DePauw’s Stoffregen; Trinity’s Breuer honored as 2004
SCAC Cross Country Coaches-of-the-Year


SUWANEE, Ga.
– In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, DePauw University's Kori Stoffregen was named SCAC Men’s Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year. Stoffregen and Trinity University’s Jenny Breuer split the vote on the women’s side and share SCAC Women’s Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year honors.

For Stoffregen, it is his fifth-consecutive men’s cross country Coach-of-the-Year honor. He was also recognized as the women’s Coach-of-the-Year in 2000 and 2003. For Breuer, it is her first conference Coach-of-the-Year award. Earlier this month, Breuer was named the U.S. Track Coaches Association South Region Coach-of-the-Year

Running in the conference meet held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss., the DePauw men totaled 29 points to win the program’s fifth-consecutive SCAC cross country title. The DU Tigers placed ahead of Centre College with 74, Trinity with 83 and Rhodes College with 110. 

Individually, DePauw senior Graham Wellman won his third consecutive individual title by covering the 8,000 meters in 26:26.28. Trinity's John Herlin was runner-up in the men's competition and finished with a time of 26:35.56.

The DU Tigers also got all-SCAC performances from senior Keith Marshall (26:46.82 – fourth place), senior Matthew Behrensmeyer (27:02.33 - sixth place), junior Ben Stallsworth (27:05.02 – seventh place) and sophomore Chad Bennett (27:16.06 – 11th place).

For the second consecutive year, the DePauw University women swept both the team and individual championships.

The DU Tiger women won with 40 points followed by Trinity with 61, Rhodes with 87 and Centre with 110. The championship by DePauw marked its fourth since joining the league in 1998.

Individually, DePauw senior Natalie Shaffer won her third consecutive individual title by covering the 5,000 meters in 18:31.54 – the third-fastest finish in the history of the SCAC women’s cross country championships. Centre’s Eileen Schilling finished second in 18:44.74.

DePauw also got all-SCAC performances from sophomore Liz Ulrich (19:05.37 – fifth place), junior Lauren Hendrix (19:28.96 – ninth place), and sophomore Emily Mason (19:29.77 – 10th place).

For the first time in league history, the SCAC qualified two men’s and two women’s teams to the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, DePauw finished second at the Great Lakes Regional and Centre finished second at the South Regional to qualify. On the women’s side, DePauw finished second at the Great Lakes Regional and Trinity won the South Regional to qualify. At the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships held at Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Whitetail Golf Course, DePauw’s men finished 13th and the DU women came in 16th, while Centre’s men and Trinity’s women came in 24th in their respective races.
