaging just 23.0 minutes-per-game in two lopsided victories and recording his ninth double-double of the year, the senior shot an unprecedented 16-of-18 from the floor for 89 percent, including knocking down 10-of-10 attempts on Sunday in a 103-67 win over the ‘Roos. At 10-for-10, Montgomery tied the second best field goal shooting game in SCAC history behind Andrew Tulowitsky (11-for-11 in '07) of Oglethorpe and Jonathan Jarrett of Sewanee (10-for-10 in 2000). His four blocks kept him at second in the league with 44 and gave him 100 for his three-year career, just two behind Torrance Shelton for third all-time in Millsaps history. Sophomore forward Danny Noll of Centre had a big weekend in helping the Colonels win two conference home games and in the process tie the SCAC mark for most consecutive wins. Noll averaged 18.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two wins to help Centre keep three different winning streaks alive. In the 63-46 win over Birmingham Southern, Noll scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Two days later, the sophomore forward posted his second career double-double with a career-high 23 points, including 21 in the first half, and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes in an 85-63 win over Rhodes. Noll hit 14 of his 28 (50.0%) shot attempts on the weekend, including five of 11 from the three-point arc and three of three from the charity stripe. He is currently averaging 12.1 points per game overall and 13.4 points per game in league games. First-year guard Alex Richey of Oglethorpe averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game - propelling the Stormy Petrels to two victories over the week. He was 10 of 18 from the field (55.6%), which included 5 of 9 from long range. Senior guard Barrett Koch of Trinity averaged 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game over the weekend, leading Trinity to a pair of wins against Southwestern and Dallas. Koch hit 4 of 8 from the field and 8 of 11 from the line for the two games, also connecting on both of his free throw attempts. In Friday’s 53-52 win over Southwestern, Koch scored just five points, but his final two turned out to be the difference in the game. Koch nailed a pair of free throws with 1:11 to play that gave Trinity the one-point lead, which turned out to be the final points in the game by either team. On Saturday, Koch scored a career-high 13 points and tied his career-best with eight rebounds against Dallas. He hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 62 seconds and scored eight of his 13 points in the final 4:08 of the game. For the season, Koch is averaging 4.6 points/game and 3.0 rebounds/game this season, connecting 43.9% (29-66) of his field goals and 70.8% (34-48) of his free throws. Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College had a big game for the ‘Roos as they knocked off Hendrix on the road, scoring 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 11-of-14 shooting at the charity stripe. Alade also added seven rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal in the win. For the weekend, Alade shot 52.9 percent from the field and averaged 17 points per game. Junior forward Ben Pursell of Sewanee played in two games this week and averaged 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. In Saturday's loss to Oglethorpe, Pursell logged 23 points and pulled down his 500th career rebound, becoming the SCAC's 36th player to hit the mark. Currently, Pursell is second in the SCAC in rebounding and fifth in scoring. Junior forward David Foley of Hendrix set the pace in the Warriors’ big win over Colorado College on Sunday. Foley’s 18 points and 10 rebounds helped the team bounce back from a tough loss to Austin College on Friday. Foley also posted his first double-double of the season on Sunday afternoon. The 6-5, 200 pound forward also tallied 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field against the Kangaroos on Friday. Birmingham-Southern, Colorado College, Rhodes and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 11

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Jan. 28th through Sunday, Feb. 3rd)

EDRICK MONTGOMERY OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-6, 220-pound senior forward from Pearl, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 28 through Sunday, February 3.

Montgomery, after averaging a double-double on the road last weekend to earn a spot on D3hoops.com’s National Team of the Week, continued his dominance on the court at home this weekend, averaging 30.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in a sweep over Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern. 

Montgomery has really stepped his game up the previous two weeks from the floor and the charity stripe, posting three 30-point games along with three double-doubles and 12 blocks. 

The senior knocked down a career-high 11 of 12 attempts from the free throw line en route to 31 points and 15 boards in a 93-72 win Friday over Rhodes and hit 6 of 7 from the stripe on Sunday en route to 30 points and 13 boards in an overtime win against the Panthers. 

Montgomery has climbed all the way into second in the SCAC in blocks (2.11 per game), third in rebounds (9.2 per game) and sixth in the league in scoring (16.1 per game).

