MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sewanee-Univ. of the South went on a 21-4 second half run to turn a 50-39 deficit into a 60-54 lead and went on to defeat the fourth-seeded Stormy Petrels from Oglethorpe University 75-63 in Friday night's final quarterfinal game of the 2005 SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament.

Sewanee, the tournament's fifth-seed, was the only lower-seeded team to win on Friday - men or women. The Tigers, who improved to 11-14, shot a blistering 72.7% (8-of-11) from three-point range during the second half to turn away Oglethorpe.

Joey Garcia (pictured left) came off the bench to lead the way for Sewanee with 22 points and seven rebounds and hit on 7-of-13 shots from the floor. The Tigers also got 14 points from Spencer Rowland, 13 points and six assists from Chris Eddy and 11 points from Jason Smith.

Thanks largely to Garcia, Sewanee outscored Oglethorpe 25-9 off the bench and also out-rebounded the Petrels 37-27.

Oglethorpe's Russ Churchwell ended his stellar career with a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, his league-leading 12th double-double of the season. Churchwell ends his career as the league's all-time leading scorer (1,894 points) and rebounder (849). The only other Petrel in double-figures was Andrew Tulowitzky with 13 points. Oglethorpe's and the SCAC's second-leading scorer, Eric Dickinson, did not play due to a severe ankle sprain.

Sewanee advances to Saturday's semifinal round where the Tigers will take on the tournament's top-seed, Southwestern. The Pirates defeated DePauw 70-57 earlier in the evening.

Oglethorpe ends its season with a 13-13 mark.
