#4 CENTRE COLLEGE 71, #5 SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY 63

Centre College advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship with a 71-63 win over Southwestern University.

Centre improved to 13-13 on the season and will face Trinity University tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. Southwestern finished the season with a 16-10 record.

Centre’s Jennifer Patterson led all scorers with 24 points to go along with her 10 rebounds. Beth Johnson added 14 and Amy Barlow chipped in with 10 to help lead Centre to the opening round victory.

Southwestern was led by Misty Reichenau who scored a team-high 19 in just 20 minutes. Erin Nelson scored 13 and Sam Peden added 10 for the Pirates. 

For the game, Centre shot 44.9 percent (22-49) from the field while Southwestern shot 45.8 percent (27-59). The difference in the game came at the free-throw line where Centre made 23 of 32 attempts to Southwestern’s 8 of 11. 


#1 TRINITY UNIVERSITY 73, #8 UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH 35

Trinity squashed any plans of a Sewanee upset, blowing open a relatively close game at the half by outscoring the UOS Tigers 39-12 in the second half to earn a 73-35 victory in first-round women's action of the SCAC Basketball Tournament.

The TU Tigers improved to 21-5 and play the winner of Centre College at 6:30 p.m. in second round action at Rhodes College on Friday. Sewanee ends its season at 7-18.

Sewanee hung tough for a half, trailing just 34-23 at the intermission. But the TU Tigers were just too talented and too deep in the end.

Trinity only had one player in double figures - sophomore guard Amy Howe with 11 points - but had five players with at least eight points. Claire Allan had nine points, and Allison Wooley, Melissa Carl and Christina Moore all finished with eight points each. Jenna Smith had a team-high eight rebounds.

For Sewanee, Sally Jackson recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Sarah Harder, who added 10 points and five rebounds.
 

#6 HENDRIX COLLEGE 68, #3 RHODES COLLEGE 57

Hendrix College advanced to the second round of the 2003 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 68-57 win over host Rhodes College at Mallory-Hyde Gymnasium today.

Hendrix improved to 18-8 on the season and will face DePauw University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Rhodes. Rhodes finished the season with a 15-9 record. 

Erin McKenzie led all scorers with 25 points for the victorious Warriors to go along with her eight rebounds.  Deidre Wyrick added 14 points and four assists, and Maggie Harrington scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Hendrix to the first-round win.

Rhodes was led by Anna Kizer who scored a team-high 21 points. Taylor Cook, the top scoring freshman in the SCAC this season added 17 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks. Rosemary Boner finished with five points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 39 minutes of play. 

The Warriors led for nearly the entire contest, only trailing once, 2-0 at the start of the game.  Hendrix would increase their lead to as many as 20 points in the second half. Rhodes was able to draw as close as eight points down the stretch, but the Warriors ultimately came away with the 68-57 win. Hendrix shot 43.6 percent (17-39) from the field and 76.3 percent (29-38) from the free-throw line. Rhodes shot 32.4 percent (22-68) from the field and 75.0 percent (6-8) from the free-throw line.   


#2 DEPAUW UNIVERSITY 71, #7 OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY 43

DePauw advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship with a 71-43 win over Oglethorpe.

DePauw improved to 21-4 on the season and will face Hendrix College in Friday's first game of the day 1 p.m. at Rhodes. Oglethorpe finished the season with a 12-14 record.

Kim Weigle led DePauw with 14 points, while Dana Ferguson posted a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and Sarah Zondor added 10.

Oglethorpe was led by Nichole Gilleland who scored a game-high 26 while playing all 40 minutes. Heather Francourer, the all-time leading scorer in SCAC history left the game in the first half after sustaining an ankle injury early in the contest. She finished with three points in 16 minutes.

The Tigers never trailed and jumped out to a 17-3 lead midway through the first half on the way to a 32-11 halftime advantage. DePauw limited Oglethorpe to just 11.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first half and 30.2 percent for the game. The Tigers also held a 54-30 advantage on the boards and committed just six turnovers.