In just three seasons of work for Millsaps, he is now just 53 rebounds away from becoming the fifth player in league history to amass 700 career rebounds.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year forward Todd Ward of Oglethorpe averaged a double-double last weekend - 17.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game - as the Petrels went on the road and swept a pair of SCAC games over Austin College and Colorado College. Ward hit on 14 of 27 shots from the field (51.9%) from the field and also averaged 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Senior guard Matt Nestheide of Centre averaged 16.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in helping the Colonels to a pair of SCAC road wins. In Friday's 78-69 overtime win over Trinity, Nestheide scored a season-high 23 points with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. After hitting a lay-up and being fouled with 0:20 left to play, the senior guard knocked down the free throw to send the game to overtime, where Centre would pull away for the nine-point win. One day later, Nestheide scored nine points and had three assists in a 59-49 win over Southwestern. He is currently third on the team in points per game with 12.7 and leads the team with 4.1 assists per game. Senior guard Ryan Wertz of DePauw matched a career-high with 21 points in Saturday's 70-68 win at Trinity, which included nailing 5 of 7 three-point attempts. For the weekend, Wertz averaged 13.5 points per game and shot 60.0 percent (9-15) from the field. He hit on 53.8 percent (7-13) of his attempts from three-point range. Junior guard Cory Smith of Rhodes led the Lynx to a 1-1 record over the weekend. He scored 21 points, had four rebounds and two assists in the loss to Millsaps on Friday night. On Sunday against Hendrix, Smith scored 21 points with three rebounds and an assist in the victory. On the weekend, Smith scored 42 points (21.0 per game), had seven rebounds (3.5 per game), three assists and three steals. He shot 62.5% from the field (10-16) and 75% from the free throw line (21-28). In the loss to Millsaps, Smith had another thunderous dunk and then four more against Hendrix. Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College put up some big numbers as the ‘Roos split their weekend series with Oglethorpe and Sewanee over the weekend, averaging 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. Alade scored 26 as the ‘Roos fell 71-69 to Oglethorpe, with 18 of his points coming in the second half. He followed that up by hitting what turned out to be the game-winning three-pointer against Sewanee in a 54-53 victory. First-year forward Roger Williams of Birmingham-Southern was the team's leading scorer in three games this week, averaging 15.7 points and 6.0 rebounds with two assists and three steals. He was 19-of-30 from the field for a 63.3 percent during the three-game stretch. Williams became the first Panther this season to post a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds against LaGrange College on Tuesday. He scored 16 points and had five rebounds against Hendrix on Friday and chipped in 13 points with three rebounds in an overtime loss at Millsaps on Sunday. Junior forward Charles Houston of Trinity continued his hot scoring streak over the weekend, though the Tigers suffered a pair of losses to the SCAC East Division’s top two teams. Houston averaged 16 points per game over the weekend, hitting 11 of 18 (61.1%) from the field and 7 of 11 (63.6%) from the line. He also averaged 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in the two SCAC games. For the season, Houston leads the team in rebounding with 7.0 rebounds per game, and is third on the team in scoring at 9.8 points and game. He is also second on the team with a 45.3% shooting percentage, hitting 72 of 159 from the field. Colorado College, Hendrix, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 10

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Jan. 21st through Sunday, Jan. 27th)

THOMAS BRITT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 5-11, 175-pound senior guard from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 21 through Sunday, January 27.

Britt hit the biggest shot of the weekend, and maybe of his career, in Friday night's marquee SCAC match-up between 14th-ranked Centre and 18th-ranked Millsaps, which was heard live nationwide via D3hoops.com.

Trailing 75-72, Britt found a way to get an off-balance three-point shot off from the top of the key and nailed it with 0:00.3 second on the clock to force overtime.

From that point, it was all Britt and the Colonels. After scoring only three points in the first half, the senior guard had eight of his game-high 31 points in the extra period and Centre cruised to the 90-80 victory. Britt was seven of 14 from the field, including seven of 12 from the three-point line and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. He also added two rebounds and two assists in 35 minutes of action.

Two days later, Britt battled foul trouble for much of the game and was only able to get three shots off, but still managed to score 10 points, hitting all eight of his free throws, including six in the final two minutes to seal a 69-59 win over Hendrix.

For the weekend, Britt averaged 20.5 points per game while shooting an impressive 53.8 percent (7-13) from three-point range. He was close to automatic from the foul stripe - nailing 18 of 19 attempts (94.7%).

For the season, Britt is averaging a team-best 16.1 points (sixth in the SCAC) and 1.9 steals (fifth in the SCAC) per game. He is shooting 53.8 percent from the floor (third in the SCAC). Britt leads the league in both free-throw percentage (88.6%) and three-point field goal percentage (50.6%). He is tied for fifth in three-point field goals made per game (2.47).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior guard Mike Moore of DePauw averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in leading the Tigers to two home SCAC victories over the weekend, including a 90-83 victory over 18th-ranked Millsaps on Sunday. Moore shot 66.7 percent (18-27) from the field, including 53.8 percent (7-13) from three-point range. In his last three conference games, Moore is averaging 28.0 points per contest. First-year guard Austin Parr of Birmingham-Southern
was the leading scorer in the Panthers’ wins over Colorado College and Austin College this week. He averaged 23.0 points, three rebounds and was 13-of-20 for 65 percent from the floor and eight-of-12 for 66.7 percent from three point range. He also made 12-of-13 free throws for 92.3 percent. Parr tied his career-high with 27 points against Colorado College, including seven-of-10 from three-point range for 70 percent and was a perfect six-of-six from the charity stripe. His two free throws with :05 left in the game against Colorado College help preserve a 73-71 win as the Kangaroos tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer. He led BSC with 19 points against Austin College that included 15 second-half points to help the Panthers pull away for a 83-66 win on Saturday. Parr was six-of-10 from the floor and six-of-seven from the free thrown line on the night. First-year guard Joe Kennedy of Oglethorpe averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in a weekend sweep of Trinity and Southwestern. Kennedy hit on 10 of 21 shots from the field (47.6%) and 9 of 12 from the free-throw line (75.0%). Junior forward Charles Houston of Trinity led the Tigers to a road weekend split in the SCAC, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage. Houston averaged 16.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game over the weekend, posting his first double-doubles of the year in both games. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds on Friday night, followed by 16 points and 13 boards on Saturday. For the weekend, Houston hit 13 of 19 (68.4%) from the field and 5 of 6 (83.3%) from the foul line. He nailed 6 of 10 shots on Friday, followed by 7 of 9 field goals Saturday night. For the season, Houston leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 boards per game, and is third in scoring with 9.1 points per game this year. He also leads the team with 34 steals, and he is connecting on 43.3% (61-141) of his shots this year. Senior forward Edrick Montgomery of Millsaps averaged 28.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks despite a winless road trip for the 18th-ranked Majors. The senior shot 65 percent from the floor (22-of-34) and 80 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-15), where he hit just 67 percent coming into the weekend. Montgomery tied a career-high with 34 points on Friday night against the Colonels, knocking down 14-of-19 shots from the floor and adding 13 rebounds for his 23rd career double-double. On Sunday at DePauw, Montgomery scored 22 points to go along with nine rebounds – one board shy of a second consecutive double-double. He also tied a career-high with four blocks, giving him seven on the weekend to stay at second in the league. Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College helped the ’Roos split their weekend series with Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern, averaging 20 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while also adding three steals. Alade scored 21 in the win over the Lynx and followed that up with a 19-point effort against BSC. Senior guard Mike Powell of Southwestern helped the Pirates to a 1-1 SCAC road weekend, averaging 17.5 points and 4.5 assists per game. Powell helped key the team’s 78-58 win at Sewanee with 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting and was 1 of 2 from three-point range. The following night he put up a game-high 20 points as SU fell at Oglethorpe, 66-59. Powell now has 10 double-digit scoring games this season. Colorado College, Hendrix, Rhodes and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 9

