SCAC Players-of-the-Week (9/6/04)

Men's Cross Country
JOHN HERLIN OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior from Palacios, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Wednesday, September 1 through Saturday, September 4. Herlin - an NCAA qualifier a year ago - won the Trinity Invitational on Wednesday, marking the first time he has won the meet in four attempts. Herlin ran a personal-best (27:18) for the course on a warm day after chasing down the Division II frontrunner in the last part of the race.

Women's Cross Country
EILEEN SCHILLING OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Women's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Wednesday, September 1 through Saturday, September 4. Schilling, coming off of a great freshman cross country/track year, proved this past weekend that she plans on continuing her running success. Schilling placed fourth at the Sewanee Invitational out of 155 athletes, cruising the moderate 5,000 meter course in 19:11.05. She paced the Colonels to a third place finish out of 17 teams.

Field Hockey - Offensive
KATHARINE ETCHEN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior forward from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Wednesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Etchen had the game-winning goal against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday in the season-opening 2-0 win for the Lynx. On Sunday, she had the game-tying goal in a stunning 2-1 victory over NCAC and Great Lakes Region powerhouse The College of Wooster. For the weekend, Etchen had two goals and four points in helping the Lynx to one of their best starts in school history.

Field Hockey - Defensive
ALICE COWLEY OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior goalkeeper from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Wednesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Cowley posted a shutout on Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan in the 2-0 season-opening win, and recorded two saves in the process. The following day, Cowley was once again outstanding in the cage - allowing Wooster just one first-half goal. She recorded 13 saves in 65 minutes in net in the 2-1 win over Wooster. For the weekend, Cowley had 15 saves in 140 minutes in the cage for a save percentage of .938 and a goals against average of 0.50.

Football - Offensive
JERROLD JONES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 5-7, 189-pound junior running back from Katy, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 4. Jones opened the season in style, rushing seven times for 117 yards (16.7 yards/carry) and three touchdowns in a 52-10 victory over Austin College on Saturday night. Jones gave Trinity the early lead with a 24-yard scamper on just the second offensive play of the game for the Tigers, and then scored his second touchdown on his fourth carry of the night early in the second quarter. To start the second half, Jones made his final carry of the night his best, exploding for a 53-yard score on the second play of the third period (14:01). Jones also caught one pass for 10 yards in the game. He was second on the team in rushing last year, gaining 339 yards and three TD's on 86 carries (3.9 yards/carry).

Football - Defensive
BRYCE BECKSTROM OF ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, a 5-11, 200-pound junior defensive back from Wyoming, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 4. Beckstrom grabbed two key interceptions to help Rose-Hulman earn a come-from-behind 16-12 victory over Earlham (Ind.) College. His 24-yard return set up the Engineers' first touchdown of the game to trim the margin to 12-7, and his second pick helped Rose-Hulman boot a field goal to cut the halftime deficit to 12-10. Beckstrom added one solo tackle and one pass breakup. Rose-Hulman's defense forced three interceptions and allowed just 88 second-half yards to help the Engineers earn the win. 

Men's Soccer - Offensive
KEN BODE OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior forward from Metairie, La., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Wednesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Bode scored five goals and assisted on two others as the Lynx started the year with three wins in as many contests - including two victories at the SCAC/SLIAC Classic. Bode had two goals on four shots in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win against University of Ozarks - a 2003 NCAA Tournament participant. In Saturday's 4-0 blanking of Principia, Bode added two more goals on six shots, and on Sunday, he had one goal on five shots in the 5-0 win against Blackburn.

Men's Soccer - Co-Defensive
DAVID HORNE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a sophomore stopper back from Louisville, Ky., and SEBASTIAN GIRALDO OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from Corpus Christi, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Wednesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5.

Horne
was an integral part in reducing the Colonels' opponents to just five shots on goal and only one goal scored. And on Sunday, Horne produced offensively as well. Against Albion College, he scored two goals within two minutes of each other, including the eventual game-winner, as Centre won 3-2. On the first goal, Horne chipped the ball over an onrushing goalkeeper to give Centre the lead at the 80:29 mark. He then headed home the eventual game-winner off a corner kick at 82:05 to push the score to 3-1.
   

Giraldo played consistent defense to secure the Pirate's double overtime tie against 11th-ranked University of Redlands, and helped the team hold on to defeat Pomona Pitzer, 2-1, in overtime.

Women's Soccer - Offensive
BECKY GADDIS OF SEWANEE-UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a sophomore midfielder from Franklin, Tenn., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Gaddis had a hand in all three goals the Tigers scored this weekend. In Friday's 1-0 triumph against Guilford, she assisted on the winning goal, and in Sunday's 2-0 blanking of Piedmont, Gaddis scored both goals as Sewanee opened the 2004 season with two victories and won its own Labor Day Classic.

Women's Soccer - Defensive
LAUREN ANDREWS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior defender from Houston, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Wednesday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Andrews, a junior transfer, led the Tigers in recording two 1-0 shutouts to open the season (over Texas Lutheran and Hardin-Simmons). Not only did she play a crucial role in preventing goals in the two games, but Andrews was key to holding two opponents to just seven total shots in the two games.

Volleyball
SARAH BURGER OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a first-year middle hitter from Goshen, Ky., has been named SCAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 1 through Sunday, September 5. Burger led the attack for the Colonels as they went 4-0 and won the Earlham College Quaker Classic last weekend. The freshman had a stellar performance going attack errorless in two of the four matches. In her college debut against Bluffton, Burger tallied 10 kills with no errors on 23 attacks for a .435 attack percentage. Against Goshen, she had her best match of the weekend racking up 14 kills with zero errors on 25 attacks for a whopping .560 attack percentage and 4.66 kills per game. Burger continued to perform for the Colonels when she had 13 kills with only one error on 37 attacks (.324) against Wilmington in the championship match. Burger, who played in every game for the Colonels last week, tallied 48 kills (3.4 kills/game) with only six errors on 199 total attacks to hit .352 on the weekend. She also added an assist, four digs, five block solos and nine block assists. For her efforts, Burger was named to the All-Tournament team.
