the league's leading scorer (18.0 ppg) and rebounder (9.4 rpg) - only the
second player in SCAC history to pull off the double-double and the first to do
it since Derek Watkins of Fisk (92-93 season). Sophomore center Jared
Woytasczyk of Southwestern had a big game for the Pirates in Saturday's
season-ending 85-52 victory at Hendrix. Woytasczyk had 20 points on 6-of-13

La., has been selected the SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played the week of Monday,
February 11 through
Sunday, February 17.
Waguespack was superb this past weekend as he led the Majors to two
convincing wins over Rhodes and Hendrix. On Friday, Waguespack tallied 13
points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out six assists, and blocked two
shots as the Majors defeated Rhodes 89-77. Then in Sunday's 83-54 victory over

his brilliant career. Posting his first career triple double in his last game on
the Millsaps' hardwood, the ubiquitous Waguespack netted 17 points,
grabbed 14 rebounds, and made 11 steals with eight of his take-aways coming in
the first half. The 11 thefts broke the SCAC's single-game record of nine -
shared by Albert Johnson of Rhodes (2/4/94 vs. Trinity) and Stacy Vines of
Hendrix (2/13/94 @ Sewanee).
With 40 seconds to go in the first frame, Waguespack picked off an errant
Warrior pass for his 258th steal of his career as he etched his name in the SCAC
record book as the league's all-time steals leader. Waguespack's 11
steals also allowed him to break the Millsaps' single-season steals mark.
The senior has 70 take-aways to his credit this season, surpassing the mark he
set last year of 69. His 17 points also enabled him to reach the 1,600
point plateau for his career, as he became only the second Millsaps player
to ever accomplish that feat (placing him third all-time in the SCAC).
For the season, Waguespack is sixth in the SCAC in scoring, averaging
15.0 points per game and is 10th in rebounding with 5.8 boards per game. He
leads the conference in steals per game (2.92) and is eighth in assists per game

First-year guard/forward Stephen Russell of Rhodes, in games against
Millsaps and Oglethorpe over the weekend, posted two more double-doubles (17
points and 13 rebounds against Millsaps; 21 points and 11 rebounds against
Oglethorpe). So far in 2001-02, Russell has amassed seven double-doubles.
Furthermore, he has been held to single-digit scoring in
just two of the team's 22 games. Junior guard Barrett Karvis of Oglethorpe
averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game as the
Petrels split games with Hendrix (84-65 win) and Rhodes (77-67 loss). Karvis

rebounds per game in two conference wins over Centre and Sewanee over the
weekend. Coelen also averaged 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the two contests,
and shot .400 (8-20) from the field, which included a 5-8 (.625) performance
from 3-point range. Coelen scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds on
Friday against Centre, and then finished the weekend with a 21-point,
four-rebound performance on Sunday. He nailed key free throws in both games, and
finished 6-8 from the line in each. Sophomore forward Jason Atwell of Centre
averaged 15.0 points per game, hitting 8-of-16 shots from the field - including

week, he added four steals in the three games.
For his career, with his 79-point outburst this week, Nixon moved to
seventh on the all-time SCAC scoring list with 1,434 points. He needs just nine
points to surpass Trinity's Quintin Mason (1997/98 - 2000/01) and 17
points to overtake Sewanee's Turner Emery (1994/95 - 1997/98) for fifth
all-time.

Morris put Trinity back in the game against DePauw, scoring 15 points on 5-of-5
shooting - including 3-of-3 three-pointers and 2-of-2 from the line - in the
second half. Senior guard Daniel Waguespack of Millsaps, despite the
second-half stumble for the Majors, continues to play impressive basketball as
he led his team to a 1-1 record this past weekend. In Friday's 81-78 win over
Centre, Waguespack nailed 8-of-14 shots from the floor and hit 8-of-9 free
throws as he poured in a game high 24 points. Waguespack also pulled down eight
rebounds, dished out four assists, and made three steals in the Majors' win. On