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Jan. 14th through Sunday, Jan. 20th)

MIKE MOORE OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 5-8, 160-pound junior guard from Elkhart, Ind., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 14 through Sunday, January 20.

Moore averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 rebounds per game as the Tigers swept SCAC road games at Colorado College and Austin College.

Moore, who had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.3 on the weekend, saved his most impressive performance for Sunday. After catching a finger in the eye during Friday's 97-63 victory at Colorado College, the junior guard was a game-time decision on Sunday.

Unfortunately for Austin College, Moore not only played but scored a career-high 32 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field, which included 5 of 7 from three-point range to lead the Tigers to the 86-70 victory.

He knocked down 14 of his 23 shot attempts on the weekend (60.9%), including 8 of 11 (72.7%) from bonus land, and was a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line.


For the season, Moore is averaging 16.3 points (fifth in the SCAC) and leads the SCAC in both assists (6.69 per game) and free-throw percentage (86.8%). He is also sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage (43.0%) and seventh in three-point field goals made (2.50 per game).

Sophomore guard Zach Bergstrom of Southwestern
stepped up and led the Pirates to a pair of wins against SCAC competition to snap a five-game losing streak. In SU’s meeting with Birmingham-Southern, he totaled a career-high 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting and he was 3 of 5 from three-point range. The following night, Bergstrom set a new career-high with 24 points on 7 of 12 shooting. He was 4 of 9 from beyond the three-point arc in the win over Rhodes. For the weekend, Bergstrom was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line and pulled down eight rebounds. He averaged 19.0 points per game in 19 minutes played per game. Senior guard Lorenzo Bailey of Millsaps hit a 5-foot jumper with 2.8 seconds left on Sunday afternoon to hold off Sewanee, 76-75, and help the Majors start 7-0 in SCAC play for the first time in school history dating back to the inaugural 1991-92 season. He started the game 1-of-8 from the floor but finished 4-of-4 with 11 points over the final 6:14 to get the win. The senior averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists and shot 54 percent (15-for-28) from the floor, including 7-of-16 from 3-point land, to give Millsaps a three-game sweep over Dallas, OU and Sewanee. Bailey also picked up nine assists in the three games against just three turnovers to help the Majors win their 12th-straight game overall. Junior guard T.C. Thomason of Centre averaged 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in helping Centre win a pair of SCAC road games and remain unbeaten in conference play. Thomason scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Colonels' 68-62 win over Austin Friday. Two days later, the junior guard scored 14 points with seven rebounds in a 70-55 win over Colorado. For the weekend, Thomason made 14 of his 26 (53.4%) shot attempts and five of his six (83.3%) free throw attempts. He is currently second on the team in points per game with 14.5, and lead the team in rebounds at 5.5. Sophomore guard Cal Rose of Hendrix posted a career-high 26 points in the Warriors’ 85-71 win over Sewanee on Friday. Rose was 9-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point land and 5-of-5 from the penalty stripe in Hendrix’s fourth straight win. Rose tallied 16 points and was 3-of-11 from three-point range in the Warriors’ loss to Oglethorpe. Junior guard Patrick Robinson of Trinity averaged 18.0 points per game over the weekend, leading the Tigers to a weekend split against Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern. Robinson hit 8 of 11 field goals – including 6 of 7 three-pointers – on his way to a career-high 24 points against Rhodes on Friday, then led the team with 12 points in Sunday’s game against Birmingham-Southern. He hit 13 of 25 (52%) from the field for the weekend, which includes 8 of 14 (57.1%) from three-point range. For the season, Robinson leads the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game and in field goal percentage with a 54.7% (70-128) mark. He is also hitting a team-best 45.9% (28-61) from three-point land. Senior guard Craig Jackson of Oglethorpe averaged 17.5 points per game, while shooting 52.2 percent (12-23) from the field as the Petrels split games on their SCAC road trip - losing 103-76 to 23rd-ranked Millsaps before bouncing back with a 71-70 victory over Hendrix on Sunday. He had a season-high 23 points against the Majors. Sophomore forward Chris Sturtevant of Austin College averaged 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and hit 92.3% (12-of-13) of his free throw attempts in losses to Centre and DePauw. Sturtevant matched his career high with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, grabbed seven boards, and added three steals in a near upset of Centre, and added a double-double with 18 points and 11 boards against DePauw. He also had three assists in the loss to the Tigers. Sophomore forward Roger Williams of Birmingham-Southern averaged 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game helping the Panthers to a 1-1 record. Williams was 9-of-13 in field goals for 69 percent. He led BSC with eight rebounds and was one of three players in double figures with 13 points against Southwestern. Williams again led BSC with seven rebounds and scored eight points in the win at Trinity on Sunday. Colorado College, Rhodes and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 8

