2003 SCAC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
FINALS

#1 TRINITY UNIVERSITY 63, #2 DEPAUW UNIVERSITY 47
(Game Box)

In the championship game of the inaugural SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament, the
Trinity University women led from start to finish and ran away from the DePauw Tigers to take the 63-47 victory Saturday on the campus of Rhodes College.

With the victory, the TU Tigers improved to 23-5 and earned the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. DePauw dropped to 22-5 and must wait word of an at-large berth when the tournament field is announced Sunday night.

Coming into Saturday's championship, Trinity and DePauw had distinguished themselves as the class of the tournament as both cruised into the title game.

But on Saturday night, it was all Trinity as the Tigers raced out to a 14-2 lead at the 14:28 mark. Tournament MVP senior Melissa Carl had six points during that run to get Trinity rolling.

DePauw did fight back, however, and when senior Dana Ferguson hit one of two free throws the Tigers had cut the Trinity deficit to 21-19 with 1:08 remaining in the half. Trinity's Christina Moore closed out the half with a field goal and the TU Tigers led 23-19 at the break.

Just as it did to start the game, Trinity opened the second half on a tear, scoring seven consecutive points to increase the margin to 30-19 with 17:15 remaining in the game. From that point, DePauw could not get closer than seven and Trinity led by as much as 20.

The Trinity defense was the key to the game, as DePauw shot just 25.0% (15-60) for the game.

Leading Trinity was Carl with 14 points and eight rebounds, followed by fellow senior and all-tournament recipient Megan Selmon with 13 points and six rebounds. Allison Wooley chipped in with 11 points and Jenna Smith had eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.

For DePauw, senior Dana Ferguson had 14 points and 16 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team as well.
