MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Centre College
never trailed and pulled away in the end to defeat Millsaps College,
75-59, in Saturday's first men's semifinal at the 2007 SCAC Basketball
Tournament at Rhodes College.
It is the second consecutive SCAC finals appearance for the Colonels and
third in the five-year history of the conference tournament.
Four Centre players scored in double-figures, led by Thomas Britt with
14. Matt Nestheide had 12, as did John Patterson, who also added 10
rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Matt Jacobson
finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Britt also had seven
rebounds and five assists.
Centre (22-4) out-shot Millsaps 44.7% to 33.3% and also outrebounded the
Majors 43-31. Centre sank 25 of 33 free throw attempts as opposed to
just 8 of 17 managed by Millsaps. A large chunk of the Colonels'
attempts came in the final five minutes when the Majors were forced to
foul in a failed comeback attempt.
Centre led 35-31 at the half, but Millsaps tied the score twice in the
second half, the final time at 39-39 on two free throws by Rodney Rogan
with 14:02 remaining. But over the next 12 minutes, the Colonels
outscored the Majors 24 to 8 to take control of the contest.
Lorenzo Bailey and Edrick Montgomery each had 14 points to lead Millsaps
(18-9) followed by Allen Odum, who had 12 points. Rogan finished with
eight points and eight rebounds. Montgomery was high man on the boards
for the Majors with nine.
