Offensive
KYLE FELIX OF TRINITY
UNIVERSITY, a
6-3, 205-pound first-year designated hitter from Woodside, Calif., has been named the
SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week
for games played Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30.
Felix led the Tigers in hitting last week, sparking the team to a 5-0
record that included a four-game weekend sweep at Austin College.
Felix hit .556 (10-18) for the week, cracking a double, a triple, and two
home runs in the five games. He scored six runs and led the team with 11 RBI and
19 total bases. He had eight RBI in Saturday’s doubleheader at Austin College.
Felix finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.056 and an
on-base percentage of .571. Both of his home runs were hit over the weekend
against Austin College.
For the season, Felix is hitting .330 (30-91) with 19 runs and 29
RBI. The 29 RBI is good for second on the team, though nearly 40% of those were
driven in this week. He has totaled five doubles and two triples, as well as
five home runs – which is also second on the team.
Baseball - Pitching
BRIAN OATES OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY,
a 6-3, 205-pound senior right-hander from
Huntsville, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for
games played from Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30.
Oates led the Tigers to a 5-0 record last week, earning two of the
victories himself and recording a team-best 16 total strikeouts. He was 2-0
with an ERA of 1.80 last week, giving up just two earned runs in 10 innings of
work. The highlight of his week was in the series opener at Austin College, in which
Oates struck out a career-high 15 batters to lead the team to a 6-2 win on
Friday. The 15 strikeouts were a team season high, as well as the fourth-highest
strikeout total in school history. He also earned the win against McMurry
earlier in the week, pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief to put the
Tigers in position to win that game.
For the season, Oates is 4-1 with an ERA of
3.52 in eight appearances. The complete game this weekend was his first of the
year – third of his career – and he has yielded just 18 earned runs in 46
innings. Oates is also the team leader with 60 strikeouts this year, and is now
fifth in Trinity history with 234. That total also puts him in ninth in
SCAC history.
Softball -
Offensive
SARA HUNTER OF HENDRIX
COLLEGE, a junior third baseman from Corona, Calif., has been
selected the SCAC Softball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from
Monday, March 24 through Sunday, March 30.
Hunter
went 9-for-12
(.750) with three runs scored, three doubles, one homer, three walks and four RBI on the
week. Her two-run dinger in the third inning of the night cap against
Rhodes put Hendrix ahead for the team's second SCAC win of the year. In
the field, Hunter committed no errors
with eight put outs and eight assists.
Softball - Pitching
MEGAN SOULTZ OF DEPAUW
UNIVERSITY, a
sophomore right-hander from Carmel, Ind., has been selected the SCAC
Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 24
through Sunday, March 30.
Soultz
went 6-0 on the week with an ERA of 0.36. She allowed just two earned runs in
39.1 innings of work and struck out 49 batters while allowing only four free
passes.
For the season, Soultz is 19-1 with an ERA of 0.82 in 127.1 innings of
work. Her 19 wins is already the second-most in a single-season in
SCAC history - tying her total from last season. She has yielded
just 74 hits in her 22 appearances, giving up 18 total runs – 15 of which have been earned. Soultz has struck out
143 batters and opponents are hitting just .168 against her this season.
Men's Track & Field - Track
ZACH BRUSH OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY,
a first-year from Katy, Texas,
has been
selected the SCAC Men's Track Athlete-of-the-Week for meets
conducted Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29.
Brush
broke the Trinity school
record in the 800 meter run at the Rice Bayou Classic this weekend
by running 1:54.11. He broke the record held by Matt Kovacs from
2003 of 1:54.49. Brush also ran his second 1500 meter race
ever and hit a 4:02.27. The first-year runner finished up the day by
anchoring the Tigers' 4 x 400 relay team.
Men's Track & Field - Field
CHRIS BAER OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY,
a sophomore from Shiner, Texas,
has been
selected the SCAC Men's Field Athlete-of-the-Week for meets
conducted Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29.
Baer
broke the school record and
qualified provisionally for the NCAA’s in the javelin by throwing
192’4” (58.62) at the Rice Bayou Classic. The old school record was
held by Kels Farmer at 191’03 and had stood since 1999.
Women's Track & Field - Track
LAURA
BROEDERDORF OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a junior from Mountain Home,
Ark., has been
selected the SCAC Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Week for meets
conducted Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 29.
Broederdorf
ran 38:10.2 (hand timed) to win
the 10,000m at the Rhodes Invitational over the weekend. Alone the
entire way, victory was never in doubt, as Broederdorf lapped
second place several times en route to a 4 minute victory. The
effort was just 18 seconds off her school record from 2006, only 30
from a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships, and is at
the top of the outdoor performance list.
Women's Track & Field - Field
BEKKA RUSS OF RHODES COLLEGE,
a junior from Franklin, Texas,
has been
selected the SCAC Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Week for meets
conducted Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 29.
Russ
won the heptathlon at the Rhodes
Multi-Event Competition held March 27-28, as she bested six other
competitors. Russ totaled 4,017 points in her second ever
heptathlon competition, and defeated the all-America seventh place
finisher from the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Russ'
point total is 83 points from the NCAA provisional mark of 4,100
points and her throw in the javelin of 32.58m (106’11") moved her to
second place on the conference performance list.
