WEEK 5

SCAC Women's Soccer
Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 22nd through Sunday, Sept. 28th)

EVEY GANNAWAY OF SEWANEE-UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a senior forward from Collierville, Tenn., has been selected as the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 22 through Sunday, September 28.

Gannaway scored three goals on the weekend as Sewanee shut out both Hendrix and #12 Rhodes on the Mountain this weekend.

Gannaway had two goals versus the Warriors and one against the Lynx on Sunday. The Tigers are 5-2-1 so far and are 3-1 in the league.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman Jessica Harris of Millsaps helped the Majors to their first back-to-back road wins since 1996 with wins over Austin and the University of Dallas.  Harris moved into a t-first in the league in points (17) with teammate Bobbi Jones after netting the game-winner in the 86th minute to defeat the ‘Roos 1-0 and scoring another goal in a 4-1 win at Dallas. First year forward Abigail Loar of Trinity scored a pair of goals in the only game of the week for the Tigers – a 6-0 win over Texas Lutheran University on Friday night. Senior midfielder Michelle Story of Hendrix scored the Warriors’ lone goal in their first SCAC win of 2008. Diana Buss, Senior Midfielder of Rhodes had a goal and two assists against Oglethorpe. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Madison of Southwestern, was key to the Pirates' dominating play over the weekend. Two of her goals early in the game against Schreiner pushed Southwestern into the comfort zone, and Madison followed a game-tying assist with the eventual winning goal against Texas Lutheran on Sunday. Freshman Emelie Johansson of DePauw was a major contributor to the Tigers attack this week. Senior forward Allison Terry of Centre scored the game winning goal with only one second remaining to defeat Capital University over the weekend. Terry also had an assist to go along with her goal. Austin College and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.

Defensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 22nd through Sunday, Sept. 28th)

ELIZABETH SOOBY OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a senior goalkeeper from Shreveport, La., has been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 22 through Sunday, September 28.

Sooby improved to 12-2-1 in her last 15 starts in net with a combined 12 saves over the weekend in wins over Austin and the University of Dallas.

Sooby is surrendering just 0.76 goals-per-game in 2008 with the 1-0 shutout win of the ‘Roos marking the 11th clean slate of her career. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Elledge of
Austin College performed admirably in a pair of heartbreaking losses over the weekend, giving up just one late goal with three minutes remaining in a 1-0 loss to Millsaps while making five stops, and making three more saves in a tough overtime loss to Centre. Senior goalkeeper Brooke Shipley of DePauw recorded 11 saved in ninety minutes of play in a 2-0 loss at Chicago. Junior goalkeeper Rosie McAuley of Centre recorded 2 saves on the outing and allowed only two goals by Capital University who was ranked No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Kjolhede of Southwestern contributed on both sides of the field over the weekend's games by creating attacking opportunities and protecting against opponent drives into Pirate territory. Kjolhede scored a goal, an assist, and took 7 corner kicks during her 94 minutes of play over the weekend. Colleen Callaghan, junior defender of Rhodes had an assist and was also a major factor in the Lynx shutout against Oglethorpe. Junior defender Lacy Morrison of Sewanee anchored a Tiger defense that only gave up five shots on goal all weekend with two shootouts. Sophomore defender Danika Wright of Trinity led the Tiger defense in a 6-0 win over Texas Lutheran University on Friday night, recording the team’s second consecutive shutout. Hendrix and Oglethorpe did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 4

SCAC Women's Soccer
Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 15th through Sunday, Sept. 21st)

ERIN MENARD OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior forward from LaGrange, Ky., and BRIDGET NICHOLSON OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior midfielder from Plano, Texas, have been selected as the SCAC Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Players-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 15 through Sunday, September 21.

Menard scored three goals this weekend and earned six points as the Colonels posted two SCAC victories against Oglethorpe (3-1) and Sewane (2-1).

Menard now has five goals on the season and needs just four more to break into the SCAC's top five career scorers list.

Nicholson scored the game-winning goal against #22 Trinity University giving Rhodes their first victory against the Texas Tigers since the 1991 season.

