MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The
Trinity Tigers advanced to the SCAC Championship game for the second straight
season as they defeated third seed Hendrix College 70-50 in the semifinals on
Saturday afternoon.
Trinity, the tournament's second seed, held a 36-29 halftime lead, and a 13-3 spurt to open the second period pushed the lead to 17 points. Hendrix, which finishes the season 19-8, never fully recovered, shooting just 22.7% (5-22) from the field in the second half.
Tara Rohde (pictured left) scored a game-high 21 points for the Tigers, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots as well. Rohde's 21 points marked the best single-game tournament total for Trinity. Jenna Smith scored seven points to go with a game-high 12 boards and five assists.
Hendrix was led by Erin McKenzie's 15 points and seven rebounds in the game, while Tori Huggins added 10 points and five rebounds to go with three steals. The Warriors shot better than 50% in the first half, cutting into a double-digit Tiger lead.
Trinity hit just 36.4% (28-77) from the field, but pulled in 28 offensive rebounds for 20 second-chance points. The Tigers also recorded 16 steals as a team, and Hendrix committed 25 total turnovers.
The Tigers will face the winner of tonight's other semifinal between DePauw and Sewanee, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
