TRINITY’S HAMPTON, MILLSAPS’ O’BRYANT HEAD LIST
FOR 2001 ALL-SCAC FOOTBALL TEAM

Trinity University quarterback Roy Hampton and Millsaps College linebacker Matt O’Bryant were selected as the Offensive and Defensive Players-of-the-Year respectively in exclusive voting by the head coaches in the conference.

In the same voting, Brian Britt of Centre College was selected as the Special Teams Player-of-the-Year and Trinity coach Steve Mohr was tabbed as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Hampton, a 6-2, 198-pound senior from Burleson, Texas, had arguably the best season of any quarterback in the history of the SCAC. In just nine games, Hampton broke a school and conference record by throwing for 33 touchdown passes, and also led the Tiger’s to numerous other school and conference team records this season, including total points (402), points per game (44.7), most total offensive yards (4,619), total offensive yards per game (513.2), total offensive yards per play (7.3), most touchdowns (58), highest completion percentage (67.1%) and most passing TDs (36).

Hampton finished his record-breaking season with 168 completions on 251 attempts (66.9%) for 2,465 yards and 33 TDs with only seven interceptions and none after the fifth game of the season. His QB efficiency rating stands at 187.24 (second in the nation) and he averaged 273.9 yards passing per game. Hampton also carried the ball 38 times for 183 yards (4.8 yds/carry) and scored six more touchdowns.

O’Bryant, a 6-2, 235-pound junior linebacker from Ocean Springs, Miss., was the defensive leader for the Majors’ defense which led the SCAC in total defense – allowing just 258.5 yards per game. O’Bryant led the conference with 121 total tackles, and finished second in the league in tackles per game with 12.1. In addition, he had 60 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks on the season.

With the award, O’Bryant is the first Millsaps player to receive defensive Player-of-the-Year honors since three-time All-American Sean Brewer won the award in consecutive years in 1991 and 1992.

Britt, a 5-7, 165-pound senior punt returner from Danville, Ky., kept his stranglehold on the Special Teams Player-of-the-Year award as the coaches recognized him for the third-consecutive season.  Britt led the league in punt returns, averaging 15.9 yards per return, and took three back for touchdowns (a new conference single-season record). In addition, he finished tied for second in the league in kickoff returns, averaging 23.7 yards per return.

Britt, who also received All-SCAC first-team honors for his play at defensive back, finished the season with a league-leading nine interceptions. The nine picks are tied as the second-most in a single-season in the history of the SCAC.

For a record seventh time, Trinity’s Mohr was selected as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year. The Tigers won their ninth-consecutive SCAC crown this year, going 6-0 in league play and 8-1 overall. Over that span, Trinity has been to the NCAA Division III playoffs for six consecutive seasons.

Under Mohr’s guidance, the Tigers have produced a 61-8 record over the past six seasons – an 88.4 winning percentage – which is ranked third among NCAA Division III coaches over that time span.

NCAA DIVISION III FOOTBALL - SECOND ROUND
Bridgewater (Va.) 41, TRINITY 37
BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Jason Lutz hit P.J Berry for a 37-yard touchdown with :34 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Bridgewater a 41-37 victory over Trinity (Texas) in the second round of the Division III NCAA football tournament on Saturday.
The Tigers took a 37-34 lead when Todd Canion hit a 36-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining in game.
"I didn't feel comfortable at all," Trinity head coach Steve Mohr said of his team's lead with just a minute to play. "Not with the way this game was going. There was still too much time left on the clock."
The Eagles then marched 61 yards on eight plays for the winning score. Lutz started the drive with a 31-yard run before throwing the touchdown on a third-down play. (STORY)