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Jan. 7th through Sunday, Jan. 13th)

EDRICK MONTGOMERY OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-6, 220-pound senior forward from Pearl, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 7 through Sunday, January 13.

Montgomery
averaged 25.0 points and 14.0 boards, while posting his 21st and 22nd career double-doubles in the Majors’ weekend sweep over SCAC foes Colorado College and Austin.

He shot a combined 46.2 percent (18 of 39) from the floor and 70 percent (14 of 20) from the charity stripe.

The senior poured in a season and game-high 28 points and grabbed 13 boards against the Tigers, scoring 14-straight points over a 2:38 span late in the game to turn a four-point lead into an 11-point win. He also picked up a pair of blocks in the game to move into fifth all-time on the Millsaps career blocks list with 80. 

Against the ‘Roos, Montgomery scored a game-high 22 points to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds in 27 minutes of work.


For the season, Montgomery is averaging 13.5 points (15th in the SCAC) and 9.0 rebounds per game (third in the SCAC). He is also averaging 1.58 steals (ninth in the SCAC).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore guard Cal Rose of Hendrix scored 22 points against Austin and a season-high 24 against Colorado in two SCAC road wins for the Warriors. Rose was 7 of 15 from the field and 6 of 7 from the penalty stripe against Austin. He was 6 of 11 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point land, and 8-of-11 from the free throw line against Colorado College. For the weekend, Rose averaged 23.0 points per game and shot 50.0 percent (13-26) from the field and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the foul line. First-year forward Todd Ward of Oglethorpe had a stat-stuffing line of 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, six steals and two blocks as the Petrels defeated Sewanee, 62-59. Ward hit on 6 of 10 shots from the field. Junior guard T.C. Thomason of Centre averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in helping the Colonels to two SCAC road wins last week. In Centre's 77-53 win over Birmingham Southern Friday, Thomason scored 13 points with three rebounds and an assist in only 19 minutes of action. Two days later, the junior guard posted his second double-double of the season with 17 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and one steal in the Colonels 84-77 win over Rhodes. In the two games combined, he connected on 12 of his 16 shot attempts, including three of his five three-point attempts and both free throws. Thomason is currently averaging 14.1 points per game. Sophomore guard Daniel Hudson of Birmingham-Southern averaged 13.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while making 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor, 37 percent (3-of-8) on three-point field goals and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line to help BSC to a 1-1 weekly record. He scored 16 points and had four rebounds in BSC’s 78-63 win over DePauw on Sunday. He made 5-of-8 field goals (62.5 percent) with one three-pointer and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.  On Friday, Hudson had 10 points and three boards in a 77-53 loss to Centre. Junior forward Jonathan Lewis of Trinity scored a career-high 11 points to lead the Tigers to a 68-52 victory over Southwestern on Saturday evening. Lewis hit 3 of 9 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line on his way to 11 points. He also recorded a career-best five blocks in the game, as well as grabbing four rebounds in just 21 minutes of action. For the season, Lewis is sixth on the team in scoring, averaging 4.8 points per game. He leads the team with 16 total blocks in 13 games, and is pulling down 4.3 rebounds per game this season. Sophomore forward Chris Sturtevant of Austin College put up some big numbers over the weekend for the ‘Roos, averaging 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while hitting 4-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc and shooting 46.7% from the field overall. Sturtevant scored a career-best 22 points and added nine rebounds as the ‘Roos were narrowly edged by Hendrix, and finished the weekend with a 14-point, eight-rebound, two-block effort against Millsaps. Colorado College, DePauw, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 7

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Wednesday, Jan. 2nd through Sunday, Jan. 6th)

KOLA ALADE OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 6-3, 180-pound sophomore guard from Plano, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Wednesday, January 2 through Sunday, January 6.

Alade helped the ’Roos get off to a 2-0 start in 2008 by averaging 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 56 percent from the field as the ’Roos beat the University of Dallas and Colorado College.

The win over Colorado College was the first-ever SCAC men's basketball victory for the 'Roos - who joined the conference in 2006 and went 0-14 in league play that season.

Alade reached 20 points for the sixth time this season when he knocked down 7 of 10 attempts to score 20 in a 63-48 win over Dallas on Thursday. He had a stat-sheet stuffing performance of 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds in Saturday's historic 63-56 win over Colorado College.


