DEPAUW WINS FIRST OUTRIGHT SCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS TITLE

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The sixth-ranked DePauw University Tigers improved to 21-4 and earned their first outright Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title after defeating 18th-ranked Trinity University, 8-1, in the SCAC championship match on Sunday. Trinity dropped to 14-8 with the loss.

After sweeping the three doubles matches, the Indiana Tigers took singles wins at the first, second, third, fifth and sixth flights.

With the victory, DePauw becomes the second straight different conference champion in women’s tennis following 15 consecutive titles (outright or shared) by Trinity. Sewanee-University of the South took home the women’s tennis championship last year with a 5-4 upset of then No. 1-ranked DePauw.

DePauw had seven different players make the 2008 All-Tournament team. Four of those – Janelle Arita, Kelly Buckley, Betsey Flanzer and Kristine Lewry – all went undefeated at their respective singles’ slots to earn all-tourney honors. All three of the Tigers’ doubles teams earned all-tournament recognition.

Mary Katherine Stone of Sewanee and Jamie Dillon of Oglethorpe University are the only repeat honorees on the all-tournament singles team from a year ago.

Lali Satyavada of Southwestern University, who went 2-0 at No. 5 singles and 2-0 at No. 6 singles, is the first player to ever earn all-tournament honors at the same tournament at two different singles positions.

*Any player (or doubles team) that goes through the conference tournament undefeated is named to the all-tournament team automatically, but a player (or doubles team) must compete in at least two matches at the tournament to be considered. If no one player or team goes undefeated using the above criteria, then the next best record at that position will be named to the all-tournament team.
