SCAC Players-of-the-Week (4/7/08)

Baseball - Offensive
MICHAEL MURPHY OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a 5-11, 185-pound junior catcher from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Murphy
had another strong SCAC performance this past weekend as the Pirates took three of four from Austin College. Murphy extended his current hitting streak to nine games while going a combined 9-for-16 at the plate, good for a .563 average. The junior catcher totaled 10 RBI in the four games and scored four runs. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Murphy was 4-for-5 with six RBI, three runs scored and a pair of home runs. Murphy now has 11 doubles (tied for 10th in the SCAC) and six home runs (tied for fourth in the SCAC) on the year and 33 runs batted in (seventh in the SCAC). He raised his season average from .324 to .355 (15th in the SCAC).

Baseball - Pitching
JOHN HERBERT OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a 6-0, 185-pound senior right-hander from Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Herbert came up big once again for the Colonels starting both ends of a doubleheader sweep against Oglethorpe Saturday, April 5. Herbert tossed a two-hit complete game in the 3-1 series opener, allowing one unearned run for his fifth complete game of the season. The senior pitcher then started game two and threw two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out the side in his final inning of the day in an 8-6 win. His seven strikeouts on the day gave him 67 for the season (tied for second in the SCAC) in only 58.0 innings of work and tied a Centre single season record for strikeouts. Herbert also lowered his team-leading ERA from 2.20 to 1.86 (second in the SCAC) in not allowing an earned run in nine-innings of work. He is now 5-0 (tied for fifth in wins in the SCAC) on the season in eight outings.


Softball - Offensive
ASHLEE ANTON OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a first-year first baseman from Worth, Ill., and MICHELLE GOSSEIN OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior third baseman/catcher from Albuquerque, N.M., have been selected the SCAC Softball Offensive Co-Players-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Anton broke the school's single-season record with her fifth home of the year in the series finale against Centre on Sunday. Anton hit .705 (12-17) over the final six games of the week and was 7-for-11 (.636) in the Centre series with a slugging percentage of 1.545. For the week, Anton was 12-for-22 (.545) with one double and three home runs. She scored eight runs, drove in 13 and finished with a 1.000 slugging percentage.
For the season, Anton is batting .384 (11th in the SCAC) and slugging .628 (sixth in the SCAC) with 35 RBI (second in the SCAC), 54 total bases (fourth in the SCAC) and five home runs (tied for third in the SCAC).

Gossein
led Trinity to a four-game SCAC sweep at Colorado College last weekend, keeping the team undefeated and atop the SCAC West Division standings. Gossein was 10-for-16 (.625) at the plate, scoring five runs and finishing with 11 RBI. She had a double, a triple, and two homers for 19 total bases (1.188 slugging %). In Saturday’s 9-7 win that Trinity scored five runs in the sixth to win, Gossein had a record-tying two homers to push the team to the win. For the season, Gossein is now second on the team with a .372 batting average (13th in the SCAC), collecting 35 hits in 94 at-bats. She leads the team with 27 RBI (fourth in the SCAC) and 62 total bases (second in the SCAC), scoring 17 runs. Her six home runs (second in the SCAC) are a new Trinity record for a single season, and she has also tied Trinity’s career record for homers. Gossein also has seven doubles (tied for sixth in the SCAC) this season, and this weekend marked her first triple of the year.

Softball - Pitching

SARA BOWEN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a first-year right-hander from Nolensville, Tenn., has been selected the SCAC Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, March 31 through Sunday, April 6.

Bowen
pitched 31 1/3 innings on the week, and despite going 0-3, set a new NCAA Division III single-game record in Saturday's 13-inning loss to Austin College. In that historic game, Bowen struck out 23 batters, breaking the DIII single-game record of 21 set by Jennifer Martinez of St. Joseph's (Long Island). On the week, Bowen posted a 1.34 ERA and fanned 43 hitters in 31.1 innings of work. For the season, Bowen is 2-7 with an ERA of 3.41 (ninth in the SCAC) in 61.2 innings of work. She leads the team with 89 strikeouts (second in the SCAC) and opponents are hitting just .234 off her (fifth in the SCAC).

Men's Track & Field - Track
CHASS ARMSTRONG OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from Boerne, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Track Athlete-of-the-Week for meets conducted Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5.

Armstrong
ran an incredible 1,500 meter personal best and new school record of 3:54.83 at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational this weekend. His mark is also an NCAA provisional mark and currently ranks him third in the nation. Armstrong was the first collegiate runner (2nd overall) in a field of 68 1,500 meter runners.

Men's Track & Field - Field
JERRY MALDONADO OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a sophomore from Rockwall, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Field Athlete-of-the-Week for meets conducted Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5.

Maldonado cleared 2.05 meters (6 feet 8.75 inches) in the high jump to win Harding's Bison Invitational. The mark is a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships and places Maldonado fourth on the national list. He is first on the conference performance list.


Women's Track & Field - Track
LAUREN REICH OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a junior from Mesa, Ariz., has been selected the SCAC Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Week for meets conducted Friday, April 4 through Saturday, April 5.

Reich finished second in the 1500m at the DePauw Invitational with a provisional qualifying time of 4:38.90. Her time ranks second all-time at DePauw. Reich was also third in the 800m with a time of 2:21.93.
