SCAC to contribute funds from
signed basketballs to Habitat for Humanity
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - For the fifth consecutive year, the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), in conjunction with Rhodes College
and the Rhodes College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee,
will use
its annual men's and
women's basketball tournament to help raise money for a local Memphis
charity.
This year,
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis will be the beneficiary
of the tournament's charitable efforts.
Habitat for Humanity is a
nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate
poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent
shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses around the world, providing
more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe,
decent, affordable shelter. HFHI was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller
along with his wife Linda.
At past SCAC
tournaments, the main charity event has revolved around the auctioning of
16 signed basketball - one from each team participating in the tournament.
Almost $8,000 has been raised from tournament patrons in the four-year
history of the event.
This year, the SCAC and Rhodes College want to set a new high-water mark
for money raised. Wilson Sports, which supplies the official basketball of
the SCAC Tournament, has generously agreed to donate 24 unique and
collectible basketballs emblazoned with the 2007 SCAC Tournament logo
(pictured left). These basketballs can be purchased, first come, first
served, for $150 each in the front lobby of Mallory Gymnasium at Rhodes
College beginning on Friday morning. At the time of purchase, just let the
representative at the table know which team you want to sign the
basketball.
In past auctions, signed team basketballs have gone for over $300 via the
auction process, so don't miss your chance to take home a prized
collectible from the 2007 SCAC Basketball Tournament.
