SCAC Players-of-the-Week (9/5/06)

Men's Cross Country
ALEX MAHONEY OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior from Winnetka, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2.

Mahoney placed fifth overall out of 152 runners at the Sewanee Invitational. His time of 26:22 placed him first among all Division III runners.


Women's Cross Country
ELIZABETH EDER OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2.

Eder
won the Texas Lutheran Invitational 5K this weekend in a finishing time of 19:44. This was her first-ever individual win. Trinity's eighth runner last season, Eder has improved tremendously to become one of the team's best.

Field Hockey - Offensive
JENNY MUELLER OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior forward from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Mueller
tallied a hat trick against Transylvania (Ky.) University in Monday's 6-1 victory. Her three-goal performance was the first in Lynx field hockey history and her six points in the game tied her output from the entire 2005 season. Mueller had seven shots for the weekend to start the season with an impressive 42.9% shooting percentage.

Field Hockey - Defensive
ANN GUAGLIARDO OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a junior goalkeeper from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Guagliardo had a fantastic weekend against two regional rivals - Oberlin and Wooster - that resulted in two victories for the Colonels. She allowed just one goal in each match. On Saturday against the 2005 regional champions, Guagliardo had eight saves in 70 minutes of play, and was equally solid on Sunday, posting eight saves against The College of Wooster.

Football - Offensive
BLAKE MEARS OF SEWANEE: UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a 6-2, 206-pound junior running back from Lizella, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 2.

Mears rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 109 yards, including a 73-yard scoring reception, as the Tigers defeated Hampden-Sydney 42-35. It was Sewanee’s first victory over Hampden-Sydney in four years. Mears accounted for 258 of Sewanee’s 399 offensive yards on the day.


Football - Defensive
ADAM HAY OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-2, 194-pound sophomore linebacker from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 2.

Hay played a major part in Centre's 21-6 season-opening win. He recorded a game-high 14 tackles, including eight solo and six assists. Hay also registered his first sack of the season in helping the Colonels allow only 148 total offensive yards for the game.


Men's Soccer - Offensive
ALEX DAWSON OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year forward from Spring, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Dawson
scored a pair of goals and had an assist in Austin College’s two wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry to begin the season.  Dawson scored in the second half of a 3-0 win over UMHB and assisted on the game winner versus McMurry.  Dawson added a tally of his own to seal the victory at McMurry.

Men's Soccer - Defensive
DAVID HORNE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior defender from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 2 through Monday, September 5.

Horne
started off his senior campaign in dominating fashion, leading the Colonels to an opening game 3-0 win over visiting Hanover College. Horne, a captain and the runner-up for SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year a season ago, thwarted Hanover's direct attack all night, winning every 50/50 head ball while anchoring the Colonels defense in their first shut-out of the season.

Women's Soccer - Offensive
BECKY GADDIS OF SEWANEE: UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a senior midfielder from Franklin, Tenn., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Gaddis scored four goals and assisted on another in the Tigers' 12-0 defeat of Huntingdon (Ala.) College on Friday. Sewanee completed the weekend sweep with a 2-1 overtime victory over Texas Lutheran. The nine points scored by Gaddis are an SCAC-era single-game school record. She is just the third Tiger to score four goals in a single game since 1991.

Women's Soccer - Defensive
BROOKE SHIPLEY OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a sophomore goalkeeper from Indianapolis, Ind., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Shipley recorded two shutouts opening weekend against perennial power Washington (Mo.) as well as Fredonia State (both 1-0 wins). She totaled six saves in the two contests. Washington (Mo.) went on to post two goals in a 2-1 win over sixth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) the day after Shipley held the Bears scoreless.

Volleyball
VERONICA STEPHENS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior setter from San Antonio, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Stephens
helped the 18th-ranked Kangaroos start out the season with four straight wins at the University of Dallas Festival. Stephens averaged 13.38 assists per game in the four matches with a high of 54 assists in a 3-1 win over Dallas. She also had 10 kills and only one attacking error for a hitting percentage of .562 during the week and added nine service aces. In addition, Stephens had 21 digs during the tournament, 12 of which came against Dallas, as well as 11 blocks.
