SCAC Players-of-the-Week (9/4/07)

Men's Cross Country
NICK LEWIS OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior from Gaylord, Mich., has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1.

Lewis was the top Division III finisher (sixth overall) at the University of the South Invitational. Lewis ran 26:59 over the 8k course and helped pace the Rhodes men to a fourth place overall finish - second among Division III schools.


Women's Cross Country
JOCELYN JENKS OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., has been selected the SCAC Women's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1.

Jenks
finished 14th out of 57 runners with a personal record of 19:21 to lead the Tigers to a 14th-place finish at the Adams State Joe I. Vigil open in a field of some of the top Division II programs in the country. Jenks' personal best before Saturday was 19:32.


Field Hockey - Offensive
TERESA JOHNSTONE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a junior forward from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.

Coming back from recent knee surgery, Johnstone scored a hat trick in Saturday's 6-0 win over Oberlin - finding the net on all three of her shot attempts. Johnstone played a solid all-around game in the Centre's 2-0 win over College of Wooster on Sunday, and was quite a presence over the entire weekend as the Colonels jumped to a 2-0 start to the 2007 season.

Field Hockey - Defensive
ANN GUAGLIARDO OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior goalkeeper from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.

Guagliardo posted consecutive shutouts against Oberlin and College of Wooster over the weekend, leading the Colonels to a 2-0 start to the 2007 season. Guagliardo saved all 10 shots on goal as well as a penalty stroke behind a Colonel defense that allowed just 18 shots in total over the weekend.

Football - Offensive
BLAKE MEARS OF SEWANEE: UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a 6-0, 205-pound senior running back from Lizella, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Thursday, August 30 and Saturday, September 1.

Mears rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries in Sewanee's season-opening win over Westminster (Mo.). He averaged 5.7 yards per carry, including a long of 50 yards. This is the second straight stellar season-opening performance for Mears. Last season, he rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 109 yards, including a 73-yard scoring reception, in Sewanee's 42-35 victory over Hampden-Sydney.


Football - Defensive
ADAM HAY OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-2, 205-pound junior linebacker from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Thursday, August 30 and Saturday, September 1.

Hay
had a huge opening day helping the Colonels defeat Bluffton (Ohio) University 14-9 on the road. Hay recorded 20 total tackles, including six solo and 14 assisted tackles, in helping Centre limit the Beavers to only 179 total offensive yards, with only 63 of those coming on the ground. Hay also tallied four tackles for loss, including his first two sacks of the season in the win.

Men's Soccer - Offensive
JEREMY RIELLEY OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a senior midfielder from Evanston, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 31 through Sunday, September 2.

Rielley scored five goals in wins over Wabash (3-0) and Holy Cross (7-0) as DePauw opened 2-0 for the first time since the 2003 season. Rielley had two goals in the first half against in-state rival Wabash and found the back of the net three times in the match's first 18 minutes in Saturday's win against Holy Cross.


Men's Soccer - Defensive
NICK DASCOLI OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from Indianapolis, Ind., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 31 through Sunday, September 2.

Dascoli spearheaded the defensive effort that resulted in two shutouts over the weekend for the Tigers. DePauw's opponents recorded just five shots combined in the two contests.


Women's Soccer - Offensive
CASEY GRIER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior forward from Spring, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 31 through Sunday, September 2.

Grier
scored a pair of goals and was credited with one assist as the Pirates went 1-1 for the weekend. In the 4-0 shutout of LeTourneau, Grier had an assist on the Pirates’ second goal of the game and then put SU ahead 4-0 during the 67th minute with an unassisted goal. The following day, the Pirates faced #4 Hardin-Simmons and Grier scored the only Southwestern goal on a penalty kick with less than two minutes left in the game.

Women's Soccer - Defensive
MELISSA TAYLOR OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a senior goalkeeper from Little Rock, Ark., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 31 through Sunday, September 2.

Taylor
played the full 90 minutes in each of Hendrix's first two matches of the season - which produced a 1-0-1 start to the season for the Warriors. Taylor finished the week with five saves and just one goal allowed and earned a clean sheet in Hendrix's 3-0 defeat of Louisiana College. Her 0.50 goals against average is the best in the SCAC after the first weekend of the 2007 season.

Volleyball
ANNA CLITHERO OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a junior outside hitter from West Linn, Ore., has been named SCAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3.

Clithero
was voted MVP of the Molten Pikes Peak Challenge by the opposing coaches for leading the Tigers to four consecutive three-game victories. She finished the tournament with a .389 hitting percentage while averaging 3.90 kills and 3.50 digs per game. With the tournament title on the line against the Rochester Institute of Technology, Clithero posted her second straight double-double with match highs of 14 kills and 15 digs. She hit .619 for the match with only one hitting error on 21 attacks. She also had a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs against Northland College. With her 39 kills on the weekend, Clithero became the ninth player in the program’s history to reach the 900-kill plateau for her career, finishing the tournament with 904. She also surpassed the 800-dig mark and now ranks 12th on CC’s all-time list with 323.