For the season, Alade is averaging 17.5 points (fourth in the SCAC) and 4.2 rebounds per game and is shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 77.1 percent from the free-throw line (tied for ninth in the SCAC). He is also averaging 2.55 assists (tied for 10th in the SCAC).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Thomas Britt of Centre continued his hot play averaging 17.0 points, 3.0 steals, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in helping Centre sweep a pair of home conference games to remain unbeaten in the SCAC. In the Colonels' 80-68 win over Oglethorpe, Britt scored 12 points and had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Two days later, the senior guard helped Centre defeat Sewanee 85-68 by scoring a team-high 22 points, while adding four steals, two rebounds and an assist in 27 minutes of action. In the two games, he combined to make 11 of his 19 attempts, including six of 10 from the three-point line and six of six from the charity stripe. Britt has now scored in double figures in 10 of Centre's 11 games, including the last nine games. He currently leads the Colonels at 15.1 points and 2.0 steals per game. Junior guard Chris Sanders of Millsaps, in the Majors’ weekend sweep over Southwestern and Trinity, averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Sanders capped a 13-2 Millsaps run in the first half against Trinity with a 3-ball, turning what was a six-point deficit into a five-point lead. The junior scored 15 points on 6-of-11 (3-of-6 from 3-point land) shooting Friday and 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting Saturday. He also fell two rebounds shy on both nights of recording his first career double-double, while tying a career-high with four assists against Southwestern. Junior guard Patrick Robinson of Trinity scored 20 or more points in both games over the weekend, leading Trinity to a 1-1 record in SCAC road games. After posting a career-high of 19 points heading into the weekend, Robinson eclipsed that total against both Hendrix (21) and Millsaps (20) over the weekend. He hit a blistering 16 of 23 (69.6%) from the field – including 6 of 8 (75.0%) from three-point range. He has now made two or more three-pointers in four consecutive games. For the season, Robinson is second on the team with 11.0 points per game.  He is shooting 54.2% (52-96) from the field and a team-high 43.2% (19-44) from three-point range. Junior forward Andrew King of Hendrix passed two significant milestones in his last two games. The 6-foot-6, 200-pounder scored his 1,000th career point on Friday against Trinity University and pulled down his 500th career rebound Sunday afternoon against Southwestern. King tallied 27 points on Friday to give him 1,024 career points before matching his career-high 18 rebounds (set on 12/8/07 vs. Univ. of the Ozarks) on Sunday to give him 501 career boards. First-year guard Wil Gilmore of Birmingham-Southern averaged 13.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and had three assists while shooting 71 percent (10-of-14) from the floor and 71 percent (5-of-7) from three-point range. He scored 12 points on five-of-eight on field goals and two-of-four three-pointers against Emory. Gilmore led BSC’s scoring attack with 15 points versus Rhodes, going 5-of-6 field goals and there-for-three from beyond the arc. His two free throws with :21 left in the contest against RC gave BSC a 10-point cushion as BSC went seven-for-eight from the charity stripe in the final :57 of the game. Colorado College, DePauw, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 6

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Dec. 17th through Tuesday, Jan. 1st)

BRIAN OILAR OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 6-7, 215-pound senior from Noblesville, Ind., and RODNEY ROGAN OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-5, 200-pound senior forward from Houston, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, December 17 through Tuesday, January 1.

Oilar
was named MVP of the Tampa Bay Shootout after the Tigers picked up victories over Case Western (74-73) and Mount St. Joseph (76-72) to earn the tournament championship. DePauw also earned victories over Rose-Hulman and Kenyon over the last two weeks.

Oilar equaled a career-high with 13 rebounds against Rose-Hulman and then topped it with 14 against Case Western Reserve. He had a career-high 20 points against Case Western and then reestablished it the next day with 22 against Mount St. Joseph.

During the two-week period, Oilar averaged a double-double with 16.8 points and 11.3 rebounds while shooting 56.5 percent (26-46) from the field, which included 50.0 percent (6-12) from three-point range. He also sank 81.8 percent (9-11) from the free-throw line.

For the season Oilar is averaging 14.4 points (12th in the SCAC) and 8.3 rebounds (fourth in the SCAC) per game and is shooting 56.9 percent from the field (fourth in the SCAC).

Rogan
averaged 24.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in back-to-back wins over NAIA opponents Belhaven and Loyola-New Orleans. 

The senior fell just two points shy of a new career-high with 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the floor and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the year to help the Majors to their first win over Belhaven, 75-70, in the Tim Wise era. Rogan netted 15 of his game and team-high 25 in the first half, knocking down a jumper at the 13:51 mark that started a 19-4 run for Millsaps and gave them the lead for the first time in the contest. 

Against the Wolfpack, Rogan netted a game-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists in an 89-69 win over Loyola-New Orleans. 