It was the junior's first goal of the season.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior forward Holly Messamore of Austin College scored what would prove to be the game winner just under seven minutes in against the Crusaders and then assisted on another goal less than five minutes later as the ‘Roos put six goals in the net in the first half. Senior forward Katy Phillips of DePauw scored Tigers’ first goal and assisted on the third in 3-0 win over Oglethorpe. Sophomore forward Amy Douglas of Southwestern took full advantage of both her shots against Hendrix on Friday, scoring two goals on her way to bringing home a 3-1 win. Junior defender Meredith Harris of Millsaps scored two second half goals, including the game-winner off a free kick in the 86th minute from 55-yards out that sailed over the keeper’s head, to lift Millsaps to its first ever win over cross-street rival Belhaven, 3-2, on Friday night. Junior defender Julia Zangirolami of Trinity scored a pair of goals and an assist over the weekend to lead Trinity’s women’s soccer team to a 1-1 start to its SCAC season. Hendrix, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

Defensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 15th through Sunday, Sept. 21st)

KATY JOYNER OF RHODES COLLEGE, a senior defender from Dallas, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 15 through Sunday, September 21.

Joyner was a key member in both of Rhodes’ victories this past weekend.  The Lynx were able to earn their fourth and fifth shutouts of the season with a pair of 1-0 wins over #22 Trinity and Southwestern. 

Joyner has also been a key contributor in the three straight shut-out victories for the Lynx, two of which are against nationally ranked opponents - #9 Emory and #22 Trinity.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman defender Cleo Chappell of Trinity led Trinity’s defense in allowing just one goal in two games over the weekend, finishing with a 1-1 record to open SCAC play. Sophomore defender Sarah Holifield of Southwestern continued to hold opponents' offensive efforts at bay as she protected the goal against a combined 24 shots for the weekend. Senior defender Jacki Ponder of DePauw led a defense that allowed just two goals on the weekend including a 3-0 shutout of Oglethorpe. Sophomore defender Chelsea Parker of Austin College was a big part of the ‘Roo defense that held the University of Dallas without a shot in a 7-0 victory on September 19 and even got into the scoring column, netting the lone second half goal off of a corner kick as the ‘Roos improved to 5-2 on the year. Junior goalkeeper Rosie McAuley of Centre recorded 6 saves on the weekend, helping the Colonels claim two conference victories. Hendrix, Millsaps, Oglethorpe and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 3

SCAC Women's Soccer
Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 8th through Sunday, Sept. 14th)

JESSICA HARRIS OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a freshman midfielder from Dallas, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8 through Sunday, September 14.

Harris added to a solid freshman campaign this weekend, picking up her second goal of the season to go along with three more assists to move first on the team with six total assists.

In a 6-0 win over Division I Alcorn State,
Harris
had a goal and an assist in the opening 21 minutes to pace the Majors to a win, while adding two more assists on Sunday in a 3-1 win over Piedmont.  Her second assist to teammate Bobbi Jones was the game-winner.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore forward
Lydia Nash of Hendrix scored the Warriors only goals this week. She scored Hendrix’s game-winning goal against University of the Ozarks on Sept. 8 to give the Warriors their first 3-0 start since 2002. Nash then scored her second goal of the season off a penalty kick late in the second half against University of Texas at Dallas on Sept. 13. Sophomore forward Shannon Dougherty of Oglethorpe scored her third goal of the season in a 3-0 defeat of Clearwater Christian. Dougherty has scored a goal in every game this season helping Oglethorpe tie the schools record for the best start ever. Junior forward Annie Gunter of Austin College had a big weekend for the ‘Roos as they swept Maryville and Fontbonne on a road trip to St. Louis.  Gunter scored a pair of goals, one against Maryville and then the game winner in a 1-0 victory over Fontbonne on Sunday, and has a team-best four goals this season. Senior Forward Jessie Cassidy of Rhodes scored the lone goal in the 2-1 defeat of Rhodes against cross town rival Christian Brothers University. First-year midfielder Lauren Hannan of DePauw
scored the Tigers' first goal in a 2-2 tie with Ohio Wesleyan. Centre, Sewanee and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award, and Trinity did not play.


SCAC Women's Soccer
Defensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 8th through Sunday, Sept. 14th)

NICOLE WENDSCHLAG OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a senior defender from Lexington Ky., and BECCA CLARIN OF RHODES COLLEGE, a junior goalkeeper from Clarendon Hills Ill., have been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8 through Sunday, September 14.

In its game against No. 6 Wittenberg University, Centre allowed only three shots on goal, and Wendschlag was certainly a contributing factor to this accomplishment.