Rhodes, Rose-Hulman and Southwestern did not nominate
anyone for the award.
WEEK 11
(For games played from Monday, January 28 through Sunday, February 3)
It was the second-highest scoring game in
SCAC history, trailing only last season's 107-103 Millsaps overtime victory at
Oglethorpe. But Friday night's 104-102 double-overtime thriller between Rhodes
and Centre produced not only points, but also a couple of player-of-the-week
performances.
AUSTIN LUTZ OF RHODES COLLEGE, a
6-1, 170-pound sophomore guard from Birmingham, Ala., and MATT MOONEY OF
CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 175-pound senior guard from Dixon, Ky.,
have been selected SCAC Men's Basketball Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played
the week of Monday, January 28 through Sunday, February 3.
LUTZ led Rhodes to two important wins over SCAC opponents Centre
College and Univ. of the South (Sewanee)--both of which were teams that Rhodes
had lost to earlier this season. Lutz put up 16 points on Friday night in
a 104-102 upset double overtime win over Centre, and then turned around and
scored another 12 points on Sunday in a 65-62 win over Sewanee. His 28 points
for the two games averaged to 14.0 points per game - almost five points more per
game than his season-average heading into the weekend.
In the second overtime period against Centre College, Lutz scored a key
3-pointer with just 0:20 left on the clock, to put Rhodes ahead of the Colonels
by five points (99-94) and forcing Centre to repeatedly foul Rhodes in order to
get the ball back on each change of possession. He also scored both of
his free-throw shots with 0:03 left on the clock to put Rhodes ahead for
good (the 102nd and 103rd points of the game).
In addition, according to Rhodes coach Herb Hilgeman, "What you can't see
by looking at a box score is that Austin's defensive presence on the court is
the reason Rhodes won two games this weekend. He was probably the toughest
player on the floor both nights."
In addition to his 14 points per game, Lutz hit 9 of 19 shots from the
floor (47.4%) from his guard position and chipped in with three rebounds, three
assists and one steal.
For the season, Lutz is 29th in the league in scoring, averaging 9.7
points per game. He is tenth in assists, averaging 2.2 dishes per contest and is
shooting 78.9% from the charity stripe (56-71) - good for sixth in the SCAC.
Although he was on the losing side of that 104-102 shootout, MOONEY
had an unbelievable game - putting on one of the best single-game three-point
shooting exhibitions in the history of the SCAC.
Mooney hit 12 of 18 field goal attempts, including an incredible 11 of 16
from three-point range, and was a perfect 3 of 3 from the free-throw line to
score a SCAC season-high 38 points. He broke Coach Greg Mason's school record
for most 3-pointers in a game and tied the league record for most 3-point field
goal attempts.
His scoring streak didn't stop on Friday night as Mooney had 17 points on
5 of 8 shooting from three-point range in just 23 minutes of play as the
Colonels' rebounded to defeat Hendrix 80-48 on Sunday.
For the week, Mooney shot 64.3% from the field (18-28), including an
unconscious 66.7% from three-point range (16-24), and averaged 27.5 points per
game. He also chipped in with three rebounds, two assists and two steals as
Centre moved to 7-5 in league play - good for fifth in the SCAC.
Mooney is currently fifth in the league in scoring (15.6 ppg) as well as
12th in the SCAC in steals (1.26 spg). He is shooting 45.5% from the field
(97-213 - eighth in the SCAC). And after his three-point fest over the weekend, Mooney
is now leading the conference in both three-point field goals made per game
(3.6) and three-point field goal percentage (45.9% - 68-148). At his current
pace, Mooney would eclipse the league's all-time single-season record of
89 three-pointers - held by Centre graduate David DeMarcus from the 1992-93
season.
Other outstanding individual performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Daniel Waguespack of Millsaps averaged 23 points per game
this past weekend as he led the Majors to a 1-1 record. On Friday against
DePauw, Waguespack paced the Majors with 19 points as he shot 8-of-18 from the
floor. Offensively, Waguespack also dished out two assists as the Majors upset
the nationally ranked Tigers 71-66. Defensively versus the Tigers, Waguespack
blocked two shots and managed three steals. In Sunday's 58-54 loss to Rose-Hulman, Waguespack scored a game high 27 points
and became the Majors second all-time leading scorer with 1, 534 points scored
in his Millsaps career. Waguespack was 10 of 19 from the floor including a game
high three 3-pointers. Defensively, Waguespack literally stole the show as
he garnered a game high five steals in the contest. Junior forward Jeremy
Bettis of DePauw had 37 points in two games (18.5 ppg) and hit 16-of-25
shots from the floor (64.0%) as the Tigers split games with Millsaps
(71-66 L) and Oglethorpe (99-71 W). Bettis also averaged 9.0 rebounds per game
and sank five of six free-throw attempts. His big game was Friday night against
Millsaps when he led DePauw with 23 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward

the Engineers swept SCAC road games at Oglethorpe and Millsaps. Unton shot 75%
from the field (9-12) with three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
Against Oglethorpe, Unton was 6-7 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line with
16 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Nate Coelen of Trinity scored
10 points, grabbed three rebounds, and handed out two assists in Trinity's 60-56
win over Southwestern - the Tigers' only game of the past week. Coelen scored
seven of his points in the second half, including scoring four of the team's
final five points to seal the win. Coelen drew a foul with 17 seconds to go
in the game - only two seconds on
the shot clock - and the Tigers clinging to a one-point lead. He sank both
free throws to give Trinity the three-point edge, and seal the victory. Coelen
also made two more free throws inside the two-minute mark to help keep
Southwestern at bay. Sophomore guard Kyle Ellisor of Southwestern had 12
points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in the Pirates 60-56 loss to
Trinity. Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate
anyone for the award.