Week 12 Results - November 17, 2001
NCAA DIVISION III FOOTBALL - FIRST ROUND
TRINITY 30,
Mary Hardin-Baylor 6
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity football team opened up the post-season with a 30-6 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (9-1) jumped out early and scored 14 points in the opening period on a Crusader team that had previously allowed only three first quarter points all season long.
Mary Hardin-Baylor came back with a score late in the first half, swinging the momentum their way for the first time in the game.  Trinity then put together a long drive, chewing up over nine minutes of the third quarter.  Though the Tigers only managed a field goal, the time off the clock was key.  Trinity added another score late in the third, and then closed the scoring with a 25-yard score fairly early in the fourth.
The Tiger defense was the real story today, shutting down a Crusader rushing game, and stifling the offense.  The Crusaders, who averaged 258 yards on the ground coming in, managed only 124 yards rushing against Trinity on Saturday.  Linebackers Casey Doran and Jason Leshikar led the Trinity Black Flag, which gave up only six first downs all game long.  Doran led all players with 13 tackles, while Leshikar had eight, including a big hit on the UMHB quarterback late in the first half.  The Tigers also allowed just 54 yards through the air in the game, eclipsing the season-low established last week.  Punter Greg Genung played a key role in the game as well, pinning the Crusaders inside the 20 yardline on four of his five punts.
Despite a tough, physical UMHB defense, Trinity still managed 347 yards of offense.  Trinity players agreed that this was the best defense they have faced this season.  Running back Jeremy Boyce carried the ball 24 times for 138 yards on the day - an average of 5.7 yards per carry.  He did all this against a defense that, on average, allowed less than 40 yards rushing in each contest.  QB Roy Hampton was 14-30 passing for 207 yards and one touchdown for the game.  He did throw three interceptions, but his three rushing touchdowns helped atone for his other mistakes.  He completed passes to five different receivers, including three passes each for four of those players.
The Tigers have earned a rematch against the South Region's top seed, Bridgewater College.  Trinity defeated Bridgewater 47-41 in overtime last season in the second round of the playoffs.  Bridgewater will host the rematch, after playing last year in San Antonio, and the game will be Saturday, November 24. Week 11 Results - November 10, 2001
TRINITY 49, MILLSAPS 0
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity Tiger football team sealed its ninth-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title with its first shutout of the season, blanking Millsaps 49-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (8-1, 6-0) scored on its first five possessions, and never looked back. The Tigers finished 6-0 in the conference, giving the team the
outright SCAC championship.
Quarterback Roy Hampton was 16-25 for 230 yards and four touchdowns - all in the first half. Hampton played only one series after halftime.  His fourth touchdown broke Trinity's single season record for touchdowns, giving Hampton 33 TD passes this season.  Hampton eclipsed the 32 touchdowns thrown by Mike Burton in 1998, when Burton was honored with the Melberger Award.
Wide receiver Jason Hunt also caught his 12th TD reception, giving him the school record for TD catches in one season, besting Bo Edwards's 1998 total of 11. (STORY)

CENTRE 34, ROSE-HULMAN 31
DANVILLE, Ky. -
Centre College rallied from a 31-24 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 34-31 and keep its NCAA Division III Playoff hopes alive at Farris Stadium on Saturday.
Senior Travis Bell scored from one-yard out, after a 31-yard run by senior Drew Mildren placed the ball on the one-yard line, with 4:58 remaining in the contest to lift the Colonels to 9-1 on the season.
(STORY)

Wabash (Ind.) College 27, DEPAUW 21
GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Jake Knott's pass on the last play of the game glanced off of Ryan Short's hands and into Kurt Casper's and the 52-yard score gave Wabash a 27-21 win at DePauw in the 108th meeting between the two schools. The last-second score erased DePauw's dramatic comeback that included a nine-play, 61-yard drive in 1:08 that culminated in Matt King's 1-yard run with 14 seconds left. (STORY)

RHODES 35, Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) 32
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
It was a thriller at Fargason Field on Saturday on the campus of Rhodes College, as the Lynx (final record 5-5; 1-5 SCAC) defeated Carnegie Mellon University (7-2 overall) for the first time in school history, by a score of 35-32.
After the visiting Tartans took a 32-28 lead with a little over a minute to play in the game, senior wide receiver Hays Mathis (Villa Rica, GA) returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to give the Lynx the victory in front of 1,000 overjoyed Lynx fans. The game marked the 5th time in history that the Lynx have played Carnegie Mellon, with the last matchup coming at home in 1997--a game the Lynx lost 13-20. Ironically, in that game the Tartans scored the winning touchdown on a 68-yard pass with just 2 seconds remaining in the game.

Week 10 Results - November 3, 2001
TRINITY 38, SEWANEE 7
SEWANEE, Tenn. -
The Trinity Tiger football team clinched at least a share of its ninth-consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title with a 38-7 win over the University of the South-Sewanee on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (7-1, 5-0 SCAC) took the early lead, and never trailed in the game.  The Tigers also clinched the SCAC's automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs.  Trinity will make its fifth-straight NCAA post-season appearance, following the completion of next week's season-ending SCAC contest against Millsaps College, in San Antonio.  It will be the final regular-season home game of the year for Trinity. (STORY)

DEPAUW 45, ROSE-HULMAN 22
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Tigers fell behind 7-0 at Rose-Hulman on the first play from scrimmage, but scored the next 35 on the way to a 45-22 win over the Engineers.
The Tigers rolled up a season-high 538 yards which marked their fifth straight game with over 400 yards. The defense limited the Engineers to just 55 rushing yards and intercepted Rose-Hulman five times. In all, the Tigers picked up seven turnovers from the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman used a trick play to jump out to the lead as quarterback Jared Tharpe caught a 45-yard pass from Josh Willis just 26 seconds into the contest. However, the Tigers rallied to score the next 35 including 28 in the first quarter.
(STORY)

MILLSAPS 28, RHODES 27
JACKSON, Miss. -
A failed two point conversion by Rhodes quarterback Gary Rockne with 5 seconds to go in the ball game sealed a thrilling homecoming victory for the Millsaps Majors Saturday at Alumni Field.   After Millsaps scored a go ahead touchdown with 3:04 remaining, Rockne led his team 83 yards on 14 plays in the next 2 minutes and 59 seconds to set up his 6 yd TD pass to wide receiver Matt Dement which led to the fateful two point conversion.
The Millsaps' win garnered the Majors their first winning season since 1996 and the seventh consecutive home win for the Majors dating back to last year's 35-28 victory over Trinity in the final game of the 2000 season. (STORY)