The Houston senior, who is averaging a team-best 15.3 points per game (ninth in the SCAC), hit the 1,000-point mark in his career two weeks ago and is now just 37 rebounds shy of hitting the 500 rebound mark. In addition, Rogan is fifth in the SCAC in rebounding (8.1 per game), eighth in assists (2.89 per game) and tied for seventh in steals (1.78 per game).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Thomas Britt of Centre helped lead the Colonels to a 4-0 record over the last two weeks, earning wins over in-state rivals Thomas More and Transylvania, as well as wins over Adrian and Berea in the Colonels' annual holiday tournament. Britt averaged 17.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in those contest and was named the MVP of the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Tournament. He scored 10 points in a 71-56 win over Thomas More followed by a 16-point, four steal, three assist effort in the Colonels' 66-56 win over Transylvania. The senior guard then returned to action after Christmas and scored 18-points with four assists in a 79-62 win over Adrian. One night later, Britt scored 24 points, only one point shy of his career-high, and grabbed four rebounds in a 79-71 overtime-win over Berea in the tournament championship. In that game, Britt scored four clutch points at the end of regulation including two free throws to tie the game and force an extra period. For those four contests, he made 19 of his 35 shot attempts (54.3%), including eight of 15 from the three-point line (53.3%) and 22 of 24 from the charity stripe (91.7%). Britt currently leads Centre at 14.7 points per game this season.
First-year guard Aaron Parr of Birmingham-Southern averaged 19.5 points, four rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals while leading BSC to a 2-0 mark over the last final half of December. The Atlanta, Ga., native scored 27 points and had six rebounds that included 7-of-11 from the field (63.6 percent) in an 83-77 overtime win at Huntingdon College on December 18. He added 12 points with two rebounds, two assists, and a steal in a 71-67 win at home against Huntingdon on December 29. Over the two games, Parr was 9-of-15 from the floor (60 percent) and made 37.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc (37.5 percent) while connecting on 18-of-25 free throws for 72 percent. Junior guard Patrick Robinson of Trinity averaged 9.5 points per game over the holidays, leading Trinity to a 3-1 record over the past three weeks. Robinson hit 15 of 32 (.469) from the field – including 5 of 14 (.357) from three-point range – for the four games. He led the team in scoring each of the last two games, scoring 14 points against Wabash, and adding 17 points against Ohio Northern – both in the Trinity/Southwestern Holiday Classic. Robinson was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for his efforts. For the season, Robinson is second on the team with 9.1 points per game, hitting 13 of 36 (.361) of his three-point shots and 36 of 73 (.493) overall from the field. Austin College, Colorado College, Hendrix, Oglethorpe, Rhodes, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 5

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Dec. 10th through Sunday, Dec. 16th)

ANDREW KING OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a 6-6, 200-pound junior forward from Granbury, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, December 10 through Sunday, December 16.

King posted his league-leading fifth double-double of the season on Thursday against University of Dallas.

He tallied 20 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field and 8 of 11 from the charity stripe and also grabbed 12 rebounds as the Warriors improved to 5-2 with the 77-67 victory.

On the season, King is averaging 17.7 points (fifth in the SCAC) and a league-leading 12.4 rebounds per game. He is shooting 47.3 percent (13th in the SCAC) from the field and averaging 2.57 assists per game (tied for 12th in the SCAC).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior guard Cory Smith of Rhodes helped the Lynx to their third straight win, a home victory over Huntingdon College on Saturday. Smith scored 22 points on 7 of 15 shooting (46.7%), and also added a season-high five rebounds and grabbed two steals. On the season, Smith is averaging 19.7 points a game which has him at the top of the conference in scoring. He has reached double figures in scoring each game this season and 19 out of his last 20 games dating to last season. Junior guard T.C. Thomason of Centre scored a season-high 18 points in helping the Colonels to a convincing 86-69 win over Cincinnati-Clermont. Thomason scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the first half and finished the game five of seven from the field, including three of three from the three-point line and five of five from the charity stripe. The currently leads the Colonels in scoring at 13.0 points per game through five contests. Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award, and Austin College, DePauw, Colorado College, Millsaps, Sewanee, Southwestern and Trinity did not play.


WEEK 4

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Dec. 3rd through Sunday, Dec. 9th)

JARED HOSKINS OF RHODES COLLEGE, a 6-5, 215-pound sophomore guard from Rossville, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, December 3 through Sunday, December 9.

Hoskins helped Rhodes get two non-conference wins this week with victories over Principia and Free Will Baptist.

On Monday night, Hoskins scored 21 points (all in the second half) as he nailed an amazing 7 of 9 performance from three-point range in the second half. It is the most three-point field goals made by a Rhodes player in a single game since Bryan Baird sank 10 against DePauw on Jan. 26, 2001.

On Tuesday night, Hoskins scored 15 points in limited action (22 minutes) as the Lynx cruised to a 90-59 win. He scored 15 points on 3 of 7 shooting from behind the arc and added two steals and two rebounds.

For the two games, Hoskins was 10 of 19 from 3-point range (52.6%) and 13 of 29 (44.8%) from the field in averaging 18.0 points per game. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists while helping on the defensive end with two steals.

On the season, Hoskins is averaging 19.7 points (tied for the SCAC lead) and shooting 49.0% from the three-point line (10th in the SCAC).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior guard Chris Sanders of Millsaps knocked down 13 of 23 shots (4-of-9 from beyond the arc) on the weekend while averaging 16.5 points, 6.0 boards, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals. In a 2-0 weekend for Millsaps on the road, the junior pumped in a season-high 19 points on 7-of-11 aim in a 12-point win at Pensacola on Friday in addition to 14 points in a 10-point win at Huntingdon College on Saturday. Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College continued his strong start to the season with a 24-point performance in a loss to UT-Dallas in which the sophomore guard’s hot shooting helped the ’Roos come back from a 24-point deficit before ultimately falling to the Comets.  Alade connected on 5-of-11 shots from beyond the arc and added team-highs of five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Colorado College, DePauw, Hendrix, Millsaps, Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Birmingham-Southern, Centre and Trinity did not play.


