MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
Junior center Crystal Jessee scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds
and senior forward Taylor Cook had a double-double of 15 points and a
season-high 14 rebounds to lead Rhodes College to a 65-55 victory over
Southwestern University in the final women's quarterfinal game Friday
night at St. Benedict at Auburndale.
With her 15-point performance, Cook surpassed 1,600 points scored for
her career (1,609) and is just the third women's player in league
history to hit that milestone.
With the win, the Lynx (18-7) advance to play top-seeded DePauw, who
defeated Millsaps College earlier in the evening. Tip-off is scheduled
for 7 p.m. CT.
Rhodes opened up a 33-27 halftime lead and the Pirates could never
muster much of a threat the rest of the way.
Junior forward Kendal George was the only Southwestern player in
double-figures, scoring 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds and six
steals. The Pirates finish the 2006 campaign with a overall mark of
12-14.
In addition to Jessee and Cook, Rhodes' Rachel Hettinger had 10 points
and a game-high eight assists. The senior guard now has 432 assists for
her career - good for second all-time on the SCAC all-time assists chart
and just 16 behind the league's all-time leader Lauren Turnbow of
Hendrix (1997-2000).
