AUSTIN COLLEGE AND RHODES COLLEGE SOFTBALL TEAMS UP FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Student Athlete Advisory Committees and softball teams from Rhodes College and Austin College teamed up last week to engage in two different community service projects which culminated on Sunday afternoon.

Austin College participated in a Home Run for Hope competition, which generated over $3,200 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. The coaches and team delivered the money to St. Jude and toured the hospital prior to Saturday’s games with Rhodes.

The Rhodes College Student Athlete Advisory Committee has worked all semester on a donation drive for the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA), which serves low income families and individuals, senior citizens, and other members of the Memphis Community with needs.  The Rhodes SAAC collected canned goods, books, toys, and household items which will be used for the MIFA Food Bank and at various after school programs and housing programs.

Items were collected not only from Rhodes student-athletes, fans, and parents, but also from student-athletes, fans and parents from visiting teams.

Donations were accepted during a home track meet on March 29 which featured 14 teams, at the baseball games with Birmingham Southern and during the softball games with Austin College this past weekend. Rhodes and the visiting teams collected several large baskets of goods which will be donated to MIFA.
