SCAC Players-of-the-Week (9/18/06)

Men's Cross Country
JULIAN BOGGS OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a sophomore from Berea, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Men's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16.

Boggs
ran in an extremely tough meet at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Saturday - a field which was composed of seven Division I teams and 20 collegiate division teams (DII, DIII, NAIA, etc). All runners ran together with over 330+ in the field. Boggs, a returning All-America who placed 35th at this meet last year, placed 20th with a time of 26:51.3. It was Colorado College's highest individual place ever at this meet.

Women's Cross Country
WHITNEY RANSON OF RHODES COLLEGE, a first-year runner from Pickens, S.C., has been selected the SCAC Women's Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for meets run Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16.

Ranson
placed 73rd out of 286 runners this past weekend by running a cross country personal record of 19:31 at the Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern. A freshman, Ranson led her team as the top runner for the second meet in a row as the Lynx placed 15th out of 34 teams. As the sole Division III team in the meet, Ranson lead all DIII runners.

Field Hockey - Offensive
HILARY MAST OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior forward from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

Mast scored her fourth goal of the season in the Lynx 3-1 win over Wittenberg on Saturday. She scored the goal, the game-winner, on a deflection off the goalie after a great cross from Elizabeth Erny. For the game, Mast contributed five of Rhodes’ 12 shots. The 2004 SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year and a three-time All-Region selection, Mast now leads the conference in total points with 10 and is the second-leading scorer in Lynx field hockey history.

Field Hockey - Defensive
LEIGH CLASBY OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior sweeper from Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and JACKIE SMITH OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a sophomore midfielder from Upper Arlington, Ohio, have been selected the SCAC Field Hockey Defensive Co-Players-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

Clasby led the Rhodes defense, which only allowed one goal in this weekend’s 3-1 victory at Wittenberg. The Lynx successfully defended all eight penalty corner attempts by Wittenberg. A four year starter, Clasby is one of the scrappiest and hardest working defenders in the conference, and Rhodes relies on her experience and leadership in the backfield with two freshmen starters on the defensive end of the field.

Smith, whose hustle all game was impressive, was a key component to DePauw’s excellent play in the second half that was critical in keeping Wooster from equalizing in the Tigers’ 2-1 victory. The win was the first of the 2006 season for DePauw, which plays three times this week, including SCAC matches at Sewanee and at Rhodes.

Football - Offensive
TYSON ROY OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a 5-7, 188-pound junior running back from Baton Rouge, La., has been selected the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 16.

Roy, after sitting out last week’s game against Louisiana College, accounted for 266 of the Majors’ 466 total yards, carrying the ball 14 times for 119 yards (8.4 yards per carry) with three touchdowns. He also hauled in eight catches for 147 yards, with the longest being a 54-yard connection from quarterback Burt Pereira. For the season, Roy is averaging 73.5 rushing yards and 93.5 receiving yards per game. Despite missing a game, his 187 yards receiving is the second-highest total in the league.

Football - Defensive
JEFF JONES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a 6-1, 194-pound linebacker from Houston, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, September 16.

Jones came off the bench - replacing injured starter Philip Kownslar early in the game - and put forth one of the best individual defensive efforts of the year for the Tigers. Jones finished tied for second on the team with eight tackles, but his real highlights were two second-half interceptions. Jones took his first career interception back 44 yards for a touchdown, then stepped in front of a Redlands receiver right at the sideline for his second. For the season, Jones has 10 tackles in three games played, but had little significant action until Saturday.

Men's Soccer - Offensive
ROBERT C'DEBACA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior midfielder from Albuquerque, N.M., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

C'debaca scored the first and last goals of the game in TU's 4-1 non-conference win over Southwestern on Friday night. The game was the home opener for the top-ranked Tiger men's team. For the season, C'debaca has scored three goals and one assist to tie for second on the team with seven goals.

Men's Soccer - Defensive
CHRIS FREIDENSTEIN OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from Memphis, Tenn., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

Freidenstein anchored the Petrel defense that only gave up one goal against a very feisty Sewanee side on their home turf. Freidenstein also scored the first goal of the game on a smashing header from a corner kick from Josh Rosendahl to help Oglethorpe to its first SCAC win of the season.

Women's Soccer - Offensive
MARY BETH ROBINSON OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a senior forward/midfielder from Carmel, Ind., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

Robinson scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the team's other score in Saturday's 2-1 victory over 22nd-ranked Ohio Wesleyan. DePauw (5-0-0) is ranked eighth in this week's NSCAA Top 25 national rankings.

Women's Soccer - Defensive
LAUREN ANDREWS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from Houston, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Monday, September 17.

Andrews helped hold William Smith to just four shots in a 2-1 win in Trinity’s home-opening, overtime win on Saturday afternoon. Andrews and the Tiger defense have a GAA of 0.74, giving up just four goals in five games – and only two in the past four contests. For the season, Andrews also has two goals – including one game-winner.

Volleyball
MARIE BRUCE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior setter from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17.

Bruce was named the Most Valuable Player at the Southwestern Invitational this past weekend as she helped guide the Pirates to a 3-1 mark. The junior setter recorded 154 assists in the four matches and averaged 11.0 assists per game. She dished out 41 assists in Southwestern’s 3-1 victory over then fifth-ranked Emory (Ga.) University. For the weekend, Bruce also added 45 digs, seven kills and six service aces for the ninth-ranked Pirates.