CENTRE 41,
Davidson (N.C.) 27
DANVILLE, Ky. -
Six first-half turnovers, including the opening three possessions, put the Davidson football team in a hole it couldn't dig out of in a 41-27 defeat to Centre College Saturday afternoon from Farris Stadium. The host Colonels improve their record to 8-1 in 2001 while the Wildcats fall to 4-4 with one game remaining in the season.
Davidson's first offensive play of the game was an unfortunate premonition of what was to come for the Wildcats in the first half. After a 21-yard runback by senior Ward Gibson on the opening kickoff to the Davidson 32, a fumble on a hand-off exchange by the Wildcats on the ensuing play gave Centre the ball with excellent field position. The Colonels capitalized as Travis Bell scored a three-yard touchdown run to the right side just 2:46 into the game. (STORY)

Week 9 Results - October 27, 2001
MILLSAPS 17, SEWANEE 7
JACKSON, Miss. -
Millsaps College ended a seven year losing streak to the Sewanee Tigers on Saturday as the Majors won a defensive struggle 17-7 at the friendly confines of Alumni Field, where the Majors have won their last six home games. (STORY)

The 19th-ranked Tigers (6-1, 4-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) haven't lost to Rhodes (4-4, 1-4) since 1992.
(STORY)

CENTRE 34, DEPAUW 31 (OT)
GREENCASTLE, Ind.
-
DePauw battled back from a 21-0 first quarter deficit only to lose to visiting Centre, 34-31, in overtime after the Colonels' Nick Zilich booted a 27-yard field goal.
The Tigers knotted the score at 28-28 on Matt King's 6-yard run with 1:47 left in the third before Centre took a 31-28 advantage on Zilich's 41-yard field goal with 11:23 left in regulation.

Week 8 Results - October 20, 2001
TRINITY 52, CENTRE 24
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
The Trinity Tigers beat back the demons of last year's upsetting road loss to Centre College with a convincing 52-24 win on Saturday afternoon, in the first-ever meeting between two SCAC schools in the top 25.
The Tigers - ranked 23rd in Division III -  improve to 5-1 this season, including 3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.  Trinity is the only remaining undefeated team in the SCAC, accomplishing the feat with a 17-point first quarter flurry to begin the game.  Trinity led 38-7 at the half, but Centre - No. 24 in the nation - came out red-hot in the third period, scoring 14 points and allowing none, to close the gap to 38-21.  The Colonels kept the heat on to start the fourth period, adding three more points, but Trinity answered that score with a 92-yard touchdown pass to regain command of the contest. (STORY)

DEPAUW 32, MILLSAPS 7

The Tigers totaled 430 yards of offense against the eighth-ranked defense in Division III as Millsaps entered the game allowing just 208 yards and 12.7 points per contest. Meanwhile, the DePauw defense held its third straight opponent to 225 or fewer yards of offense by giving up just 218 yards. (STORY)

ROSE-HULMAN 28, Case Western Reserve 27 (OT)
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - An 18-yard, fourth-down touchdown scamper by junior quarterback Jared Tharpe and a subsequent point-after-touchdown by sophomore Shawn Kujawa lifted Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to a 28-27 overtime victory over Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon at Phil Brown Field.

TRINITY PICKED TO WIN NINTH-STRAIGHT FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
IN 2001 PRESEASON VOTING

The Trinity University Tigers have been selected to win their ninth-straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) football title in 2001, based on exclusive preseason voting by the football head coaches in the conference.

Trinity shared the conference title last season with DePauw University and the University of the South-Sewanee as all three finished with 4-2 SCAC marks. For the fourth-consecutive year, the TU Tigers represented the SCAC in the NCAA football championships and made it to the national quarterfinals before bowing out to Hardin-Simmons (Tex.) University 33-30. Trinity advanced to the national semifinals in both 1998 and 1999.

In the same voting, DePauw quarterback Jason Lee, a 6-1, 210-pound senior from Indianapolis, Ind., was selected as the SCAC Preseason Offensive Player-of-the-Year. Lee, the 2000 SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year, finished last season second in the league in passing efficiency (117.0 rating), passing (243.8 yards/game) and total offense (232.8 yards/game) and led the Tigers to a share of the conference championship with six consecutive victories after opening the year 0-4. His 2,194 passing yards is the fifth-highest in a single-season in SCAC history and he set school and conference single-game records for completions (41) and attempts (72) against NCAA-playoff team Hope (Mich.) College.

There was not a clear-cut favorite among the coaches on the defensive side of the ball as 6-1, 210-pound senior linebacker Jason Geringer of DePauw and 6-0, 185-pound senior linebacker Jason Wheat of Sewanee both received two votes each from the conference’s head coaches for SCAC Preseason Defensive Player-of-the-Year. Geringer, a three-year starter and 2000 All-SCAC second-team selection, had 74 tackles (47 solo), 10 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions for the Tigers last season.  Wheat, a first-team All-SCAC selection a year ago, led the Tigers in tackles (79 total / 45 solo) for the second-consecutive year and had 17 tackles for loss. He was also selected to the 2000 Verizon Academic All-District team.
