SCAC Players-of-the-Week (9/24/07)

Men's Cross Country
JULIAN BOGGS OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior from Berea, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22.

For the first time
this season, Boggs, an all-American in 2006, led the team at a meet. Boggs finished with a time of 26:32 for the 5-mile course - a first-place finish among 56 runners and the fastest time ever by a Colorado college runner on this course. Boggs led the men’s team to a first-place finish (out of six schools composed of mostly Division II and NAIA schools), and also beat his previous course record set in 2006 by 17 seconds.

Women's Cross Country
TAYLOR PENROD OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a senior from Barrington, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Women's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22.

Penrod
was the top collegiate runner (out of 181) at the Otterbein Invitational - her first individual win at the college level. Penrod covered the 6k course in 22:48, and was followed closely by three of her teammates as the Tigers won the 16 team meet.

Field Hockey - Offensive
CAROLYN MUELLER OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a junior forward from St. Louis, Mo., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Mueller
scored both goals in the Tigers' 2-1 victory on Saturday at Denison, and had two assists in the team's 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday at Oberlin, totaling six points for the weekend. Showing great speed and skill both shooting and passing, Mueller, who played all minutes, helped the offense out-shoot their opponents 29-19 for the weekend and hold a 16-12 advantage in penalty corners.

Field Hockey - Defensive
ANN GUAGLIARDO OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior goalkeeper from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Guagliardo recorded 14 saves in a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Rhodes College on Saturday. Three of Guagliardo’s saves came against break-away opportunities in the second over-time period. She also saved three of Rhodes’ four penalty stroke opportunities in the shootout to secure the win. Guagliardo now has a 5-0 record on the year and a 0.917 save percentage.


Football - Offensive
BLAKE BARMORE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 213-pound senior quarterback from Friendswood, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 22.

Barmore
completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on Saturday, leading Trinity to a 38-13 victory in the team’s 2007 SCAC opener. Barmore led the Tiger offense to its best game of the year offensively, racking up 452 yards overall. The yardage and points scored are the highest this season. The team also scored 30 or more points in consecutive games for the first time since the 2005 season. Each game this year, Barmore has improved his QB efficiency rating, which includes Saturday’s 176.87 rating against Colorado College. For the season, Barmore has completed 52 of 85 passes (61.2%) for 759 yards and seven touchdowns, throwing just two interceptions. He is averaging better than 250 yards per game through the air and has a QB rating of 158.65 on the season.

Football - Defensive
CASEY YOUNGER OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 6-1, 260-pound senior defensive lineman from Vicksburg, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 22.

Younger
tallied nine tackles (five solo), 4.0 tackles-for-loss and a career-high three sacks as the Majors' defense held Rhodes College to just 146 total yards in a 42-0 win on Saturday at home. Younger has 150 tackles for his career along with 22.5 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks.

Men's Soccer - Offensive
MATT HOSKINS OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior forward from Lexington, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Hoskins had a breakout performance, leading the #23-ranked Colonels to a pair of victories on the road. Hoskins scored three goals including both game-winners and tallied one assist for seven points on the weekend. On Friday at Hendrix, Hoskins put the Colonels ahead early with a one-time finish into the corner just two minutes into the match. Then in overtime, he scored the golden goal just 1:10 into the first period to give the Colonels the win. On Sunday at Rhodes, Hoskins assisted the third goal and scored the game-winning fourth goal to extend Centre’s record to 7-1-1 and 2-0 in the SCAC. For the season, Hoskins leads the team with 13 total points tallying five goals and three assists.


Men's Soccer - Defensive
THOMAS OWENS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Owens led the top-ranked Tigers to two SCAC wins on the road last weekend, defeating both Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern. Against Millsaps on Friday, Owens led a defense that gave up just two total shots – neither of which was on goal. On Sunday, Owens led a back line that allowed just two shots on goal against Birmingham-Southern – one of which came on a penalty kick. That PK was the only goal allowed this past weekend as Owens directed the team to 180 minutes without allowing a goal during regular play. For the season, Owens leads the defense that ranks number one in the SCAC in goals allowed, yielding just four goals in eight games played.

Women's Soccer - Offensive
CAITLIN MCGEEHAN OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a sophomore midfielder from Tulsa, Okla. has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

McGeehan
scored both goals in Hendrix's first-ever win over DePauw on Sunday. She rallied the Warriors from being down, 1-0, to winning 2-1 with three of her shot attempts finding the back of the net - including the game-winner against the regionally-ranked Tigers. Not only was Sunday the first time Hendrix had ever defeated DePauw, it was the first time the Warriors had scored a goal against the Tigers since 2001 - having been outscored 20-0 over that span.

Women's Soccer - Defensive
CAROL WICKER OF RHODES COLLEGE, a first-year defender from St. Louis, Mo., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Wicker helped secure the center of the Lynx defense in a shutout win over DePauw and a 2-1 overtime victory against Centre. On Friday against DePauw, Wicker helped hold DePauw to three shots on goal in Rhodes' first win over DePauw since a 2-1 win in 1995. The shutout was Rhodes fourth of the season. Wicker led the Lynx defense again on Sunday when she helped keep Centre to five shots on goal for the day.

Volleyball
MORGAN BALLARD OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year outside hitter/middle hitter from Sherman, Texas, and LESLIE SCHORNACK OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior middle blocker from Plano, Texas, have been named SCAC Volleyball Co-Players-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 17 through Sunday, September 23.

Ballard
put together four outstanding matches at the SCAC East/West Divisional, helping the ‘Roos to a 4-0 record including a five game win over Colorado College in which she had 19 kills in 26 attempts to go along with 11 total blocks. For the weekend Ballard had 42 kills in 62 attempts with only five hitting errors for a percentage of .597 to go along with an average of 3.5 kills per game. The freshman also had six solo blocks and 16 block assists for an average of 1.83 blocks per game.

Schornack led Trinity to four wins at the SCAC East-West Divisional last weekend, keeping the fifth-ranked Tigers unbeaten atop the conference standings this season. Schornack finished with 29 kills (2.9 per game) and a .385 hitting percentage for the weekend, also tallying 23 total blocks – an incredible 2.30 blocks per game. She recorded just four errors in 65 total attacks, and was second on the team with 44 total points for the weekend. The highlight of her weekend came against nationally-ranked Southwestern – a match in which she nearly broke the school record for blocks. Schornack recorded 13 blocks against the Pirates, coming within one block of Trinity’s all-time record for a single match. She also had 14 kills and hit a blistering .464 in the four games, making just one error in 28 total attacks. For the season, Schornack has now raised her hitting percentage to .311, totaling 144 kills (2.57 per game) and just 33 errors in 357 attacks. She leads the team in hitting percentage as well as in blocks, with 87 total blocks this season – an average of 1.55 per game.