WEEK 3

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Nov. 26th through Sunday, Dec. 2nd)

MATT NESTHEIDE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 170-pound senior guard from Edgewood, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, November 26 through Sunday, December 2.

Nestheide averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a steal in two Colonels' wins last week.

In the 80-67 non-conference win over Berea on Tuesday, Nestheide scored 18 points, while adding six assists, five rebounds and a steal in 34 minutes of action. Four days later, the senior guard scored 14 points with four rebounds, three assists and a steal in a 78-64 win over previously unbeaten DePauw.

In the two games, Nestheide shot 54.5% (12-22) from the field, including 57.1% (4-7) from the three-point line while making all four free throw attempts. The senior currently leads the Colonels in scoring at 14.3 points per game (tied for 13th in the SCAC) through four games. He is tied for sixth in the league in assists (3.0 per game) and leads the SCAC in free throw percentage (100.0% - 11 of 11).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior forward Rodney Rogan of Millsaps tied a career-high with 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor and 8-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe to hit the 1,000-point mark in his career and help the visiting Majors defeat Hendrix, 79-64, in the conference-opener for both teams. The senior from Houston scored 14 of his game-high 26 in the first half in 18 minutes of work to give Millsaps an 11-point lead heading into intermission. Rogan also grabbed eight boards and picked up a pair of dimes to add to his team-leading totals of 41 rebounds (8.2 per game) and 14 assists in the early going. Senior forward Matt Caplan of Southwestern helped to lead SU to a 2-0 start in SCAC play for just the second time in the last six seasons. In the Pirates’ 65-44 win over Colorado College, Caplan posted his first double-double of the year, scoring 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting and pulling down 12 rebounds. He was also 5 of 9 from three-point range. The following night, Caplan again led the way on the boards with nine. He added seven points for SU in the 71-66 victory over Austin College. For the weekend, Caplan averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, and also had three steals and a pair of blocks. Senior guard Craig Jackson of Oglethorpe averaged 17.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, hitting on 12 of 23 (52.2%) from the field including 50.0% (9-18) from three-point range as the Petrels went 2-0 to begin SCAC play. Junior guard Patrick Robinson of Trinity led the Tigers in opening up SCAC play with a pair of home victories last weekend, defeating both Austin College and Colorado College. Robinson averaged 12.5 points per game for the weekend, connecting on 10 of 16 from the field overall – including 5 of 10 three-point shots. Against Austin College on Friday, Robinson scored a career-high 18 points, hitting 7 of 11 from the field overall and 4 of 7 from three-point range. It was only his second double-digit scoring game of the season. His back-to-back threes to open up the second half turned a 16-point lead into a 22-point advantage on the first two possessions, effectively securing the win. For the season, Robinson is third on the team with 8.8 points per game and is shooting 51.2% (21-41) from the field. He has hit 8 of 22 three-point shots for a .364 percentage on the year. Junior forward Cory Smith of Rhodes, in helping the Lynx to an opening weekend road split, scored 26 points at Sewanee and also grabbed four rebounds in the 76-61 win. He was 7 of 14 from the field, which included 3 of 5 from the three-point line. In Sunday's loss to Oglethorpe, Smith scored 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting and also grabbed three rebounds. For the weekend, Smith scored 43 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He shot 48.1% (13 of 27) from the field, which included 44.4% (4 of 9) from three-point range. Junior forward Andrew King of Hendrix came two rebounds short of posting a pair of double-doubles this week. King totaled 17 points and eight rebounds against Central Baptist on Tuesday and added 15 points and 15 rebounds vs. Millsaps on Saturday. First-year forward Brady Ohlsen of Colorado College averaged 10.0 rebounds and 7.5 points per game in losses at Southwestern and Trinity. His 11 rebounds at Trinity was his second game with 10+ rebounds. Ohlsen has led Colorado College in rebounding five times and has tied for the team lead twice. He leads CC in rebounding and blocked shots, and is third in scoring. Sophomore guard Kola Alade of Austin College averaged 19.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 44.9% from the field, and posted averages of 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in the 'Roos first two conference games of the season. Alade had 21 points and five assists in a win over Dallas Christian, and finished off the week with a 23-point, nine-rebound effort in a loss to Southwestern. Birmingham-Southern, DePauw and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 2

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Nov. 19th through Sunday, Nov. 25th)

MIKE MOORE OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a 5-8, 160-pound junior guard from Elkhart, Ind., and BEN PURSELL OF SEWANEE-UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a 6-6, 223-pound junior forward from Franklin, Tenn., have been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, November 19 through Sunday, November 25.

Moore was named MVP of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge as the Tigers went 2-0 and captured the tourney title.

Moore had a career-high 28 points in Saturday's win over Marian (Ind.), and averaged 23.5 points and 9.0 assists per game for the weekend. He shot 61.1% (11-18) from the field, including 60.0% (9-15) from three-point range.

On the season, Moore is averaging 15.3 points (12th in the SCAC) and a league-leading 9.25 assists per game. He is shooting 43.8% from the field and 84.0% (ninth in the SCAC) from the foul line. Moore's 3.0 three-point field goals made per game is good for a tie for sixth in the conference.

Pursell wa
s named MVP for his play at the Birmingham-Southern Black Tie Classic Tournament this past weekend. The Tigers went 1-1 at the tourney with a victory over Piedmont (71-47) and a loss to University of Dallas (81-76).

Pursell averaged 29.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per game on the weekend while shooting 74.1% (20-27) from the field.

