(Game Box)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - DePauw University, ranked eighth in Division III, earned an spot in the NCAA Division III Championship with a 62-57 victory over third-ranked and defending NCAA champions Trinity.

DePauw improved to 25-3 and receives the SCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The brackets will be announced tonight.

Sunday's championship was DePauw's fifth SCAC title in the program's six years in the league. In 2002, the Tigers made it to the NCAA Final Four and finished third overall.

The DU Tigers were paced by the standout play of junior guard Sarah Zondor (pictured left), who was selected as the Tournament MVP. Zondor had a game-high 19 points and averaged 17.0 points per game in DePauw's three-game conference title run.

Sunday's title game was the classic that was expected as two of the nation's top-ranked teams squared off with a NCAA Tournament bid on the line.

Trinity held a 26-24 lead at the half and the lead changed hands nine times during the game. Both teams struggled to get the ball in the basket (DePauw shot 36.5% for the game, Trinity shot 35.8%), but stifling defense exhibited by both teams was the rule of the day.

In addition to Zondor's 19 points, Amy Argetsinger had 13 points and nine rebounds and Suzy Doughty added 12 points and three steals. Colleen Powers had a game-high 11 rebounds. Argetsinger joined Zondor on the SCAC All-Tournament Team.

For Trinity, which has a record of 24-3 and awaits word of an at-large bid to the tournament, Jenna Smith had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Allison Wooley followed with 12 points and five rebounds. Both Smith and Wooley were All-Tournament selections.

Joining Zondor, Argetsinger, Smith and Wooley on the All-Tournament Team was Hendrix College's Bonnie Hicks.