Wendschlag
also contributed on the offensive side of the ball by scoring the tying goal in the 80th minute of play. The match would end deadlocked at 1-1 after two scoreless overtime periods.

Clarin recorded a shutout against the nation's ninth-ranked team, Emory (Ga.) University, to help Rhodes College to the 1-0 upset victory.

With seven saves in the match, Clarin picked up her first solo shutout of the season.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior defender Meredith Harris of Millsaps netted her first two goals of the season, including the game-winner over Alcorn State, from her defender position. Freshman defender Jordan Weaver of Oglethorpe has played every minute of every game and anchored the defense in the teams first shutout since October 21, 2006. Sophomore center back Sarah Holifield of Southwestern has played the entirety of every game this season for the Pirates, orchestrating the defensive line for the team. She's shown an improved ability in clearing balls from attackers and taking them out from the air and will continue to play a crucial role in Southwestern's defense as they begin conference play. Freshman defender Rhea Bermel of Austin College had a strong weekend in helping the ‘Roos post a pair of shutout victories against Maryville and Fontbonne, clearing the ball several times when both teams were threatening, including making a game-saving play when she knocked the ball away on what looked to be a sure goal to help preserve the 1-0 victory over Fontbonne. Senior back Jacki Ponder of DePauw
spearheaded DePauw's defensive effort which allowed Ohio Wesleyan just nine shots in a 2-2 tie. Hendrix and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award, and Trinity did not play.


WEEK 2

SCAC Women's Soccer
Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 1st through Sunday, Sept. 7th)

BOBBI JONES OF MILLSAPS COLLEGE, a senior forward from Homewood, Ala., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 1 through Sunday, September 7.

Jones had a breakout weekend for Millsaps in helping the Majors get out to their best overall start in 20+ years.  The Homewood, Ala.,  native had four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points, recording a
hat-trick in the 5-0 win over Agnes Scott on Sunday – the first for the Majors since Amanda Paschall had three goals against Louisiana College on Sept. 11, 2004.

On Friday night against Louisiana College,
Jones
had a pair of assists in addition to a goal in a 5-1 win.  She actually scored two goals in the win over LC, but her second was awarded a corner kick after going through the left side of the net and out the other side.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior forward Molly Buss of
Rhodes scored the game winning goal in the Lynx win over ETBU.  Despite dominating the game Rhodes was unable to put the ball in the Tigers net until the 108th minute when Buss calmly finished off a pass from freshman forward Julia Clapper. Senior forward Erin Menard of Centre connected only 53 secs into the overtime period to score the game winning goal. Centre defeated Kenyon 2-1. Menard’s goal is the 51st of her career and brings her closer to breaking into the SCAC leading scorer’s top five. To accomplish this feat, she needs seven goals. Audrey Jernigan senior forward of Sewanee scored two goals in Sewanee's 2-0 shutout of Guilford on Sunday. First year forward Abigail Loar of Trinity had a goal and an assist as Trinity went 1-0-1 in its first road weekend of the season. Junior forward Caitlin McGeehan of Hendrix scored the Warriors’ final goal against LeTourneau University on Sept. 5.  McGeehan put it underneath a charging keeper in a one-on-one situation. Austin College, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.

Defensive Player-of-the-Week
(For matches played Monday, Sept. 1st through Sunday, Sept. 7th)

BROOKE SHIPLEY OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper from Indianapolis, Ind., has been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 1 through Sunday, September 7.

Despite dropping both games over the weekend, Shipley recorded 19 saves (9 against Wittenberg, 10 against Emory) and allowed just two goals in 184:57 of play in 1-0 losses to eighth-ranked Emory and 12th-ranked Wittenberg.

The Wittenberg goal came in overtime while the Emory goal was a penalty kick which came just after she saved a previous penalty kick attempt.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First year goalkeeper Allison Mosley of Hendrix posted her second straight shutout in the Warriors’ 2-0 win over LeTourneau University on Sept. 5.  Mosley racked up seven saves against the Yellow Jackets to back up a Hendrix defense that has allowed just seven shots on goal in its two wins of 2008. Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Sooby of Millsaps improved to 6-1-1 in her last eight starts and 3-0 on the year in a pair of easy wins on Friday and Sunday against Louisiana College and Agnes Scott. Senior defender Diana Buss of Rhodes was asked to step into the back line for the Lynx from her usual position in the midfield and helped the Lynx earn a tie against Hardin-Simmons and a shutout victory over ETBU.
Senior goalkeeper Eryn Snyder of Southwestern racked up an incredible seventeen saves over the weekend, with 11 throughout regulation time and two overtimes against UT-Dallas. With the team still getting used to the new coaching style and a fairly young defensive line, Snyder held the back together through two difficult games. First year goalkeeper Katie Cowan of Trinity led the Tigers to a 1-0-1 record over the weekend, holding a GAA of 1.22 in more than 220 minutes in goal. Austin College, Centre, Oglethorpe, and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.