On the season, Pursell is leading the SCAC in both points (24.4) and rebounds (11.2) per game. He is second in the conference in field goal percentage (64.1%).

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior forward David Foley of Hendrix was a key player in the Warriors' third straight victory - a 82-75 victory over University of Dallas. He led the team with 20 points and posted game-highs with three assists and three steals in Hendrix's only contest of the week. Junior guard Nate Brodman of Colorado College averaged 20.5 points per game against two Division II opponents – Adams State College and CU-Colorado Springs – and was named to the all-tournament team at the Hyatt Place Mountain Lion Classic. Brodman hit 7 of 11 three-point attempts against ASC to move past Jimmy Paulis (1997-2000) into sole possession of seventh place on CC’s career list for three pointers made with 128. Brodman leads Colorado College averaging 16.0 per game. First-year guard Aaron Parr of Birmingham-Southern led BSC in scoring in two games against the University of Dallas and Piedmont College. Parr scored 17 points and had four assists against Dallas. He was 4-of-8 from the field, 3-of-5 (60 percent) from three point range and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. He netted 23 points and grabbed five rebounds versus Piedmont College on Sunday, shooting 53 percent from the field and was 5-for-8 for 62 percent from three point range. For the week, Parr average 20 points and 3.5 rebounds and had five assists and three steals. He shot 52 percent (8-of-15) from the floor and 61 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-13). Senior center Edrick Montgomery of Millsaps averaged 12.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Majors, with their only loss to Division I foe Southeastern Louisiana. The senior chipped in his first double-double of the year (18th of his career) in a 21-point win over Rust College on Saturday, tallying 20 points and 12 boards to go along with five steals and three blocks. For the weekend, Montgomery picked up a total of seven blocks and six steals in addition to sinking 8-of-14 free throws. Senior center Mike Gilb of Trinity posted a solid 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in Trinity’s 67-65 win over Texas Lutheran on Tuesday night. Gilb had six offensive rebounds on the night, hitting 4 of 8 field goals and 5 of 8 foul shots. He hit 3 of 4 for nine points in the decisive second half, helping Trinity to erase a three-point halftime deficit. He had five points and three rebounds during Trinity’s 12-2 second half run that put them in control of the game with just over 11 minutes remaining. For the season, Gilb is second on the team with 16 rebounds (5.3 per game) and is averaging 5.7 points per game. He has hit 4 of 12 field goals and 9 of 12 from the foul line for the year, and is tied for second on the team with four assists. First-year guard Joe Kennedy of Oglethorpe averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as the Petrels went 1-1 at the Maryville (Tenn.) College Thanksgiving Tournament. Kennedy shot 64.3% from the field, including 50.0% from three-point range, as well as a perfect 100.0% from the charity stripe. Austin College and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Centre and Rhodes did not play.


WEEK 1

SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week

ANDREW KING OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a 6-6, 200-pound junior forward from Granbury, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Friday, November 16 through Sunday, November 18.

King tallied game-highs in both points and rebounds in both games this weekend as the Warriors posted wins against Rhema Bible (90-77 in overtime) and Westminster (69-45) at the third annual Cliff Garrison Classic at Hendrix.

King had 33 points and 13 boards on Friday against Rhema Bible and 15 points and nine boards the following afternoon against Westminster (Mo.).

He sank 18 of 28 shots from the field (64.3%) and averaged 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds for the tournament.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior forward Ben Pursell of Sewanee had 41 points on the weekend as Sewanee moved to 2-0 on the year with wins over Texas-Tyler and Emory. The former Battle Ground Academy standout averaged 20.5 points a game, logged four steals, three blocks, five assists, and 19 rebounds on the weekend. He had a double-double on Sunday and hit on 57.9% (11-19) of his shots for the weekend. Junior guard B.J. Moon of Trinity averaged 18 points over the weekend to lead Trinity to the Midway Classic Championship, earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors in the process. He scored 19 points in the season opener against Ohio Wesleyan, then had 17 points on Sunday against Chicago – hitting 4 of 4 threes in that championship game. Moon hit 12 of 22 (.545) from the field – including 5 of 7 (.714) three-pointers – and 7 of 9 (.778) free throws in the two wins. Moon also handed out a team best six assists (3.0 per game) and grabbed four rebounds for the Tigers. Last season, Moon was third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.6 points/game. He shot 41.7% (85-204) for the year, which included 38.2% (39-102) from three-point range. He was also second on the team with 42 assists in 2006-07 (1.5 per game). Junior guard Mike Moore of DePauw averaged 7.0 points and 9.5 assists per game in leading the Tigers to wins over Illinois Tech (89-66) and Manchester (68-60). Senior guard Deonte Oscar of Millsaps
scored a team and career-high 20 points off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting (3-of-3 from 3-point land) to lift the host Majors to a season-opening, 75-69 win over Pensacola Christian. Oscar also added three assists and a steal as the Majors forced 20 PCC turnovers on the afternoon. Senior guard Matt Nestheide of Centre averaged 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in helping Centre to a 1-1 record in its opening weekend. In the Colonels 68-67 loss to Rust, Nestheide, scored 12 points with four rebounds and three assists. One day later, the senior guard added 13 points and four rebounds in a 76-59 win over LaGrange. Austin College, Birmingham-Southern, Colorado College, Rhodes and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Oglethorpe did not play.
