The second-seeded Trinity University men began defense of its SCAC
conference crown with a solid 84-69 victory over seventh-seeded Millsaps
College Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2005 SCAC
Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Tigers (20-6) took the lead for good at 6-4 on two free throws by
Sean Devins, pushed the lead to 16-6 with 12:18 remaining and kept the
lead at or around double-digits for most of the game.
Five Trinity players scored in double figures, led by Sean Devins
(pictured) with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a
perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Jason Morris followed with 13
points and Ross Burt, James Lake and Andy Bates all had 11 points. Burt
added eight rebounds. Peter Murray finished just short of a
double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Trinity shot 56.6% from the floor for the game and held the Majors' to
36.8%. The Tigers controlled the boards with a 42-22 margin.
Millsaps, which ends its season with a 9-16 mark, was paced by Justin
LeBlanc, who had a game-high 17 points. Rodney Rogan followed with 15
points and also added eight rebounds. Tyler Warren followed with 13
points.
Trinity advances to Saturday's semifinal round and will play the winner
of today's Centre College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
match-up.