WEEK 1

(For matches played Friday, Aug. 29th through Sunday, Aug. 31st)

RYANNE AROLA OF OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, a junior midfielder from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31.

Arola scored a pair of goals and was credited with an assist in Oglethorpe’s 4-1 win over Agnes Scott, securing the first win for the Petrels since 2006. With five points and two goals on the weekend, Arola sits at the top of the conference in both statistical categories.

Arola is the first Petrel to be named SCAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week since 2004 and just the third selection in school history.


Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior midfielder Leslie Robichaux of Millsaps picked up right where she left off in 2007, scoring the game-winning goal for Millsaps in the 62nd minute to pick up her first points of the year and the Majors' first win (1-0) over ETBU.  She has now scored a goal in four-straight games dating back to last season and 5 of 6 overall. Senior forward Erin Menard of Centre scored in the 10th minute of the game against Denison to give the Colonels the lead.  This was a proud moment for Erin as it was her 50th career goal.   She now needs 8 goals to break into the SCAC top 5 career goal scorers. Senior midfielder Helen Heres of Austin College had a great start to the season in a 5-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, scoring a goal and adding a pair of assists as the team dominated from start to finish.  Heres assisted on the games two first goals and scored the fourth goal of the game. Junior midfielder Andi Miller of Southwestern, whose two goals (one unassisted) pushed Southwestern into the comfort zone for the game and doubled her previous career goal record. Junior midfielder Michelle Grambeau of Trinity scored a goal and contributed three assists to open the season for the Tiger women’s soccer team, which finished 1-1 against a pair of teams from Wisconsin. Junior forward Kate Burnett of Hendrix scored the Warriors’ first goal of the season at the 64:40 mark against Louisiana College on Saturday.  Burnett led Hendrix with six shots on the day. Senior forward Melanie Sharry of Rhodes led the Lynx offense in wins over Texas Lutheran and UT-Dallas scoring her first goal of the season against UTD. Sophomore midfielder Julia Drummond of DePauw assisted on first goal and scored the second in 2-0 win over Eastern (Pa.) in season opener. Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.

(For matches played Friday, Aug. 29th through Sunday, Aug. 31st)

AMELIA WILDEBORG OF HENDRIX COLLEGE, a sophomore defender from Rogers, Ark. has been named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31.

Wildeborg was part of a Hendrix defense that not only didn’t allow Louisiana College an attempt at the goal, but did not even allow the Wildcats to get off a shot in Saturday’s 3-0 shutout.

Wildeborg is just the fifth different player in Hendrix history to be named SCAC Player of the Week in women’s soccer.

Hendrix has started with a win in two of its last three seasons and new head coach Jim Evans is excited about what lies ahead for his Warriors.


Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior defender Robyn Brooks of Trinity had a goal and two assists as a defender over the weekend, including the game-winning goal in the season opener on Friday night. Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Sooby of Millsaps picked up four saves, including a key save with seconds remaining in regulation, to help the Majors win their season-opener at ETBU 1-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Elledge of Austin College started the season strong as she shut out Mary Hardin-Baylor in a dominant 5-0 Austin College victory.  Elledge saved both shots that came her way in the game. Senior defender Jacki Ponder of Depauw led the defense which blanked Eastern (Pa.) and allowed NAIA seventh-ranked Cal Baptist just two second-half goals. Freshman goalkeeper Virginia Zakas of Sewanee started in goal Sunday, allowing only one goal in the first half and then took the field in the second, scoring a goal as Sewanee one-upped DII Cristian Brothers University on Sunday. Senior center back Katy Joyner of Rhodes anchored the Lynx defense in victories over Texas Lutheran University and The University of Texas at Dallas during which Rhodes only allowed 8 shots on goal. Centre, Oglethorpe, and Southwestern did not nominate anyone for the award.
