Trinity wins 2006 Softball title in dramatic fashion

SEWANEE, Tenn. -
Sunday's championship game between Trinity University and DePauw University showcased excellent pitching (12 combined strikeouts), three home runs and late inning heroics. Trinity led 5-0, DePauw got off the deck and rallied with two dingers to draw even late, only to have Trinity win it in the eighth.

This is the first championship game to go beyond regulation (7 innings) in the eight-year history of the sport.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh and trailing by two runs, DePauw's Kristy
Mahon tripled to right field and Lauren Rees followed with a homer to left field to tie the game.

But in the top half of the first extra frame, Trinity scored three times, with Melissa
Johnson's deep two-run home run to center field being the big blow. Winning pitcher Erin Mulvey retired the Indiana Tigers in the bottom of the eighth to secure the title for Trinity. Box Score

The championship was the second consecutive for Trinity and sixth overall.
