MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
Seventh-seeded Hendrix College gave the second-seeded Trinity University
squad all it wanted for much of the game, but in the end, the Tigers
were just too much and pulled out the 75-66 victory in the first game of
the 2006 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament Friday afternoon at St.
Benedict at Auburndale School.
Hendrix led the entire first half and was up by nine at 30-21 with 5:11
remaining, but Trinity fought back and knotted the score at 35 at the
half.
Trinity junior guard Kate Dawson nailed a three-pointer on her team's
first possession of the second half and the Tigers never trailed again.
Senior forward Jennifer Farrar paced the Trinity attack with 14 points
and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Meghan Scholbe and Dawson each
finished with 11 points. Scholbe also added nine boards. First-year post
Krista Prato Matthews added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Trinity (19-6) advances to play the winner of today's Oglethorpe and
Rose-Hulman contest in Friday's first semifinal game at Rhodes. Tip-off
for that contest is scheduled for 5 p.m.
All five Hendrix starters scored in double-figures, led by senior guard
Cacey Smith with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Junior
forward Bonnie Hicks had 14 points and senior forward Erin McKenzie
finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Junior guard
Tori Huggins, who entered the game as the league's leading scorer at
21.9 points per game, was held to just 10 points on 3 of 12 shooting.
Huggins did, however, grab 10 rebounds.
Hendrix ends its season with a 16-10 mark.
