MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The top-seeded
Trinity men's team began defense of last year's SCAC title with a 67-53
victory over Millsaps College Friday evening.
Trinity opened the game with a 20-8 run and never looked back. At halftime, the Tigers held a 31-15 advantage, holding the Majors to just five first-half field goals. Millsaps shot 22.7% from the field in the first half, while Trinity shot better than 50% in both periods.
Opening the second half, Trinity recorded steals on back-to-back possessions by Millsaps to open up a 20-point lead in the first minute of the period. The Tigers held that lead most of the way, though the Majors made a strong run late. Millsaps cut the lead to just 12 points late in the game, but could get no closer to Trinity. Trinity improves to 22-4 this season, while Millsaps closes out the 2003-04 campaign with a 5-20 record.
Jason Morris (pictured left) and Sean Devins led Trinity with 13 points each, while senior Shane Fitts led the way with five assists to go with six points and six boards. Andy Bates and Jay Riola led all players with seven rebounds each off the bench.
Tyler Warren finished with a game-high 16 points for the Majors, while Demetrus Caldwell scored 15 points. Justin LeBlanc also chipped in with 11 points for Millsaps.
Trinity moves on to the semifinals against the winner of tonight's Southwestern/DePauw game, which is set to tip off at 8:15 tonight.
