MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Top-seeded and
22nd-ranked DePauw University trimmed a 14-point deficit to three in the
final minute, but fourth-seeded Trinity University held on for a 77-72
win in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals.
Trinity improved to 16-11 and advances to Sunday's title game against
Centre. It will be the fourth championship appearance for the Tigers in
the five year history of the event.
DePauw dropped to 22-5 with the loss and awaits word of an at-large
berth into the NCAA Division III Championship.
DePauw shot 53.7% (29-54) from the floor, but 19 turnovers doomed the
Tigers.
Charles Houston led Trinity with 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting and
Brandon York followed with 12. B.J. Moon and Mike Gilb both had 11
points and Gilb added a team-high six rebounds.
Trinity shot 53.8% (14-26) in the first half in taking a 36-30 lead. The
Texas Tigers led by as many as 11 in the first 20 minutes.
DePauw cut Trinity's lead to two (36-34) early in the second half, but
Trinity went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to extend the
margin to 11 at 49-38.
With DePauw's loss, the top-seed jinx continues. Only once in the
five-year history of the SCAC Tournament has the top-seeded men's team
advanced to the championship game.
Austin Brown had a game-high 18 points to lead DePauw and Mike Moore
added a double-double of 11 points and 10 assists. The 10 assists sets a
new SCAC tournament single-game record. Ryan Werntz came off the bench
to add 11 points.
Trinity hit on 25 of 34 attempts from the stripe and DePauw managed just
4 of 10, although a large number of the attempts from Trinity occurred
as the Indiana Tigers fouled in an attempt to get back in the game.
